There had been no sign of Dream for the past few days. And no sign of who had broken him out.
Snowchester was up and running as a safe haven. The walls around the outside were extended to be even taller. The mansion was converted into a safe house. Every room was occupied with someone seeking safety or wanting to help.
Jay, Techno, Phil, Puffy, Eret, and Sapnap took turns standing guard, so there was always someone watching the entrance of the mansion. Techno and Phil took the night shift, sleeping in rounds. Jay was up for the early morning shift. Puffy and Eret took midday. And Sapnap watched in the evening. It was a good system.
Nothing out of the ordinary had happened yet, and everyone hoped it wouldn't. Sam hadn't returned yet from his latest expedition to find Dream, and Niki and Jack had just recently come to the safe house.
It wasn't living, but it was surviving. That was good enough for now.

Jay got up in the early morning to switch with Techno and Phil. She pulled on her armor and slowly crept down the stairs. Both men were awake now, and nodded as she approached them. They headed off towards the rooms to get some sleep before the sun rose in a few hours, and she sat near the door, sword balanced on her lap.
It was never fun to do this, but it was necessary. Luckily the only thing she had run into so far was some creepers.
She watched as a few people began to exit their rooms; Niki, who headed to the kitchen, Ranboo cradling Michael, just walking around, probably to lull the child back to sleep, and Puffy, who brought her a coffee, then headed back to her room.
Jay yawned and took a long drink of her hot coffee, smiling.
She sat there for what felt like forever, but was probably only about an hour at the most. Outside, she heard voices and footsteps. She carefully and quietly peered out the window.
Standing about 200 feet away from the safe house was Dream. Dream, BBH, Antfrost, and George. Behind them was more people that she had never seen before.
Dream had brought an army.
She cursed and pulled the alarm on the wall, setting off red lights and sirens inside each of the rooms. They had tested it and it couldn't be heard from outside.
Slowly, people began to emerge from the rooms. Tommy ushered Tubbo, Ranboo, and Michael into the basement. Techno and Phil looked annoyed that they had been rewoken, but were ready. Eret had potions lining their belt, and a sword ready in hand. Puffy, Niki, and Jack all pulled on armor as they emerged. Purpled and Sapnap exited their rooms battle ready.
"Dream is here! And he brought friends!" Jay yelled to them all. They rushed towards the doors, looking out the window as the group across the lawn stared down at them.
They opened the doors, and all emerged into the cold morning. Dream had his mask on, and both BBH and Antfrosts eyes glowed red. George smiled as his own eyes glowed green, a floating translucent being behind him.
"This is a suicide mission." Purpled muttered.
"We just need enough time for the kids to be far enough away." Jay responded. There was a tunnel system under the mansion that allowed them to escape from the basement, with a hidden door. So Dream wouldn't be able to find them through the tunnel.
Dreams laugh echoed around the still landscape as the group advanced on them.
"I'm not here for any of you. I'll spare your lives if you give me Tommy and Tubbo." Dream yelled from across the lawn.
"Techno and Phil, you're on Dream. Puffy, Niki, and Purpled, you guys take BBH and Antfrost. Jack and Eret, you're on crowd control." Jay yelled out. No way he was getting her brothers that easily.
"What about me?" Sapnap asked.
"Sapnap, you and I are on George."
"Pog." Jay stopped.
"You did not just say pog in the middle of a war."
"What? Who cares if we're all gonna die anyway." Jay laughed.
"Alright, fine, pog." She knocked fists with him as they advanced on George.
The first sword clash came from Techno and Dream.
Soon, it was all out chaos.
Sapnap and Jay carefully coordinated their attacks against George, but it was like he was untouchable. With each attack, he seemed to have a perfectly timed parry. It was almost... unnatural.
After a while of fighting, yelling, the clashing of metal, George yawned and then disappeared. Not teleported, just disappeared. Out of thin air, and didn't come back.
"Well, okay then." Jay muttered, and then she and Sapnap both threw themselves back into the fight.
Sapnap went to help Eret and Jack with the assortment of other soldiers around.
"You're outnumbered!" They heard Dream yell.
"That's what you think, bitch!" A voice said from behind them. Jay turned, standing on the roof of the mansion was Wilbur. The real Wilbur, all dressed up in his tan coat and revolution sash, the flag of L'Manburg laying behind him. Like he had brought it on purpose. "You told me I had to break you out, but you never said I couldn't help take you down." He laughed and threw a bomb, which exploded in the crowd.
"Wilbur!" Jay yelled, smiling.
"Go get 'em, Jay!" He yelled back, climbing down off the tall spot.
Jay jumped in to help Techno and Phil. The two were definitely holding their own, but fighting Dream was difficult. And even then, he seemed to be stronger somehow.
Jay heard the doors open behind her, as the kids walked out. Tubbo, Ranboo, and Tommy all stood in their mismatched armor, holding weapons.
"Go back inside!" Jay yelled, narrowly missing an attack from Dream.
"We're going to help!" Tommy yelled back, jumping into the fight.
As much as she didn't want to admit it, having the three there was tipping the odds in their favor. Between Tommys reckless attacks, to Tubbos defensive state, to Ranboos protective stance, they were gaining the upper hand.
Dream shoved Techno back, hitting him hard through the middle with his axe. The man fell over, holding his bleeding side. Phil rushed over to help him, leaving Jay as the only one fighting Dream.
She readied her stance and took a swing, this was it. The fight of her life.
Dream easily blocked her and swung his own axe, almost catching her side. She barely jumped out of the way before he lunged again.
She could hardly keep up with his speed, not to mention the man wasn't even breaking a sweat.
She heard someone approach behind her and was distracted for just long enough that Dream got a kick into her hip. She stumbled for a moment, and heard the clash of steel. She looked up to see Tommy blocking Dreams axe.
"I told you to go back inside." Jay said, regaining her composure and attacking Dream.
"Yeah, well, I'm not good at listening." Tommy swung with her, hitting Dreams arm. Jay rolled her eyes as Dream backed away for a moment.
Techno stood once more and moved over to stand next to the two. Wilbur was soon there as well, next to Tommy.
Dream looked between the four Maddox kids, and smirked. Jay heard rustling behind her, and turned to see Tubbo and Ranboo there as well.
"If you fight one of us, you fight all of us." Techno said.
"Your loss." Dream raised his axe.
They jumped right back into battle. BBH and Antfrost ran over to help Dream, occupying Tubbo, Ranboo, and Wilbur. Dream targeted Techno first, and got a few solid hits, enough to slow him down at least a little.
Jay felt herself tire as Dream continued with his constant blows. She watched as he moved towards Tommy, taking a moment he was distracted by Wilburs yelling to try to get him. She shouted and jumped in front of the axe, taking the full blow of the sharp point. She felt the end slice through her stomach, hitting her spine with a sickening crunch. She fell with a thud to the ground, blood pouring out of her side.
"Shit, shit, no, no, no." Tommy muttered out, falling with her and catching her.
"Tommy, no, I'm fine, get up." She pushed him away, pushing herself up to her feet. Eret threw a potion to her, the effect splashing up onto her.
She wasn't okay, but she wasn't going to die.
She grasped her sword and swung at Dream, only to catch yet another blow to the shoulder. She groaned.
"Just go down. You first, then the rest." Dream growled, face close to hers.
She smiled at him.
"You are coming down with me." She muttered, spitting blood in his face. She plunged her sword deep into his chest, stopping the green man where he stood.
He spluttered for a moment, then fell to the ground, dead.
She laughed and stumbled, the rest of Dreams team retreating now that he was dead.
"Jay!" She heard from around her. Her head was spinning.
"Hey. Hey, Tommy." She said quietly. He fell to the ground where she was laying. She reached a hand up to his face. "You're safe now." She watched Wilbur and Techno moved behind her little brother.
"Yeah, you did it." He whispered. "You did it and now we're all safe. And you're gonna be okay."
"No. No, I'm not." She shook her head. "It's alright. You're okay." She smiled. It was okay like this. "You'll be safe. Stay with Ranboo and Tubbo, and look after Michael, okay?"
"I-I don't know why you're saying this. Because you're gonna be okay." Tommy rambled.
"Just promise me."
"I promise."
"Thank you, little bee."
Jay shut her eyes for the final time.
