Once the sun completely set, the vampire glided to his feet from his upside down position in the corner.

The nauseating sensation tripped the vampire into an ongoing, torturous spiral of absolute tragedy. Its repulsive origin derived from the cursed blood his body refuted, yet meant to absorb for the leftover organ systems in his body to run. The blood was rumbling through his abdomen as his body rejected the human fluid and forced the vampire to belch.

Automatically, his mouth widened and the human blood sprayed onto the female body he drained yesterday night. The woman's pale skin was coated by the red plasma that once resided within her veins, pumping through the body to give her scrawny figure life.

Her blood was not alone.

The vampire vomited the blood of the men, whose lives were taken during the execution. The tang was deliciously sickening for the vampire as the body fluid became a taboo substance to drink, but pleasing to ingest temporarily. The basic smell was between the woman and the two men.

The nostrils on his narrow freckled nose flared.

Then, there was her.

The vampire reminisced the blood he consumed from the injured woman. The delectable, sweet, and sugary flavor was, despite how little he tasted, different. Compared to the human blood he attempted to hold in his abdomen many times, the woman's gore shared a subtle explosion onto his abnormal taste buds. The others were not nearly as desirable.

He sensed her odor the time she waltzed into the room with the brown, torn bag on her back and opened the windows in the room to let the sun in. It was evident the girl was a resilient scavenger like the other humans; the black dirt coated over her brown skin, her scars distributed randomly under her ragged clothing and reflexes showing she experienced challenges amongst his people and her own.

The perception he had of the girl deepened in the midst of the first encounter. The scent drove him into the animalistic nature he was sworn to be, but did not become. He was close to sinking his sharp teeth into female's musky skin, until the vampire found himself intruding her mind and drinking her thoughts clearly; the rarest moments he induced in one night.

He read the mind of a regular. The standard capability of telepathy was embedded in a network of those like him; before last night, he believed his ability could only stretch so far to his similar counterparts.

It was the first time in 10 years the vampire discovered he could penetrate a human's thoughts.

His eye twitched.

Another first was saving the regular.

He let out a stuttered breath, thinking about tasting her blood.

The thought made him hungrier.

He could have drained her.

However, he cannot hold human blood.

He could have let the food perish and die.

But he did not.

The vampire walked to the window, pushed the glass shield up and crawled out; the invisible setules, tiny dense hairs found commonly on spiders, pricked out of his palms and feet as he crawled on to the wall of the building. Using the strength in his legs, the vampire pounced off the wall, turning in a roll in the air and landed on top of a rusting car's hood. The metal sunk under his feet.

He stared into the darkness as he traveled through Manhattan's streets to the main building. Other creatures followed the same path as they carried the bounty of live, screaming humans to their hive.

They stayed away from him.

His eyes shifted around, watching the other vampires whine away in fright.

There was a small one, staring at him on top of a vehicle. The child vampire crouched down; her knees spread and hands shot down in front. A large rat hung from her mouth, embedded by the multiple sharp fangs. Those white eyes were unmoving and unchanged.

Her shoulders propped up as the child vampire slightly inched further. Her body wanted to hunt because his appearance was similar to a human. Then again, there was his odor that reeked of death.

Her nostrils flared one last time before retreating to carry her hunt to the hive as the others.

On the other hand, he was not withdrawing.

His immediate primal instinct propelled him to surge forward. The child vampire tightened her mouth around the rat as she slipped through his hold to under the truck.  The whiff of her stench was a taste of the true fluid he can only consume. He bent down and grabbed her ankle. She let out a muffled screech, dragging her thick sharp nails into the concrete and broke the ground.

He threw the vampire child backwards onto her back, keeping the grip on her ankle, so she wouldn't escape. She held onto the rat thrashing her head side to side, forming indentations into the ground. In one swift motion, he wounded his fingers around its neck and turned its head to the side to expose the pulsing vein.

He gulped, hungrily.

His fangs stretched out of his gums and the blue iris altered. He bent down, anticipating the blood that would likely smooth down his throat into his emptied stomach.

Suddenly, the rat fell from the child vampire's mouth and it let out a toe curling scream.

He jolted in surprise.

The shriek was an inhuman sound compared to a normal youngling. It was ear piercingly high, croaky yell like a hatchling crying for food from a mother bird. It was strange, yes. Though, the way he held her to the ground, the fright in the child's vampire's white eyes and the fact it was calling out, flashed little scenes in the mind he was left with.

Short images of a children screaming...

...people in white

... people in masks

...wheels

...plastic walls

...muffled voices

The short scenes pushed him off his potential meal as they summoned apprehensive, uneasy feelings.

His meal scattered off after grabbing the rat meat.

His breaths were harsh and deep, unable to comprehend the images with his common nature to hunt.

Nauseously, the vampire groaned from four days without consuming the true nutrition for his unique nature. Also, along side the distorted images, he heard the repeating phrase slither through the connecting minds of the vampires around him.

Ssss...no...ssss...no...ssss...no...ssss...no

He looked up, defensively.

They wouldn't attack him. Through the silent whispers, he recognized there was an animalistic foundation wanting nothing more than blood. Their spoiled brains focused on hunger, blood and consumption as a means of living. The response was a temporary reaction. They can sense he was the same as them, but confused by the difference.

They all proceeded without a thought about his doings, while he held back in his ravenous state.

He dizzily held on to the car's roof until he noticed two others strayed from the path.

They were on all fours and speeding down the street.

He let his first kill go.

He couldn't allow it to happen again.

He tracked the two to one of the tallest buildings.

The two of them were recognizable.

They stopped by the side of the building. The male began to creep up the building as the female circled around the tiled square with her nose spread against the concrete. It appeared the male found something as he held a cloth between his teeth, while jumping to the ground.

The female, automatically, attached to her nose to the fabric and slid her tongue against it. The male did the same. Their tongues lifted and tugged on the fabric, preventing it from falling.

He tilted his head.

From a far, the odor came to him in a rush.

It was the sweetest thing.

He sniffed more.

Rosy.

The odor began to accumulate with his memory.

Mouthwatering.

His fangs bared down from his gums.

Familiar.

In his inhuman pace, he charged and with each of his hands threw the two on either far side of the street. The fabric floated in the air as he caught it in one swipe and smelled it.

There was blood on it.

As much as he'd like to shove it in his mouth and suck the slightest taste, the saliva from the others disgusted him.

He recognized the smell because he remembered the taste.

It was the girl from earlier.

The two vampires hunched over in a defensive stance on his left and right side with their eyes on the fabric.

Hissing at them, they whimpered back.

He took in the scent once more as he observed them.

He completed a one over on them both, finally recalling their faces.

Yesterday, they were waiting outside the store for the girl.

He tilted his head in wonder.

He looked at the vampires.

There was a resemblance with the female.

Lowering to his knees, the vampire held out the cloth towards the female vampire. The male started to approach at the same pace as the female companion. Quickly, he seeped into the male's cognizance and held his movement where they stood; feet away.

The control was short lived because he was weak.

Instead, he threw the bloody cloth to distract him.

The male caught it and no longer paid attention him.

The other vampire tried to go around him to join the partner, but he prevented it. He wounded his hand around the back of her neck, prying her back towards his direction. She fell backwards, croaking and foaming on the mouth. Wildly, she tried to escape as her eyes were fixed on the same bloody material. It was more so her attempting to escape to obsess over the cloth than run from the dangers of him.

His knee pressed against its abdomen, holding her down.

Her legs wailed in the air.

Without a second wasted, he slapped her face to the side and dove into her neck. The female struggled, still fighting to get the bloody material. It was if the vampire's drinking was nothing close to a distraction. She didn't care about his action. She just wanted to join the companion.

The taste was metallic, hot and pungent. On the other hand, with every large gulp, his hunger was settling into satisfaction. He firmed the hold by her nape to keep her still, while he sucked the blackened blood into his body. In receiving the blood, he got lost into the telepathic network shared between them.

Electrified images of the girl splashed around its head. Except the girl was younger and cleaner. She was surrounded by water with her arm around a water creature. Despite not having it now, she had dark tight coils sprawled out to the side and stretched down to her armpit. The girl's skin was brown, eyes dark brown with subtle hints of emerald, face round, cheekbones high and lightly sharp.

She looked like the perfect fare.

He drank from the vampire's neck harder.

She was different from what he last saw. Her hair was cut low. Body thinner. Face thinner. Both parts were patterned in different scars. One fresh wound under the chin. Another fresh injury on the tip of her turn up nose.  A long light scar from the left side of her forehead, cutting through the eyebrow, ignoring the eyes and straight down to the end of her neck. The others were scattered along her bodily skin; short, long, wide or barely in sight.

Also, their lips were different. In the vampire's mind, the corners of her mouth turned up and teeth shining brightly. Modern day her mouth was downturned and...talkative.

He chuckled, removing his teeth from the weak vampire's neck.

Its arms and legs flopped, insipidly.

Sighing, he felt stronger and more alive.

The male was still sniffing around the area, while holding the bloody cloth.

He wondered why was a piece of her bloody material positioned precisely on this building.

Did she not heal from his blood? He witnessed it.

Did she encounter other threats? He doubted others' attacked because more blood would be around.

Yet, he sensed it in another direction...another direction ....and another direction. As he paid close attention, her blood was around the city.

His lips twisted.

It was confusing.

But he saw through the illusion. She avoided the chase by using their weakness. Knowing their nature, these two were going to stay in one area and smell it for hours till they move on.

The miniature odors were incomparable to the full figure. He could smell the girl's odor from the miles she traveled from and to till his senses paused in one location.

There was part of him that wanted to hunt more. The remainder was curious about the girl whose blood sweetened his senses, the girl who exposed him to sun, nearly killed him and the girl he gave his blood to.

Then once more he was numb and hungry again.
