Obie was sitting by the window's ledge.

Everything was so simple before.

She recalled playing by the window plenty of times, while her father and uncle George re-watched the old Star War movies. Her version of playing was strange to most kids she met. Most kids were barely any kids, because she hardly had any friends.

While kids played with dolls or play doe, Obie liked to stare out of a window. People misunderstood her habit as a sign of delay and recommended her parents to get her checked. Her psychiatrist mother argued endlessly against their ignorance and explained imaginative play extended outside of physically playing with things. No one but her mom understood how Obie could replace reality with a snap of her fingers to enter a whole new world. Taking her mind to lengths an adult couldn't grasp; expanding the world in a new light and bending existence a way no other child could. Then, returning to real life and accepting it for its faults. Obie could imagine a world she wanted and still loved the world she was in.

She couldn't do it now.

As she looked out the window, this destruction was an example of the crazy worlds she liked to make up. And the reality Obie had come to love was gone.

Everything switched.

What's the point of imagining anything anymore.

She doubted even children dreamed nowadays.

She doubted they even slept.

Or got the chance to.

"Are you ready?" Obie said, sensing the vampire's presence on the staircase.

She didn't have to turn around to know the vampire nodded.

"The sun's coming up. Close the curtains. I got this one."

Before Obie could stand up, the rising light from the windows was shut out and the vampire was standing a couple feet from her.

"Hmm." Hesitantly, Obie closed the curtains together. As soon as she's done, he sped to Obie's side. "Does your skin feel heat?"

The vampire didn't answer, trying to comprehend her question.

They had these troubles last night.

Obie and the vampire...well Obie had been trying to develop some ideas to block the light. They weren't looking for something invincible, because it was too advanced for Obie to find.

Obie hoped to put the vampire in an outwear that will give him something less than a sunburn.

The entire time the vampire was patiently waiting and staring at Obie so hard she thought she could feel him on her skin. Feeling marginally like this was a testing, Obie made sure he permitted her plans.

She sighed. "I know I keep asking you stuff but sometimes I think you go in and out. You know stuff then you don't. It's been progressing, but reinforcement is key."

He shook his head.

Obie hoped she didn't regret this. "Close your hands in prayer position like this...Good...close them all the way."

He looked at his hands in bewilderment.

"I'm going to touch you."

"The rule?" The corner of his lips twitched.

"Yeah yeah. This counts as an emergency," she cuffed each corner of her mouth with her closed fingers.

Obie, then, hovered her mouth over his fingertips and exhaled.

"Did you feel the heat?" She asked, breathing again.

The vampire was non-responsive.

Obie took the silence as insistence to resume blowing her breath. "How about now?"

He wasn't responding.

"One more time..."

Obie let out a "Haaa..."

Nothing.

"I don't think-" Obie finally looked up.

The vampire was gazing upon her face intensely. Those blue eyes pierced through Obie's own, somehow constricting her muscles to stand still. In turn, it held Obie in place and forced her to recognize the white specks in his blue orbs. They intercepted the overall background of the cool hue. Overlapping the white specks were hints of vibrant colors that were threatening to expand and conquer the blue iris space. Purple for one eye. Green for the other. Each white, purple and green line expanded from the silvery grey pupil.

Obie's breath caught.

For an instant, she assumed his influence was a result of actual superhuman skill. But Obie thought too far to avoid the source of her astonishment.

"Your pupils. It's so similar..." she gulped.

Obie's eyes were brown. The hints of green almost tricked others to believe her eyes were hazel. Until, they zoomed into her pupils and focused on the duo chrome shift from silver to black or black to silver. Her father claimed she had a vision dysfunction as a child, resulting in the special color shift. Eventually. the problem was fixed with expensive treatment and her silver black pupils remained.

She bit her lip.

No.

They weren't fully identical.

His eyes were blue.

Her eyes were brown.

His pupils were approximately downright silver.

Hers weren't; just a shift.

Obie brought her hands down to her side, stepping towards the curtains and putting space in the midst of them.

A funny feeling swirled in her stomach.

Obie looked away. "I don't think you can feel heat. Meaning, you're unaffected by weather. I don't know if it's the same for cold, but I can bet it is."

"Cold...."

"Yes like snow."

"Cold snow."

Obie's attention was drawn to his eyes. "You'll see what that is in a month or two. It's the white flakes that fall out of the sky. I think it happened a couple days ago actually, but it was more like ice cubes."

"What is this i-i-imporant?"

"'Why is this important?' You mean." Obie responded. "Because this means we can throw layers of clothes on you and it won't affect your body. You could wear tons of clothes without passing out. I think you're only severely affected by sunlight. We can try to find a heater around here to back up on what I'm saying. But we don't have time. Let's just see how this goes."

The vampire nodded. "Protection."

"Ready to start?"

"Explain." He said hurriedly.

Obie wondered was it anxiousness or his need to learn. "I don't know much about vampires' sensitivity to sunlight. It's sort of the reason you guys got the name in the first place. There are some things I do know. 1. Sunscreen. 2. Fabric. 3. Color. These things affect human's protection from the sun."

"Me?"

"We're going to figure it out. I set up a strategy. The best clothing fabrics to block sunlight is nylon or polyester. Even wool. I couldn't find wool, but my uncle has the other types. So I chose six different colors in each fabric; black, green, red, yellow, blue and white. I wrapped the colors on your arm in that order with the sunscreen beneath both. Right arm has the nylon. Left arm has the polyester. Therefore, we'll find out what's the best color and fabric to protect your skin. It's child play. I know. I'm not a wizard, but I figured this is the best." The plus was she didn't have to see that ugly ass plaid shirt every day. "Makes sense?"

"No."

"I don't blame you." Obie said. "Stick your arm out. I'm going to pull the curtains. It's gonna hurt you like we talked about, but it's gonna be quick."

He stretched his hands, face determined. "Yes."

"In 5, 4, 3, 2-"

She whipped the sunlight out.

His arms erupted in flames, puzzling Obie to which fabric or color worked; as expected.

The vampire screamed, painfully.

Obie shut the curtains and yelled, "Dip your arms in the buckets!"

With a chilling roar, the vampire shoved his arms through the buckets of sand in front of him.

Obie fell to her knees, smelling the catastrophe of his burnt flesh. "Don't shove your hands to the end! The fire will burn through the bucket! Listen to me!"

The vampire was screaming in agony with his entire body vibrating violently.

"Stir your arms slowly in the sand!"

The vampire was ignoring her and proceeded to freak out. He was close to breaking the metal buckets with his violent jerks.

"You have to listen to me!"

He ignored her.

The rim of the metal bucket was beginning to melt.

"I said fucking stir it!" Obie grabbed his intact upper arms, catching the vampire off guard. "Stir! It!"

Obie began to move his tensed arms for him.

He was releasing his control of his upper limbs and permitted Obie to be his puppet master as he yelled through the pain.

"That's it. Nice and slow." Her smooth voice calmed him.

The fire must have been decreasing.

His abnormal shrieks slowly turned into heaves, then turned into whimpers.

Obie ordered him. "Let me see before you regenerate."

The vampire moaned as he pulled it out.

Fuck.

Each fabric was burnt to crisp, exposing his damaged skin.

Obie expected the particular result.

Triggering fire on one specific cloth would set fire to the rest, no matter if they worked or not. Sort of like wildfire. On the other hand, if they looked quick enough, they can find which fabric and color protected his skin the most. After, they eliminate the others and focus on the winner.

The proof was now in the bruises.

Immediately, Obie could spot which fabric was better. He had less damage on his left polyester arm than right nylon arm. She switched her attention to his left arm. For the most part, his arm was intact. The white fabric totally burned and shaved off a layer of his skin.

She had to be quick.

He was healing.

The red polyester spot also had some damage underneath.

Then, there was the-

Obie smiled to herself proudly. "I think we found your color. Well, colors."

Thirty minutes later, the vampire was wearing a matching set of densely dark denim jeans and a dark blue polyester sweater. To be safe, Obie told him to put on some black nylon tights and a long sleeve shirt underneath his polyester. It would have been better if uncle George had black polyester. But he didn't have it.

"Black usually makes people hot, but you don't necessarily get hot unless your skin is directly in contact to sunlight." Obie assured as he stared at himself in the mirror. "We'll have to find you a mask for your face. Good thing you're staying in the car the entire time till sundown or you'll be toast. Deja vu. For now, always have your hood on and face downwards."

"Hate pants." He finally said.

"Sucks but you're wearing it." Obie said. "I'm going to take the curtains to cover you in the backseat. Those clothes aren't invincible, but a light bruise is nothing compared to being burned alive. Your skin would most likely regenerate, basically feeling nothing."

The vampire crouched like a monkey and began crawling on the ground. The hem of his pants rose to expose his tights underneath.

"If you tear your pants, you're not coming." He was trying to see how flexible he was in his jeans. "I'm going to tape up the backseat windows. I figure it'll be easier for you."

The vampire jumped from the ground to ten foot in the air on the ceiling like a spider and back to land.

"I'm glad I left Burrito upstairs." She looked at him uncannily before turning towards the garage door. "I'll tell you when it's done, mister vampire. It was a successful experiment day. But like I said, don't tear those-"

As Obie tried to finish her sentence, a glass shattered.

The vampire's widened knees jointed, falling forward and ultimately sitting on his ankles. His body slouched forward; the hump on his back was a perfect half circle in shape.

"Vampire?" Absentmindedly, Obie fingered her tight curls.

The minute of time felt like an hour.

"Did you fall?"

The mirror showed webs of cracks in the middle.

"Experiment..." She heard him say.

"Yeah that's what I said."

He smashed his head against the mirror. "Experiment..."

Obie jumped. "Wait what."

He smashed his head against the mirror again. The glass shattered into minuscule sprinkles over his large body. "Experiment..."

Obie stepped forward. "Are you okay-"

He smashed his head through the wall. "Experiment..."

"Stop!"

The wall shook as he smashed his head again.

Deficient in reasonable thinking, Obie walked to the vampire and tried to wave her hand in front of his face.

Out of nowhere, a force field exploded from his body, throwing Obie to the farthest side of the room. Her body sank into the wall, covering Obie in filth and debris.

"Ah!" Obie coughed, trying to stand up.

Her back cracked in pain.

Instinctively, Obie crawled backwards into the wall, thinking the vampire was going to harm her again. She underestimated the levels to his abilities, discovering it was beyond physical. She should have never sought him out. He was going to kill her after all. He needed a way into the day world to kill people and she gave him the key. Yes, that's it.

How stupid she was.

Obie contemplated over and over again of her mistakes. Yet, as the dust cleared out of her eyes, she realized the vampire was still across the room. He was pushing his head through the wall as the dust clouds began to horde the dining area and hovered over the vampire like ghastly wings.

Under his breath, he forcefully said "Experiment..."

As Obie felt her bones crack into place, she ignored the profound healing and peered at the vampire with the most puzzled look.

What did she get herself into?
