I drove for nearly eleven hours straight, awake on coffees and energy drinks as well as whatever snacks I could get at the gas stations.
I was beyond exhausted and needed to take a shower. So I did what I never thought I would do......I called my grandmother.
It took some time for me to gather up enough courage to call her but, I did, and to say I was nervous was an understatement.
The phone rang a couple of times until I finally heard her pick up and clear her throat a little to warm it up.
Great! I woke her up!
"H-hello?" She answers groggily.
I take in a deep breath and then let it out before I reply.
"Hi Nana." I replied.
There was a brief moment of silence and then I heard her sniffle along with some movement.
"Annie? My darling Annie?! Is it really you?" She asks sounding more awake now.
"Yeah. It's really me. I'm sorry to have called you so late. I didn't mean to wake you. I can call back a little later?" I suggest.
"God no. My darling little Angel. Like I always said, I will get plenty of sleep when I am six feet under." She tells me.
We both share a little laugh at the comment.
My god, I miss her.
"Nana, I'm sorry to have bothered you at all but...." I stop myself and begin to cry silently to myself then wipe the tears from my eyes and continue.
"But what sweetie?" She asks.
"Can I come and stay with you for a little while?" I tell her while hiding how upset I am.
"Of course! You know this has always been your home. Are you alright though?" She asks.
I want to tell her so bad what has happened and what all is going on but she can't. I don't want her to worry.
"I'm fine. I'm just tired is all. I've been on the road a long time and am a really a couple of hours away from you." I tell her.
"Well please, there's plenty of room here." She replies all happy and excited.
"Thank you. I'll see you soon." I replied with a big smile and some relief.
"Of course!" She replies. "Drive safe."
"I will." I tell her.
"I love you." She tells me.
"I love you too." I smiled.
I sit there in my car for a little while longer before I begin to get out at the diner I have been sitting in it's parking lot talking to my grandmother. I use the restroom, get some food to take with me and then head out in the road again.
Throughout the entire car ride practically, all I could think about was that sooner or later, she would find out the truth in what is really going on.
I will tell her but when the time is right. Right now, all I care about is sleeping in a nice and comfortable bed and seeing her again.
*************************
The hours seemed to have gone by slower than I thought it would but I finally made it, just before the sun was about to come up.
The moment I pulled up to the house, I turned off the engine and just looked at it. Suddenly a flood of memories overwhelmed me and began making my nerves act up a bit.
I knew she was up still because of the little bit of lamp light in the window in the tv room.
I tried to fight back the tears I could feel were falling down my face and realized that this was it.
I took in a few deep breaths and let them out to calm my nerves more and then got out, grabbed my bag from my trunk and purse before slowly making my way up the rickety porch steps that creaked so loudly with ever step.
Before I reached the door, I heard someone unlocking it from inside and then seconds later, she had opened it.
There she was. My Nana. The one who had always taken care of me and yet, who I have let down in more ways then I care to admit.
Neither one of us could move and all we could do was smile while allowing tears to fall down then embraced each other in a hug tightly.
I sure did miss her.
Next chapter will be posted soon! :)
