"Lincoln High! Lincoln High!" Cheers and chants boom throughout the brightly lit stadium as the players jog out one-by-one in their white and navy uniforms. Cheerleaders with high ponytails and short skirts fly in the air as people of all ages scream in the stands.

Uncomfortably, I bring my soda to my lips and take a small sip only for the can to be knocked to the floor by the arm of a girl whose face is painted half navy and half white.

"Oops." She giggles and pushes through while her friend shrieks with laughter behind her.

It's my first football game ever despite our high school's team being one of the best in the nation. My cousin convinced me that the game would be "so much fun." I've now realized that she only said that to get a ride and then ditch me as soon as we arrived.

"Goooo Jaguars!"

The whole school is here- hell, the whole county's here for Lincoln High's first game of the season. It's sweaty, crowded, and utter chaos. Simply put, I don't belong here. Nothing against school spirit but I'm the kind of girl who spends Friday nights studying for next month's exams.

"#81 Logan Trent, #68 Harris Lee, #23 Zack Darrington..." The crows roars so powerfully I nearly pass out on the spot. Normally, I would just leave but...

"#1 Jaden Brown!" The crowd's cheers escalate as the star quarterback jogs out, the last of the platers to enter the field. A tiny smile appears on my lips and my eyes stay glued on him as the players line up in their positions. Chants overpower Jaden Brown's words at first but the entire stadium falls silent to put their hands over their hearts as speakers announce the national anthem.

The team lines up with confidence, the stadium so silent you could hear a pin drop. Jaden Brown calls the play and the game begins.

I admit. I do get kind of hyped up and maybe I start screaming and chanting along but it's impossible not to in this environment when the Lincoln High Jaguars are scoring touchdown after touchdown.

As soon as the game's over, I try my best to rush down even just to wave at Jaden Brown but I'm an admittedly weak 5'2" girl with no muscle trying to push through a crowd of hundreds. I manage to catch a glimpse of him just as head cheerleader, Lola Greene, runs over to give him a kiss. He spins her around and they walk off the field with their arms wrapped around each other.

Guys like Jaden Brown don't date girls like me. They don't even talk to girls like me and vice-versa. It's nothing to be sad about. I don't even like guys like that: the type that act like they own the world and sleep with a different girl a week. Because they're a Lincoln High football player, they get free meals, excuses for detentions, and girls lining up to sleep with them so that they can brag that #81 took their virginity. The worst part is that they know how powerful they are.

But Jaden Brown is different. He should be the worst as captain and quarterback but he's not. He always attends class, gets good grades, and everyone knows that Jaden Brown is going to marry Lola Greene.

I admire him. He sits next to me in AP Statistics and is always super sweet to everyone. He even invited me to tonight's game, which I politely declined at the time but here I am.

I don't need to go to football games to know the outcome. My dad is the coach and whenever he's at home, it's all about football. Going to the games is like overkill. Luckily, it's junior year and in a couple years, I'll be out of a place where football matters more than anything else.

"Amelia! Amelia!" I hear.

Oh no.

My cousin, Joie, continues to call after me as if she didn't totally use me just a few hours ago to get a ride to the game.

"Amelia! Wait up, I need a ride back!"

Gritting my teeth, I turn around to face her. I don't know what else to say so I put it bluntly. "You ditched me."

She kind of grimaces then shrugs.

"My bad. Eek. I figured you'd find someone else." I raise an eyebrow and she pouts. "Come on; don't be so clingy. There wasn't any more space where I was sitting and I had the BEST view of Zack Darrington. He's SUCH a stud. I just couldn't give that up. You understand, right?"

No, I don't understand. At the very least, she could pretend to apologize.

"Sooo you're still giving me a ride back, right? 'Cuz there's an after-party that you and I should SO totally-"

"You can go back with my dad," I cut in. "I just can't give up the BEST view I have of my TV at home. You understand, right?"

Before she can say anything else, I rush off in search of my car.
