Chapter Twenty-one

I pulled back shocked. “Sage-“ He started but was cut off by a static sounding voice.

“We apologize for the inconvenience but we’re having technical difficulties and we’ll have to momentarily stop the ride. But we’ll fix it as soon as possible.”

“What?” I yelled. “No! I have to get off this ride. Hello?” I screamed leaning dangerously off the side of the cart. “Hello? I need off this ride!”

“Sage!...Sage calm down.” Nate said trying to drag me away from the edge.

“No, no I can’t.” I said pushing him away. “I can’t deal with this right now. Why would you tell me this?” I said as I moved to the other side of the car and away from him.

“I couldn’t keep it to myself any longer.”

“I’m dating Aaron.”

“I know and I know how selfish this was of me but I couldn’t keep it a secret anymore. I thought you deserved to know.”

“No I didn’t need to know anything about this!”

“Sage…” He said leaning closer.

“No!” I shoved him away panicking. “I need to get off right now!” I screamed over the edge again.

“Sage?” I heard Aaron yell up to me.  I leaned over the side of the car to look down at him and Kalina. “Are you ok?”

“I hate heights.” I yelled back.

“Why are you on this ride then? Are you loco?” Kalina asked looking at me like I was the dumbest person in the world.

“Apparently!” I said throwing my hands up in the air.

“Sage can you just calm down?” Nate said sighing.

“No I can’t calm down because you just ruined everything!” I shouted raking a hand through my hair. He scrunched his eyebrows at me as what I said confused him. “You’re my best friend, Nate…And I’m with Aaron. I don’t want that to change.”

“It doesn’t have to change, Sage.” He said as the ride lurched and it started moving again.

“Yes it does. You changed it by letting your feelings be known.”

“You can’t tell me that you didn’t already know!”

“Somewhere I’m sure I did know but I was ignoring it and pretending like it was all in my head.”

“Well it’s not all in your head!” He yelled as Aaron and Kalina were getting off the ride. “You can’t tell me that kiss meant nothing to you.”

I flashed back to the night with Nate when Aaron and I weren’t talking. Maybe there had been something that I’d over looked. But I wasn’t going to dwell on that now.

I shook my head. “I was sad and alone and I was trying to forget him.”

“But you didn’t, obviously.”

“No. I didn’t.” I said as the ride moved again.

“You won’t even give me a chance will you?” He asked as they opened the door.

“I-“ I said before thinking twice about saying anything and bolting out of the ride.

“Sage?” Aaron said as I sprinted past him.

“Where are you going?” Kalina shouted clearly confused.

I could hear running footsteps and I turned briefly to see not only Aaron and Kalina, but Nate was among them as well.

I could hear them shouting at me but I kept running refusing to stop and face my problems.

I dashed into a fun house causing several angry shouts as I cut in line.

I ran down a hall that had metal poles connected from the floor to the ceiling. I weaved past them before skidding around a corner and into a room with mirrors. I was trying to run through the whole thing but I kept running into mirrors. I was becoming frustrated when I finally broke out of the hall of mirrors and into a different room. I breathed a sigh of relief as I jogged into a room that was dark except for bright strobe lights. In the middle of the room there was a catwalk with a clown pendulum swinging back and forth in the middle. Obviously the point was to wait until the pendulum was on one side and then quickly pass by it. It was at chest length and it wasn’t very fast but it made me cautious. I was almost past it when I heard someone shout my name.

I paused and looked back before realizing my mistake.

I glanced back as I heard the ‘whoosh’ of air. The pendulum hit me square in the shoulder. It wasn’t hard, in fact it felt like foam but the surprise of it all knocked me backwards against the waist high guard rail. I tried to grab a hold of the bar but I was already flipping over the side. I shrieked as I plummeted down about ten feet before hitting the cold metal floor. My head hit it harder then I would’ve expected and it made my vision blur.

I rolled onto my back and saw a figure run across the catwalk in the strobe light. I heard people calling my name in frantic tones but I couldn’t reply as my read rolled to the side and blackness filled my vision.

“Sage?” I heard someone say. I looked around hastily taking in the scene around me. I was in my house. My room specifically.

“What?” I asked confused as my door opened. I swear I was just somewhere else.

“Hey how are you feeling?” Nate said walking in the door.

“Um, ok…what are you doing here?” I asked sitting up on my bed.

“I’m just making sure you’re feeling ok with the baby and all.” He said walking closer and setting a hand on my stomach.

I looked down with a look of horror on my face. “What?” I asked taking in my stomach which was four times its normal size.

“Why are you acting like this?” Nate asked as I jumped from the bed and looked in my full body mirror.

“I just don’t remember anything.” I said putting a hand on my head.

He walked up to me slowly as if I would run at any moment. “The baby’s due any day now.”

“And the baby’s yours?” I asked turning back to look at him directly.

He shook his head looking even more concerned. “No…she’s Aarons.”

“She?” I asked looking down and putting my hand on my stomach.

“Ya it’s a girl…are you sure you don’t remember any of this?”

I shook my head. “Where’s Aaron?”

He stepped even closer and looked more concerned, if that were even possible. “He left once you found out that you were expecting.”

“No. He wouldn’t do that.” I said shaking my head in disbelief.

“Sage…He left you.”

I stumbled backwards and could feel myself falling as my eyes closed.

Somewhere in my mind I knew I was falling on my back but I felt something hard hit my forehead.

“Sage….he left you.”

I felt my head crack against metal.

“He left you.”

I could hear myself shrieking and people calling my name.

“He. Left. You.”

Someone was shaking my shoulders and saying my name over and over.

“Sage? Are you ok?” Aaron nearly shouted at me in hysterics. “What happened?”

“Nate.” I said putting my hand to my head.

“That’s who you’re running from?” He asked as we both looked at my hand as it came away with blood.

I said something else but it all came out mumbled and inaudible.

“I’m taking you home.” He said before scooping me up into his arms, bridal style.

I saw parts of the fun house go bye as I opened and closed my eyes.

I saw more clowns which kinda freaked me out. I saw more mirrors and moving walls and extreme lights and paint splattered surfaces before finally all I could see was stars.

I breathed in the fresh night air as I heard Kalina’s voice. “Is she ok? What happened?”

“She fell and hit her head. I’m taking her home.” Aaron said with a tone that said there was no room for arguing.

“Hey!” I heard the familiar voice of Nate join us. “Is she ok? Where did you find her?”

“I think you should leave.” Aaron said through gritted teeth.

“Wh-“ Nate started but was cut off by Aaron.

“No, you’ve done enough. You need to stay away from her.” He said before walking briskly out of the carnival.

*****************

“What?” I murmured as Aaron set me down on my bed.

“Your head’s ok.” He said brushing my hair back and away from my face. “It’s just a scratch but I put a band aid on it and you might want to check for a concussion tomorrow.”

He started to leave but I grabbed his hand. “Wait…don’t leave.”

He sat down beside me and put his arm around me as I cuddled closer to him.

“Do you feel any better?” He asked as his hand rubbed up and down my arm.

“Ya…that just made me see everything much more clear than I did before.”

“Why were you running from Nate?” He asked pulling away to look me in the eyes. I looked down at the blanket as I fisted it in my hands. “Did he do something to you?” He asked his voice full of concern.

“He just told me something that I didn’t want to hear.” I said before leaning in and kissing him.

He pulled me onto his lap as I wrapped my arms around his neck. His hands went to my waist as we continued kissing.

I knew I had to tell him someday, he needed to know just how innocent I really was.

I figured now was a good time because if he acted weirdly about it I could blame it on my head injury.

“Aaron.” I said pulling back and leaning my forehead against his.

“Hm?” He asked lightly kissing my lips again.

“I have to tell you something.”

“What is it?” He asked pulling farther away from me as his eyes opened to look at me. He may have pulled away but his hands were still on my waist.

I sighed deciding I might as well tell him now. “I’m…a virgin.” I finally blurted out.

“A…what?” He asked squinting at me.

“I was going to tell you-“ He cut me off as he slid me off him and back onto my bed.

“I just…I didn’t know.” He said raking a hand through his hair before shaking his head.

“I didn’t think it’d be that big of a deal.” I mumbled.

“Well it is Sage…it is.” He whispered the last part before heading for the door. “I have to go.”

“Aaron!” I called after him before he slammed the door behind him.

I sat in my room surrounded with complete silence as I looked at the door with pure shock.

I felt a single tear slide down my cheek as I heard my front door slam shut as well. I knew he’d be surprised but I didn’t think his reaction would be that intense.

I laid back and gazed at the ceiling hoping against everything that had happened that he would text me or call me or rush back in and apologize for overreacting.

As I slowly let my eyes close somewhere in my mind I was thinking that Nate wouldn’t have walked out on me like that.
