Chapter thirty-four

“Hey Beautiful!” Zane yelled while jumping on my bed yet again. “Get up!”

“Zane…” I mumbled into my pillow. “If my clock says that it is any earlier than seven you should run.”

“Good thing I’m not scared of you.” He said laughing.

I looked up at my clock to see that it was six. I groaned. “I kind of hate you.”

“No you don’t.” He said grinning before walking over to the door. “Oh and I’ll have breakfast ready soon.”

I groaned again before chucking a pillow at him, although he managed to dodge it so it just bounced off the door.

I let myself sit in bed for another five minutes before Zane came back in.

“I’m getting up…eventually.” I mumbled while rubbing my eyes.

“Sage!” He yelled.

“I’m tired not hearing impaired!” I yelled back.

Hailey stopped in front of my doorway. “If you two are going to be yelling and stomping around every morning I might rethink about letting you two live here.” She said before yawning and walking down the hall.

“It’s Zane’s fault not mine!” I called after her.

“Sage.” He said crossing his arms and tapping his foot.

“Fine!” I said getting up. “I’m up.”

He smiled before walking towards the door. “Oh and wear something cute.” He said flashing me a grin.

“Are you saying I don’t always look cute?”

“Not at 6am you don’t.” He muttered before sprinting out the door.

I knew he was joking but my jaw still dropped. “What a dick.” I mumbled before walking down the hall and into the bathroom.

I showered before changing into tight black leggings and a dark grey tank top. I found a dark blue short sleeved off the shoulder crop top that I put on over my tank top before I slipped on the same dark blue colored high heeled ankle boots that were at the bottom of one of my unpacked boxes.

I stomped down the stairs wincing at how loud my shoes were on the hard wood floor. I stepped into the kitchen to see Hailey dressed and ready to go.

“Hey.” She smiled before taking a bite of toast.

“Hi, are you coming with us?” I asked as I sat next to her while Zane handed me a plate with toast and bacon on it.

“No, I’m going to school because somebody didn’t invite me.” She said while giving Zane a playful glare.

“That’s a lie! I invited you before Sage you just said no.”

“I don’t know if that makes me feel bad about myself or not.” I muttered before taking a bite of my bacon.

“Ya but Sage said no as well!” Hailey insisted.

“Ya but Sage was having a bad day.” He said giving me an over exaggerated sympathetic look. I rolled my eyes at him as he looked back at Hailey. “You’re always up beat and happy and sun shiny.”

“She’s sun shiny?” I asked while raising an eyebrow.

“Ya like happy.” He said shrugging.

“But you already said happy.” I pointed out.

“Sage do not ruin my moment!” He said pretending to get mad at me.

I put my arms up in defeat. “Alright! But you can never make any blonde jokes around me.”

“And why’s that?”

“Because sometimes I think you’re more unintelligent then I am.” I said grinning before sticking my tongue out at him.

“Ha. Ha.” He said sarcastically even though he seemed amused. “You’re just mad because I’m better looking than you.”

“That’s it.” I said with heavy sarcasm. “Zane you are so beautiful.”

He smiled. “I knew it.”

After Hailey promised she’d make it to the actual concert tonight she left for school.

“So are you ready to go?” Zane asked as he scooped up one of his jackets.

“Why do we have to leave so early?” I asked while grabbing my bag and following him out the door. He locked it before leading me to his car.

“Why not? It’s not like we have something better to do.”

“Except sleep!” I laughed.

“Sleeping is for losers.” He said brushing my comment off.

“Then call me a loser.” I murmured as we both got in the car. He reversed out of the drive way and started driving. “Don’t rock stars normally take limos?” I asked while giving him a knowing smile.

“Believe it or not, I actually like driving.”

“Well you do have a fantastic car.” I said while admiring the black leather inside of his black Mustang.

“Thanks…it wasn’t cheap.” He said shaking his head almost as if he questioned if the money was worth it.  In my opinion, it totally was.

“So what exactly are we doing all day until the concert?”

“Well mostly workers are still setting things up and about half way through the day we have to rehearse but besides that…basically nothing.”

I let my head fall back and hit the seat. “You’re making me skip school to do nothing?”

“Ya…if I have to do nothing why not drag someone else along?” He said grinning. “We can do nothing together!”

I shook my head at him but my smile betrayed me trying to be serious.

It took us about two hours to get to the stadium, and it was 9:30 by the time we checked in.

“So this is fascinating.” I said as we walked around the empty seats that were higher up for people who didn’t want to be in the giant crowd of people.

“Welcome to the life of a rock star.” He said holding his arms out and gesturing around.

“It’s so exciting.” I said sending him a mocking smile.

“I know…it’s so hard to be me.”

I nearly shoved him over but decided that injuring the lead singer was a bad idea.

Hours passed where he showed me around back stage and introduced me to people. His band members were all extremely nice. We also got our hands on Twister and Monopoly. Once we finished we sat on the edge of the stage and ate lunch. Or what we liked to call lunch.

It consisted of food and drinks we’d gotten from nearby vending machines.

“Maybe we can order pizza for dinner.” Zane said as he took another bite of one of his granola bars.

I opened my Dr. Pepper and took a sip before replying. “I’m sure the address would surprise them.”

“I actually would love to see their faces.”

“Excuse me?” I said trying to mock his tone. “Can you deliver a pizza to the stadium where Fallin from Grace is playing? Ya just go backstage and someone will pay you for it.” We both laughed. “They’d probably think you were playing a prank on them.”

“Then we’d get no pizza.” He said with an almost devastated look which caused as both to laugh again.

“So what do we do now?” I asked as we finished up our wannabe lunch. “I mean beating you in games is fun and all but it’s getting rather boring.”

“Ok, you won Twister because you’re a cheerleader which means you have better balance and are more flexible, and Monopoly is just a game of luck.”

“I’m pretty sure it’s not but ok.” I said laughing.

“Well I do have one last idea…” He said with a devious smile.

“Yes?”

Half an hour later after Zane convinced one of the security guards that we’d be alright, we were sitting in a golf cart. It was one that security guards use to get around faster. The parking lot was empty which is probably why they had said yes in the first place.

“I wonder how fast this goes.” Zane said more to himself then to me.

“This was your great idea?” I asked as he started driving. I held on to one of the bars afraid that I’d fly out at any given second.

“Yeah why not?”

“I’m sure it’s the safest thing.” I said sarcastically.

“Hey, I have never gotten in an accident.” He said defensively.

“I just don’t see the point.” I said as he did a dangerous three-sixty which made me nervous. “I mean all we can do is drive around the parking lot.”

“Does that mean you don’t want to drive?” He asked while grinning. Five minutes later I was driving because I shoved away my pride and admitted it was better than nothing. “See? Isn’t this better than just sitting on the stage?”

“Yes, you were right…it’s better than being overly bored.”

“I’m always right.” He said smugly before crossing his arms.

“Hey Zane? You’re going to need to get out.”

“Why?” He asked while scrunching his eyebrows.

“Because your ego is taking up all the room.”

*********************

After we goofed around for a little while longer Zane was dragged away to start rehearsing.

I spent that amount of time just sitting on the pavement where screaming fans would soon stand. I listened to the music and just bathed in the last bits of the sunlight.

Eventually I went back stage again while people started filing in. Soon it was loud enough out there that you had to shout to whoever you were talking to, and even then you couldn’t guarantee that they could hear you.

Once the opening act had started I met up with Hailey and Nate who had carpooled to get here. We waited off to the side and leaned up against the gates where we could still see the stage. I knew Kalina would be getting here soon but she must be running late.

“I wonder if we’re allowed to go backstage.” Hailey said obviously not excited about the opening act. In all honesty I didn’t even know who they were.

“Probably. I just came from there.” I said shrugging.

My phone vibrated signaling that I had a text message from Kalina.

‘Ok, I’m here and I see you…but don’t be mad.’

I was about to reply and ask why I’d be mad until her and Brad walked up to us, except they weren’t alone.

Aaron was with them.

My phone buzzed again and I looked to see she had sent me another message.

‘I got an extra ticket and brought him along…I thought maybe you could work whatever it is out. Or that all three of you could be friends? Or at least be able to talk to each other without emotions going everywhere.’

I put my phone back in my pocket and gave her a small glare before smiling. “Well since everyone’s here we can probably go backstage now.”

We all went backstage and it took us about five minutes to get to the ‘lounge’ area as Zane liked to call it. The only weird thing was that Zane wasn’t there.

“Where’s Zane?” Hailey said voicing my thoughts.

“He just went out there to look for his friends.” A guy walking by piped in. I recognized him as the drummer in Zane’s band.

I looked over to where he pointed and noticed that it was the door we’d just walked through.

“We passed him and didn’t see him?” Kalina asked as she leaned into Brad.

“I guess.” I said shrugging. We all stood in awkward silence before I cleared my throat. “Well I’ll go find him and bring him back here.” I thought Kalina was about to say something but I cut her off. “Be right back.”

I quickly walked back out the door we’d come through and was back by the gate in no time. I looked around hoping to catch a glance of him but there were too many people.

I was about to give up before an arm wrapped around my waist. I would’ve thought it was Zane but a hand clamped down on my mouth.

My fingers scraped at the hand on my mouth but the hand didn’t budge and I still couldn’t tell who it was.

“Hey!” I heard someone call as the person holding me started moving backwards.  Zane came into view and yanked me away.

I spun around to see Scott.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I asked too stunned to sound furious.

“Last time I checked this was a public concert, it’s not a crime to go to a public place.” He said grinning.

“Ya but last time I checked kidnapping was still illegal.” Zane snapped while putting a protective arm around my shoulders.

“I wasn’t kidnapping her.” Scott sneered back.

“That’s not what it looked like to me.”

“Did she really move on from Aaron so quickly?” I was thinking about snapping at him but he continued talking and didn’t give me the chance to say something. “She really is a slut isn’t she? If you ask me she’s asking for it and whatever she gets, she deserves.”

Again before I could say anything Zane pulled away from me and punched Scott in the face. He stumbled back into the gate while holding his nose which was now bleeding.

“Let’s go.” Zane said under his breath while dragging me away from Scott and back to the rest of our friends. “What’s that guy’s problem?”

“Honestly? I’m not sure.” I said as we paused outside the doorway to the ‘lounge’ area. “He tried to make a move on me once when he was on drugs and he’d been drinking and ever since then he just does things like that…”

“Have you told anyone?”  He asked sounding outraged.

“Aaron…” I mumbled.

“No authorities or anything?”

“It hasn’t been that bad.”

“Promise me you’ll tell someone about it?”

“Like who? I live with friends.” I pointed out.

“I don’t know…a counselor, a teacher, or the cops! Just tell someone.”

“Fine I will.”

He nodded before we walked over to everyone and sat down beside them.

“You found him!” Hailey said grinning.

“Yeah.” I said smiling. “He was just walking around.”

Kalina stated that she actually wanted to watch the last bit of the opening bands performance. So she and Brad said they’d meet us later before they both left.

“Well as exciting as this conversation is, I think I’m going to get some food.” Zane said after a few moments of silence.

“Pizza?” I said hopefully.

He nodded and stood up and was soon followed by Hailey. “Pizza sounds amazing.” She said shrugging. “Plus there are a lot of us which means a lot pizza. I figured you could use help carrying it.”

They both left in search of food, pizza or not, and they left me sitting with Aaron and Nate.

Not gonna lie it’s a little awkward.

“Guys?” I said finally breaking the silence. “I don’t want it to always be like this. I don’t want to not be able to talk to you guys, or just have awkward polite conversations.” They both looked at me shocked at what I had said. “I want us all to be friends.” I said even though I’m sure they were both wondering the same thing as me.

Who gets to be more then friends?

They both gave small nods before Aaron said something. “I’m sure we can all be friends.”

We all sat in silence before Nate decided to say something. “So how about the weather lately?”

All three of us started laughing and maybe it was because of how awkward everything was or just because we were all relieved that the tension was fading.

Hailey came back with pizza but Zane had to go onstage to perform. We all sat backstage and were later joined by Kalina and Brad who came back during the last few songs so they wouldn’t get caught up in the crowd.

We all ate pizza and just talked about how our day had been.

Everything was completely comfortable and fun, but I just couldn’t help not feeling as completely happy as I could.

I waved it away until I was back with Zane in the car after the concert ended.

I couldn’t stop thinking about why life had to be so complicated. Life would be happier and better if it were easier, or if my decisions were made for me. Then I wouldn’t have to choose anything, or anyone.

I wouldn’t have to hurt anyone, and everyone could just be happy. Not to mention I wouldn’t be feeling this way if life were easy.

The world would just be a better place.

“What’s wrong?” Zane said after we’d driven for about a half hour. “Don’t say nothing because I saw the look on your face.”

“If this was some happy world then…there would be no Scott. No one to bother me like that, and my dad and I would just get along. We wouldn’t fight and he would watch me dance and I would go to his business meetings looking respectable, and I wouldn’t antagonize him.” I said as I looked out the window into the darkness. “I would have never had feelings for Nate…and he would’ve never had feelings for me. Aaron and I would finish high school and go off to college…we’d get married and have kids and Zoe would visit us all the time and her cancer would go away. Aaron and I would grow old together…happy and in love.” I said the last part before glancing back at Zane.

He gave me a sad smile. “Sage…”

I didn’t hear what he was going to say before a car came flying into view. “Watch out!” I screamed sitting up straight and putting my hand on the dashboard.

Zane swerved but he wasn’t fast enough. The other car hit his side of the car and we spun around before the car started rolling.

It felt like someone was shaking the entire car.

My head slammed into the passenger window and my vision blurred. Zane yelled something that I didn’t understand as glass flew everywhere.

I don’t know how many times the car rolled but during some point my seat belt started painfully digging into my waist and collarbone.

My head hit something hard again and everything went dark as if the night had taken pity on us and swallowed us up.
