Chapter thirty-eight

Aaron walked back into the waiting room where Brad and I were sitting. We both stood once we saw him.

“Is Zoe ok?” I asked.

“Yeah.” Aaron said out of breath. “She didn’t take her medication this morning like I told her to…I guess I have to watch her more carefully from now on.”

“But she’ll be ok, right?” I asked again.

“Ya she just has to stay here over night and as long as she takes her medication she’ll be fine.”

I let myself breath normally again. “Thank god.” I breathed.

There was an awkward silence where none of us knew what to say before Brad spoke up. “So we’ve got finals next week…”

We all chuckled before Aaron nodded. “Yeah, are you guys ready?” We both nodded. “Good.” He murmured.

“Can I see her?” I piped in.

He shook his head. “The doctor doesn’t want to overwhelm her.”

“That makes sense.” I sighed.

Brad and I stayed for another hour anyway before Brad took me home.

I couldn’t sleep that night, even though Aaron had said that Zoe would be alright, I was still worried.

Sunday went by in a blur as well since Zoe was in the hospital for half the day and when I called Aaron he said she was sleeping.

I just sulked until I decided to go to bed an hour earlier then I usually do.

When I woke up the next morning I slipped on some grey baggy sweats and a black tank top that showed off just a strip of my stomach. I straightened my hair and slipped on my black Toms before heading out the door without saying goodbye to either Hailey or Zane who were both in Zane’s room with the door closed. I figured it was safer to just leave then possibly walk into another awkward situation.

This week was finals week which made me even less excited about life.

Luckily I got to Friday and was feeling really good about all my tests.

Kalina and I were sitting in dance class listening to our teacher talk about a small extra credit project that we could do before school ended.

“You’ll have to recreate a dance from a movie and video tape yourself dancing to it. You’ll need costumes slightly like the ones used in the movie and you’ll need to be in a similar environment. Dance moves need to be almost exactly the same. Turn in the movie clip and the clip of your group dancing for full extra credit points. It’s due next Friday, good luck.” She said smiling at the whole class.

Kalina and I grinned at each other.

It wasn’t that we needed extra credit it just sounded fun.

“Step up?” She asked with her grin still plastered across her face.

“Revolution.” I said nodding before fist bumping her.

After class ended we spent whatever free time we had during school asking around seeing if people would be willing to help us out.

We got five girls from our dance class, two from our cheerleading team, and all the boys from the cheerleading team as well to agree to be in the dance with us.

We’d decided on the dinner flash mob dance from the movie; we figured it was the easiest to pull off.

I tried to make Kalina agree to do lead, but she refused. Everyone we talked to said that I should do it. I didn’t mind, I just didn’t want to be someone who always demands to be in the spot light. Brad had to play the male lead as well, which he was excited for.

After school Kalina and I invited Brad, Aaron, Zane, Hailey and Nate to go out to dinner at the place we were planning on flash mobbing next week.

Kalina and I both agreed it was perfect, before we explained to Nate, Aaron, Zane and Hailey what we would be doing.

After we ordered dinner I cleared my throat. “So guys…I was wondering if you guys would be interested in going on vacation this summer?” I asked nervously while shooting a glance over at Aaron and Nate. They both agreed before I invited them to dinner together that they were actually becoming friends. I considered it more of that they tolerated each other and nothing else.

“Where?” Kalina said excitedly.

“My dad gave me my mom’s old vacation house…in Hawaii.” I said breaking out into a grin. Kalina squealed and did a small happy dance in her chair. “We’ll only go if Zoe gets better.” I added looking back at Aaron.

“That could be fun.” He said nodding back at me.

“Nate?” I said turning to him.

“Sounds like the best way to spend my summer.” He grinned.

“Zane?”

“Sure, why not? I’ll just skip a few concerts.” I shot him a look. “I meant cancel.” He said smiling at me.

“Hailey?”

“I was just going to work all summer anyway, and this sounds way more fun.” She laughed.

“Brad? You’re the last person.” I said with a small knowing smile.

“Well then I have to say yes.” He said in a ‘duh’ voice.

***************

The next day Nate took me to a private part of the nearby beach.

I had to wear the same bathing suit I got when Aaron and I skipped school.

Nate had set up a rather dangerous looking device; it was an inner tube on a long ramp with a rope attached to it. The other end of the rope was attached to a quad going the opposite way that the inner tube would go.

“What is this?” I laughed. “It doesn’t exactly look safe.”

Nate scoffed. “It’s perfectly safe.”

I raised an eyebrow at him. “Have you tested it?”

“Well…no.” He said rubbing the back of his neck. “But I’ll go first.”

I decided that he probably wouldn’t give up on the idea and there was no way I was going first so I let him get on the inner tube after he explained how to drive the quad.

“I am not responsible for any injury that you get.” I yelled before starting the quad. I drove full speed away from Nate and didn’t stop until I heard him shout.

I looked back just in time to see him release the inner tube and literally go flying off the ramp. He landed a ways away in the water.

I ran to the edge of the water with my mouth wide open.

“Cool huh?” He asked shaking the water from his hair.

“That was awesome!” I exclaimed.

“You want to try?” He said grinning.

I nodded and dashed to the inner tube before laying down on my stomach on it.

He looked back and gave me a questioning thumbs up. “Ready!” I called to him.

He started going and the air whipped my hair back away from my face. I let go of the inner tube right as I reached the end of the ramp and I was catapulted into the air. I shrieked before waving my arms and splashing into the water.

I resurfaced laughing. I swam back to shore where Nate met me still smiling.

“Fun, right?” I nodded still not having gotten over the excitement I felt. He looked down and part of me thought he was looking at the sand but he tilted his head to the side as if he realized something. “So that’s what your tattoo says.”

I looked down and saw that a little more than half of my ‘Aaron’ tattoo was showing. “Oh…” I said awkwardly. “Ya…I got that in Paris.”

“I know.” He said giving me a small smile.

“Want to go again?” I said trying to break the tension.

“Sure.” He said quietly.

We took turns going while the other one would drive the quad.

Around my fifth time I must have landed in the water wrong or accidentally hit myself in the face or something because when I swam back to shore I noticed my nose was bleeding. “Shit.” I said under my breath.

“Sage, are you ok?” Nate said running over to me.

“I think I need a napkin or something.”

“Of course, come here.” He said pulling me back over to our stuff. He grabbed a paper towel and handed it to me.

“Thanks.” I said as I put it up to my nose.

“I’m sorry.” He said while raking his hand through his hair.

“It’s not your fault.” I laughed. “I probably did something stupid to make it happen.”

“But if I hadn’t set everything it up it never would’ve happened…if I hadn’t…” He sighed before cutting himself off.

“Hadn’t what?” I asked trying to get him to look at me.

“If I hadn’t tried to be more like Aaron.” I scrunched my eyebrows at him still confused. “You always told me about how he would take you to do things, and you’d break the rules or you’d do something that was a rush.” He explained. “I guess I was just trying to do things that Aaron would have you do…I guess I thought you would like me more if I was…more like him.”

“I like you for you.” I said putting my hand on his arm.

“But not love.” He said sadly. “You like, but don’t love me.”

After that we packed everything up and he took me home.

I went straight upstairs to shower before I changed into my ‘Seattle’ sweatshirt and yoga pants. I swept my hair into a pony tail before lying on my bed and just looked at my ceiling.

“You like but don’t love me.” I mumbled to myself.

Is it possible to love both Aaron and Nate? They’re both wonderful.

Aaron helped me realize I couldn’t let people push me around and that I had to do what I wanted to.

Nate made me feel safe and secure. I knew he’d never leave or hurt me.

Aaron and I had been through so much, and I mean I had his name on my hip.

But Nate was there when I needed him most.

Maybe I should just become a lesbian? I’m sure I could steal Hailey from Zane…or at least share her.

No scratch that idea. That’s not happening.

If I chose Nate I felt like I was choosing a guaranteed happy relationship, a safe relationship a sweet and caring relationship.

If I chose Aaron I felt like I was choosing an unpredictable relationship, a desirable exciting relationship, and a relationship that either left you feeling wanted or scared.

Why is this so hard?

Because I want two different things.

 Why am I so complicated?

I blame the blonde hair.

I must have laid there for another hour before I got up and slipped into faded jeans and my black Toms.

It was only 10pm but I still quietly left the house and got in my car and drove.

I made my choice. I just hoped that in the end, it was the right choice.

Once I got to his house I just sat in my car for another good twenty minutes. I walked to his door and turned back once ready to bolt before turning back towards his door.

I took a deep breath, waited another five minutes just standing outside his front door before finally getting the courage to knock.

I waited and kind of hoped that he wouldn’t answer but I heard the door knob turning and I took another deep breath.

He opened the door and rubbed his eyes, he must have been asleep.

“I choose you.” I breathed.

Well it was almost it. ;) I guess you'll have to wait for the next chapter to find out which one she chose. :) Hope you're not to mad.

Suspense is a good thing, just remember that. :P Have a goodnight everyone!
