Chapter ten

I looked myself over in the mirror nearly ready for school. I had on a light pink long sleeved baggy sweater with a tight black pencil skirt that stopped mid-thigh. I had on dark brown lace up ankle boots and a black scarf with a floral pattern wrapped loosely around my neck.

I snatched an apple from the table before walking out the door.

“You don’t want that.” Aaron said coming out of nowhere and snatching the apple from my hands.

“Hey!” I protested trying to take it back. “That’s my breakfast.”

“Wouldn’t you rather have real breakfast food?” He said while grinning at me.

“Ya but school starts in like half an hour.” I said looking at my phone.

“What’s your first period?” He said leading me over to his truck.

“Dance.”

“So P.E. I think you can stand to skip it just this once.”

I laughed. “Maybe.”

“Come on. Your grade won’t suffer at all…just say you woke up late.”

I sighed. “Ok.”

Half an hour later we were at the local Pancake house. I was eating waffles with whip cream and strawberries with scrambled eggs and bacon. While Aaron was eating French toast with bacon and hash browns.

“See this is way better then school.” He said in between bites.

“True, but my dad will kill me if he finds out about this.”

“Well let’s make sure he never finds out.” He said leaning across the table to kiss me. “Mm…you taste like strawberries.” He mumbled.

“Um thanks.” I laughed. “You taste like sugar.” I said motioning to the powdered sugar on his French toast.

After we were done eating we got back in his truck and we were soon parked in the school parking lot. I glanced at the clock to see that second period would be starting in five minutes.

“See we got back on time. We only missed one class.” He said tapping the clock.

“And we still have five minutes.” I smiled before unbuckling and snuggling closer to him.

I heard him unbuckle his own seat belt before he pulled me into his lap. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders before leaning closer and kissing him. Our tongues danced together as his fingers played at the edge of my shirt. I grabbed handfuls of his hair in my hands. He moaned as I slid my own hands down his chest and he kissed away from my mouth down to my chin before kissing down to my neck. I could feel his teeth scrape against my neck and I leaned my head farther back opening my neck up more to him.

He stopped and looked at me breathing hard. “We’ll be late for second period.”

I looked over my shoulder at the clock to see we had one minute before class started. “I can stand to be a little later.”

**********

I was upstairs putting aside all the things I needed for our first cheerleading competition which was tomorrow. I scrunched my eyebrows at the thought of having to spend my whole Saturday at a cheer competition.

I heard the front door open and my dad beginning to stomp up the stairs.

I threw my cheer uniform on my desk before shoving sweats and a tank top in my sports bag with a pair of converse.

I heard my door open and I turned to see my dad with his arms crossed in my doorway.

“Hey.” I smiled setting everything aside while sitting on my bed.

“You were late to school today?” He said ignoring my smile which quickly faded.

“I was at school halfway through second period…I wasn’t that late.”

“You shouldn’t have been late at all Sage!” He yelled which made me flinch.

“I didn’t mean to be that late Dad I just…”

“You just what?” He snapped.

“I didn’t hear my alarm go off and I slept a little longer then intended.” I said quickly remembering he hadn’t been home when I woke up.

“And why were you so tired?” He demanded.

“I don’t know, I’m a teenager I have a lot of homework. Get off my case.” I mumbled.

“What’d you just say? ‘Get off your case’? Sage you shouldn’t have a case! You should be a respectful responsible young girl.”

“Dad it was one mistake it won’t happen again…I promise.” I said standing up.

“You shouldn’t make mistakes.” He said relentlessly.

I shook my head and stormed into my bathroom closing the door before he could say anything more. I turned the shower on and just slid down the wall before putting my head in my hands.

My phone buzzed in the pocket off my shorts that I’d changed into earlier. I pulled it out to see a text from Aaron.

‘Hey…you ok?’

I felt myself begin to smile before replying.

‘Can you hear the yelling?’

‘Your window’s open.’

‘Oh, maybe I should close that.’

‘You can close it in a minute ok?’

I scrunched my eyebrows together.

‘Why?’

I heard someone knock on the bathroom door as I waited for his reply.

“Go away dad!” I yelled through the door. My phone buzzed again and my dad didn’t say anything which I found strange.

‘It’s not your dad.’

I sprang to my feet and opened the door to see Aaron grinning. I resisted the urge to squeal as I threw myself in his arms.

“Well hello to you too.” He laughed as I turned off the shower.

“How did you get in here?” I whispered as I led him back into my room checking that the door was closed. “There is no way my dad let you in.”

“Why do you think I wanted the window open?” He said in a ‘duh’ voice.

“But how-“ I started before he cut me off.

“I also have this great thing called a ladder.”

I smirked at him before lightly shoving his shoulder.

I laid back on my bed before he laid next to me wrapping his arms around me as I placed my head on his shoulder. I sighed as I closed my eyes. “You know you’re going to have to sneak out later…you know that right?”

“Ya.” He laughed. “But I’m just going to enjoy this moment for now.” I scooted closer to him and smiled as he carefully turned off the light. “Are you excited for your competition tomorrow?” I heard him mumble.

“Ya it should be fun.” I said pretty sure I sounded sleepy. I opened one eye to check the clock to see that it was only ten.

“I won’t be there right away but I’ll be there to see you compete.” I could feel his chest vibrate as he said each word.

“Ok.” I said before yawning. There was a moment of silence where I thought Aaron had fallen asleep because the only sound I could hear was the sound of his heart beating. “I can hear your heart beating.” I murmured.

“Ok…just make sure you let me know if I’m dead or not, alright?” He said sounding just as sleepy as I did.

“Not funny.” I slurred my words.

***********

I woke up to find that Aaron was already gone. I sighed before sitting up and rubbing my eyes. I jumped in the shower before slicking my hair back in a high pony tail before putting on my cheerleading outfit and grabbing my sports bag.

I skipped out to my car and started driving over to the school where our team bus was waiting for us.

I slumped down in the seat in front of Kalina. I tossed my bag on the floor before stretching my feet out in front of me, taking up the whole seat.

I leaned my head against the window as Kalina rested her chin on the top of my seat. “Hey chica.” She said smiling at me.

“Hey.” I said with little enthusiasm.

“What’s wrong?” She said taking in my mood.

“I’m just tired. Tired because of little sleep and hiding Aaron from my dad, and fighting with my dad. It’s just tiring.”

“It’ll get better.” She said awkwardly patting my shoulder which made me laugh. “I’m sure your dad will come around eventually.” I raised an eyebrow and gave her my best quizzical look. “Or he’ll just learn to deal with you being with Aaron.”

“That sounds like the most likely thing.” I said letting my eyes close. “Or he’ll always hate Aaron and he’ll disown me which means I can’t pay for college and I’ll end up somewhere like a trailer park with no educational value.” I said quickly. “And I’ll probably be a stripper.”

“I think they prefer the term ‘exotic dancer’.” She corrected me. “But that sounds like the life.” She said while grinning.

It took us nearly an hour to get to the town holding the competition. I walked in to see too many cheer teams to count but I was told that there were twenty-five of us.

Brad jokingly bumped my shoulder. “You ready for this.” He asked as everyone began stretching.

“I’m nervous.” I admitted sitting down and reaching for my toes.

“Don’t be you’ll do great.”

“I’m just hoping I won’t mess up.” I mumbled.

“You won’t.” He said trying to encourage me.

We sat around for nearly two hours as I watched team after team go by for their turn.

I finally heard our school name being called and Kalina helped me to my feet before we all ran out on stage cheering and smiling.

I searched the stands for my dad and Aaron, but I only saw one of them.

My dad wasn’t here. I know he doesn’t approve of me dancing and being a cheerleader but I thought he’d be here. He knew how important this was to me.

Aaron waved and smiled I returned the grin before we put our heads down and started dancing to My First Kiss by 3OH!3. Kalina and I had thought we should come up with a new routine for the competition but everyone else thought we should perfect this one and make a new one for if we made it into the next round. Brad and I however had managed to make a new dance and perfect it as well.

After we finished we all smiled waved and walked off stage where we had to wait for the next two and a half hours until the duet dances started.

My dance with Brad was fifteenth out of the twenty five groups. So from the time our cheer team dance had ended we all had time to go get lunch at a Subway that was across the street.

I faintly heard our names being called as I finished a math problem on my math homework.

Brad nearly dragged me to my feet and on stage as he bent down to grab our prop suit case on the way.

I looked out into the audience and saw Aaron but still no sign of my dad. I could feel myself frown but I wasn’t going to let my dad’s presence affect me here.

I heard Bleeding love begin to play and I cast a final glance at Aaron before Brad and I began to dance.

Everything went by in a blur and the next thing I knew all the cheer teams were out on the stage with fingers crossed and nervous faces while holding each other’s hands.

Our cheer team came in 10th out of twenty five. And Brad and I came in 12th out of twenty five. We all jumped up and down screaming and hugging each other. Even Nadia looked ecstatic.

“We’re moving on!” Brad exclaimed before picking me up and spinning me around as I laughed.

The next competition would be between the top fifteen in each group.

After we were all allowed to leave I quickly made my way to the audience and into Aaron’s open arms. “Congratulations!” He said spinning me around just as Brad had.

“Thank you so much for coming.” I said quickly kissing him on the lips.

“I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” He said before kissing me again. “Can I drive you home?” He asked after a few moments of us just listening to everyone talking or cheering or crying.

“I would love that…except I have to take the bus…team rules.” I said with a fake pout on my face.

He mimicked my look. “Rules are no fun.”

“We can break rules later…I promise.” I said before kissing him again.
