Chapter Seventeen

“Hey.” I said sitting down across from Brad in a café across the street from the hotel we were all staying in.

“Hi.” He said smiling as he looked up from his menu.

“How was dinner with the squad last night?” I asked while opening my own menu.

“It was fun. I kind of wish Nadia wasn’t there, but she’ll always be at those things.” He said shrugging.

The waitress walked up asking for our orders and temporarily interrupting our conversation.

“Chocolate milk.” I said smiling.

“Coffee.” Brad answered.

“Are you two ready to order?” She asked as she scribbled down our drinks.

“I’ll have the turkey sandwich with a salad.” He said before handing her his menu.

“I’ll have a bowl of Trix cereal and a butter croissant please.”

She nodded before taking our menus and leaving.

“I take you to a café and you order cereal a croissant and chocolate milk?” He asked while laughing at me.

“I promised nothing.” I said putting my hands up in defense.

We made light conversation until our food arrived.

“Sage…I have a question.”

“Sure, ask anything.”

“You’re like best friends with Kalina right?”

“I would like to say so, ya.” I said laughing before taking a bite of my croissant. “Why?”

“Well…I was kind of thinking about asking her out.” He said while starting to shred his napkin.

I smiled. “I think that’s a great idea.”

“Do you think she’ll say yes?”

“Honestly…I have no idea.” I said leaning my elbows on the table. “But I think it’s worth a try to ask her. I’m positive you have a way better chance than any of the other guys she knows.”

“Really?” He said with the hint of a smile.

“Ya the last guy she went on a date with turned out to be a total ass.” I said as my mind drifted to Scott. He hadn’t been talking to me but he was still on the squad and I still saw him at school, but he hadn’t been talking to me or acknowledging me. Although at the end of our routine he has to help lift me up and be part of my base.

“Ok…I’ll ask her out if we win today.”

“Mm.” I said while finishing my sip off chocolate milk. “Speaking of the competition we should be getting there soon if we want to practice our duet one last time.”

*************

After rushing there and practicing our duet twice we gathered with our whole team and practiced our routine once.

Then we had to go on. We were dancing to We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift.

Everything was fine until Scott and Brad had to lift me up so I could do a scorpion for a few seconds before spinning and landing back in their arms. It was going perfectly until they caught me and while they were placing me back on my feet Scotts hand grabbed my ass.

I looked over shocked before he flashed me a devious grin.

Part of me was shocked but I had to shake it off as I ran and did a triple front hand spring ending with a full before landing in the splits.

The crowd erupted into applause and for once I actually had to force my smile.

The whole team faded away as I stood up from my splits and Brad came to stand beside me.

Heavy in Your Arms by Florence and the Machine started playing signaling us to start our duet.

Once our dance ended the crowd cheered and my smile was genuine because I had forgotten everything that happened with Scott only moments before.

We rushed off stage as another team ran on.

We nearly collided into Kalina.

“Ustedes eran increíbles! Felicitaciones.” She said before hugging me. “You guys were amazing.” She said quickly clarifying.

“Thanks.” I laughed.

I noticed that Brad had disappeared and that confused me because I thought he’d want to talk to Kalina.

“Well…that’s it.” She said sighing. “It’s over, everything’s done.”

“It’s kind of sad.” I nodded. “I’ll miss the dancing but…I can deal without some of these people.” I murmured so only she could hear.

“I knew you were mad at me!” She said while jokingly crossing her arms and sticking her chin in the air.

“Oh, you got me.” I put my hands up in mock defeat.

“Kalina?” Brad said interrupting our fake fight.

“Ya?” She said turning to him and redoing her pony tail.

“I was wondering if…you’d want to go on a date with me sometime?” He said while nervously handing her a bouquet of flowers that he had hidden behind his back.

She looked stunned and happy as she took the flowers from him. “I would love to.” She said smiling.

“Kalina!” We all flinched as Nadia snapped at her.

“Ugh.” She groaned with her shoulders drooping. “I’ll be back.”

As she walked away I jokingly bumped Brad. “I thought you were going to wait until we won?”

“I was going to but…I decided if we didn’t win I would chicken out so I wanted to ask her before we found out.”

Nearly three hours later after a lot of cheer poker which Kalina and I had made up, your money was scrunchies, make up, shoes, socks, and pom poms; the guys didn’t play long, but we were finally back on the stage awaiting the final scores for this season.

That’s when I realized that this would be my only competition since it was my senior year. My old cheer team was never good enough to make it this far.

Before I had time to really think about the cheer teams were called; and we were second.  They handed us the second place trophy and of course Nadia was the one to snatch it from their hands. It wasn’t as great as it could’ve been but we weren’t last out of the three teams here.

Then Kalina was gripping my hand so hard and digging her nails into my skin that she could’ve drawn blood.

I caught Aaron’s eyes as they called the third place winners. It wasn’t us. Which means Brad and I were either first or second.

“And first place goes to…” The announcer said as he slowly pulled a piece of paper from a gold envelope. “Brad and Sage! And second place-“ The rest of his sentence was cut off by our team screaming and the crowd clapping and shouting.

I was going to hug Brad but when I turned he was already kissing Kalina.

I shrugged at the girl who was handing me the trophy. I barely said ‘thank you’ before I sprinted off the stage and into Aaron’s arms.

“You are so amazing.” He muttered into my hair.

“Thank you.” I said smiling before kissing him.

He carefully set me down just in time for some squealing girl to wrap her arms around me.

Aaron scrunched his eyebrows together as she continued screaming. “You were so wonderful!” The tone of her voice nearly shattered my ear drums.

‘Who is she?’ I mouthed to Aaron as she began swaying from side to side. I couldn’t see her because she was hugging me from behind.

He shook his head showing that he had no idea.

She finally let me go and I turned to finally get a look at her face. “Long time no see right?” She said holding her arms out.

“Heather!” I screamed before throwing myself back in her arms. “I can’t believe you’re here!”

“Congrats on winning! I never knew you were so kick ass!” She said as we pulled away from each other.

“Thanks?” I laughed. She glanced over at Aaron expectantly. “Oh! Heather this is my boyfriend, Aaron.”

“Hey.” He said extending his hand to her.

“Hi, it’s nice to meet you.”  She said shaking his hand.

After looking around and getting congratulations from Nate and Aaron’s family, I looked for my father but he was nowhere to be seen, as usual.

Somehow this hurt more than him missing all the others. This was my last competition in my high school life, and he missed it. There wasn’t even an ‘I’m sorry’ text message.

**********

Since the competition ended so late the whole team was staying at the hotel for another night and Aaron and his family had decided to stay as well.

“Come back!” He laughed as I darted around a table. He moved to the left and I moved with him so he couldn’t gain any distance towards me. “I just want to kiss you goodnight!”

“You’ll have to catch me!” I said grinning.

I took off sprinting towards the elevators and hit the button before passing it. Aaron chased me around the lobby once more before I flew into the opening elevator and hit a random floor before hitting the close doors button. He was racing towards the doors but they were closing and he wasn’t going to make it. I stuck my tongue out just as the doors closed. I was going to floor five. The elevator dinged as I reached the floor and sprinted down the hall.  I crawled under a room service cart that had a sheet so I couldn’t be seen.

I heard running footsteps and the elevator opening before I heard a sound between a laugh and a sigh.

“Excuse me?” I heard him say as he walked closer. I was sure he’d found me until he continued. “Have you seen a blonde girl running around here?”

“The elevator opened and she went up a floor or so, I’m not exactly sure.” Said a high pitched slightly Hispanic voice.

I scrunched my eyebrows together as I heard him thank her before jogging to the elevator.

The cart started moving and I nearly tumbled off. After I heard the elevator doors close I was debating how I was going to get off the cart when I heard laughter. It was a laugh that I knew extremely well.

I rolled off the cart and onto the floor to look up at Kalina. “What are you doing?” I asked while laughing.

“I was bored and I saw you both running around so I figured why not help?” She said shrugging.

I looked her up and down to see that she had on white skinny jeans a white t-shirt and a black hat on that hid her hair and half her face. “Aaron really isn’t the smartest person.” I said shaking my head.

“Ya.” She said while laughing. “But you have a ton of time before he’ll find you.”

“Huh?” I said scrunching my eyebrows again.

“Brad got in the elevator at the next floor up and he’s going to push every button for each floor.” She  said as her grin grew wider.

“You rock.” I laughed before giving her a quick hug and taking off down the hall and into the stairwell.

As soon as the door shut I heard the sound of someone landing on the floor and a deep voice shouting. “Boo!”

I screamed as I spun and tumbled down a whole flight of stairs.

“Oh my god!” I heard Aaron say as he rushed down the stairs towards me. He picked me up as I continued to hysterically laugh like I had as soon as I’d hit the last step. “Are you ok?” He asked not convinced by my laughter.

“No, I’m fine.” I said as soon as I calmed down. “How did you find me?” I said finally stepping out of his arms.

“Brad.” He said shrugging.

My mouth opened in shock. “We’re dancing buddies! How could he sell me out?”

“Bros before hoes.” He shrugged again.

“Ya, ya.” I said before jokingly shoving him.

“Can I have my goodnight kiss now?” He said stepping closer.

I groaned before carelessly throwing my head back like it was the most tedious thing in the world.

He was grinning as he kissed me.

I deepened the kiss and pushed him against the wall. His hands slid down my back and he picked me up so I could wrap my legs around his waist before he turned so I was against the wall. I grabbed handfuls of his hair in my hands as his lips trailed down to my neck. He kissed my neck as my hands slid down to grip his shoulders.

I pulled back and he tried to lean closer to kiss me again but I turned my head so all he got was my cheek. I gave him a devilish grin as I dropped back onto my feet. “Goodnight.” I said before slipping from his grasp and jogging down the stairs.
