Chapter forty-six

“Aaron?” I said again while leaning on the doorway.

“How’d you get in?” He said wiping his cheek with the back of his hand.

“Your mom let me in.” I said sitting next to him on his bed. His back was to me and he refused to meet my eyes. “How are you doing?” I asked carefully. “You haven’t talked to me in two weeks…did I do something?” I glanced down at his hands just now realizing that he had one of Zoe’s stuffed animals.

“She’s gone.” He said so quiet that I could barely hear him.

“What?”

He turned to look at me and I could see the tears in his eyes and streaking down his face. “She’s gone Sage…Zoe, she died.” He started breaking down so I pulled him closer and just held him as I let his words sink in. “She didn’t get better.” He said wrapping his arms around me in return. “She was never getting better.”

I could feel tears falling down my cheeks but I stayed silent. This isn’t about me, it’s about Aaron. So I just sat there and listened to him cry as I held him in my arms.

He stood up shaking his head. “Aaron?” I asked confused on why he had pulled away so fast.

He shook his head refusing to look back at me. “She’s gone, Sage! She’s gone!” He screamed as he walked to the other side of his room. I wiped the tears from my face as he scraped his hands through his hair. He swiped everything off his desk in one angry motion. “She’s not coming back! And I wasn’t even here for her! I got back when she was in the hospital a week before she died!” He knocked his chair over and threw a picture that had been hanging on the wall, across the room. “A week. One week before she died! I was gone all summer and I came back a week before she died!” He knocked over his lamp and I sprinted across the room and grabbed his shoulders.

“Stop! Stop it Aaron!”

“I can’t! I can’t because as soon as I calm down I’m left alone with my thoughts and they’re filled with her. She’s all I can think about.” He said while grabbing my arms and shaking me. “I should’ve been here for her! I should’ve treated her better.” Tears raced down his face and his knees gave out. I tried to catch him but we both crashed to the floor. He hid his face in my shoulder and sobbed. “I can’t be alone with my thoughts. I can’t…I can’t.”

I wrapped my arms around him as he cried harder. “I won’t leave you alone.” I whispered.

************

Aaron didn’t talk to me for another few days before he knocked on my bedroom door. “Hailey let me in.” He mumbled while awkwardly walking into my room.

“That’s cool.” I said nodding my head not wanting to accidentally set him off somehow.

“I’m sorry.” He said suddenly. “I don’t want you to think that I’m weak.”

“Why would I ever think you were weak?” I asked while standing up and scrunching my eyebrows.

“Because you saw me bawling…like a baby.”

“Aaron…you had every right to be crying. You’re sister died, that gives you every right to cry and scream and break things. You’re not weak. Especially showing up here, pulled together and trying not to let this consume you…that shows me that you are the strongest person I know.” I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and pulled him in for a hug. He hesitated before wrapping his arms around my waist. I heard him take a deep breath before he slowly exhaled as if he was calming himself down.

“I know you were mad at me for leaving and fighting with you…but I can’t lose another person.” He said as he pulled away from me.

“Aaron that’s not important anymore. I forgot all about it.” I said shaking my head.

After he left that day went just as normal as any other day, I spent it doing last minute wedding details. I canceled the bachelorette party and just sat at home watching some wedding movies with Hailey and Kalina. I didn’t want to have a party, not when Zoe wasn’t around to be there.

“Have you decided what you’re doing after the wedding?” Hailey asked in between movies.

“Well we’re going on a honeymoon.” I said as if it were obvious. “He won’t tell me where though.”

“No, I meant like are you going to keep living here or somewhere else? Are you going to college?”

“We talked about getting our own apartment, and I decided on going to that college Brad and I were accepted to.”

“That sounds nice.” She said nodding.

After the next movie both Kalina and Hailey fell asleep but I didn’t get much sleep that night.

The rehearsal dinner was the next day and I’d convinced Brad to dance with me after the dinner. We were dancing to a song called Listen to your heart.

I had changed into a simple white dancing dress, while Brad was in white pants. We were both hiding behind the curtains on the stage as I heard someone clink their fork against their glass.

“Hey everyone.” I heard Nate say and I smiled. “You have no idea how happy I am to be marrying the girl I love, and my best friend, Sage.”

“Where is the lovely Bride to be?” I heard Zane yell and my smile turned into a full grin.

“Sage and Brad actually planned a dance for us.” Nate replied.

Brad and I stepped away from each other as the curtains opened, the lights shone in our eyes and the music began to play.

After the dance people came up to us and told us how good we were and congratulated me on being engaged.

My dad walked up to me smiling. “Sage.” He breathed before pulling me in for a hug. “I’m so sorry for never paying attention to your dancing.” He said pulling away. “You are incredible. If this is something you want to pursue, I won’t be in your way anymore. I’m sorry I missed all your competitions. You have more talent than I could have imagined.”

“Aw, Dad.” I said smiling and hugging him again.

“I am so happy for you.” He said still smiling from ear to ear. “I wasn’t too keen on you getting married young, but if it’s what you want then I’m on your side. I’m sorry that I didn’t try and see your point of view, and I’m sorry I treated you so poorly.”

“Dad, it’s ok…really. I love you.”

“I love you too, Sage.”

He smiled and rubbed my arm before walking away and I turned around nearly colliding into Hailey.

“Woa.” I laughed steadying her so she wouldn’t fall.

“Sage, I have something for you.” She said holding out a folded piece of paper. “I’d read it later though.” She said handing it to me and walking away.

I slipped the note into my bra and didn’t find it until later that night when I was changing for bed.

I carefully opened it and read it.

“Listen to your heart before you tell him goodbye.” I hope you listen to your heart, Sage.
-Aaron.

Aaron had been there, and he hadn’t said a word to me.

****************

I was sitting in my room two days later in my wedding dress. Hailey and Kalina had just finished my hair and they left to go check that everything was ready.

It was finally the big day.

I turned my iPhone on shuffle and looked at my reflection in the mirror. Remember When by Chris Wallace came on.

My hair was done up in delicate curls with a few still hanging down around my face. I had on light make-up and shiny lip gloss. My engagement ring dug into my finger with my French tip nails and a pearl necklace from my grandmother hung around my neck. I had on white strappy shoes that went perfectly with my dress. My dress had a sweet heart neckline and was strapless. It was covered in delicate lace designs and poofed out at my waist and went down to my feet.

Some of the words in the song caught my attention.

‘Take take take me back, I wanna go back,
Back to what we had! Do you remember when we started this mess,
My heart was beating out of my chest!’

I’d heard this song so many times before but I’d never truly cared about the lyrics, until now.

‘Oh we were flying so high, yeah partners in crime,
So why’d we ever say goodbye?,
Remember when we, when we, had it all
Do you remember when…
Wish I was still the only one running cross your mind,
I guess I just wanted you to know
Oh from your ruby lips to your fingertips,
I can’t believe I let you go,’

The door opened and it startled me. I jumped and turned to see who had walked in.

“That’s a good song.” He said grinning.

I smiled a small smile. “Aaron…you came.”

I'm sorry, I know it's sad. I hope you still liked the chapter though.
