"What," Dylan almost shouted as he got up from his chair. Those were probably the last words he would have expected to come out of her mouth in that moment.

"How," he yelled.

"How do you think, genius," Rosalie snapped back.

Dylan took a breath to try to calm himself down. "I mean, I thought you were on birth control," he said, trying to keep his voice calm.

"I was. I mean, I am. But my period is a week late," she said, sounding exasperated.

She ran her hands through her hair as she turned and made her way to the couch placed against the left wall. "Maybe I missed a pill, or it just didn't work. I don't know," she mumbled.

"Are you sure," he asked as he dropped down on the couch next to her.

"No. And I'm too scared to take the test," she said, her voice coming out low. She looked up at Dylan and her eyes were brimming with tears. He had never seen her cry before and it felt like someone had punched his heart when he saw her like that.

He brought her head to his chest and wrapped an arm around her. "I'll get it for you. I'll be right there, okay? I'm sure it'll be fine," he consoled her.

"For you maybe," she scoffed as she pulled away from him. "We've got less than nine months left for this marriage so by the time the baby comes, you'll be free to do whatever you want. Meanwhile, I'm the one that will get stuck with it," she continued and then put her head in her hands as she started sobbing.

"Why would you think that, Rose?" Dylan was hurt that she thought that way about him. He didn't want to leave her. Heck, he would have even liked to stay with her even if she wasn't pregnant.

He took her face in his hands and forced her to look at him. "No matter what happens, I'll be with you all the way," he assured her while wiping her tears with his thumbs.

"But what about the contract," she sniffed.

"I think baby trumps contract, Rose," he stated matter-of-factly.

She placed her head on his chest and he wrapped both his arms around her, snuggling her close.

"You're just saying that because you're old and probably want a baby. I'm too young for this," she complained.

"I'm only twenty-seven," Dylan grumbled.

"Old," she asserted and he couldn't help but chuckle.

She stayed in his embrace. Suddenly, the thought of having a family with her didn't seem like a terrible idea. He could picture spending his life with her. Maybe, this baby was a blessing in disguise.

"Why don't you head home and I'll grab the pregnancy test and meet you there," he offered once she had finally calmed down. Rosalie nodded and then pulled away from him.

"I have to say, you handled that a lot better than I did," she mentioned as she picked up her purse.

"What did you expect I would do," Dylan asked with a laugh.

"I don't know. Yell? Get pissed off? Cry, maybe?" She shrugged. "But I think I did enough of that for the both of us," she pursed her lips.

"Well, I'm sorry to disappoint," he replied.

Rosalie chuckled and made her way to the door. Just before turning the handle and and opening it, she turned around.

"Thanks, Dylan," she gave him a weak smile. He returned it with an even bigger one and she left.

When Dylan finally made his way home, it was almost dark outside. He grabbed a couple of pregnancy tests on the way. Upon entering the house, he couldn't find any signs of Rosalie. He walked up to her room and let himself in after knocking. She was walking out of her closet when he entered.

"Hey, I got the test," he informed.

"Guess what arrived before you did," Rosalie asked gleefully.

"What?" Dylan looked confused.

"My period, dummy," she beamed.

"Oh," was all Dylan managed to say.

"God, you have no idea how relieved I am," Rosalie started ranting but Dylan couldn't help feel a small pang of disappointment.

"We don't have to get rid of the contract anymore," she exclaimed with joy.

"Yeah. That's great," he replied dryly.

The truth was, he had come home with the intention of telling Rosalie the truth about how he felt. He didn't want this deal to exist between them anymore. He wanted to try and have an actual relationship with her, not just meaningless sex. But it was clear that Rosalie didn't feel the same way.

"Hey, are you okay?" Rosalie asked, breaking his train of thought. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you almost look disappointed that I'm not pregnant," she said while eyeing him suspiciously.

"No, I guess I'm just really tired. It's been a long day," he brushed her off.

"Okay. Well, do you wanna go have dinner," she offered.

This was the first time after that night that Rosalie had shown interest in spending time with him. Dylan had wanted nothing more than that for days, but now he felt like his heart had been stabbed and he just wanted to be alone.

"Actually, I think I'm gonna turn in for the night," he said and left without another word.
