Pepa's time frame for getting the three Breeders out of The Cube shrank. She needed to wait until Venus was strong enough to escape but she couldn't wait until she was released back with the others. Pepa wrote orders in her file for a few extra days of isolated rest than what was necessary to give her more time. She was hoping to hear back from Peter before the days were over.
Venus had told Pepa that she didn't want to escape alone, she let her know there were two others she wanted to take with her. Pepa needed to find out the other two she wanted to come with her, even though she was sure she could guess who they were and figure out how to get them back to the medical room. But with Venus still passed out with exhaustion she couldn't talk with her at all.
Pepa's was to keep Venus in the Medical Room for a little more than a week. Peps wondered if she could pass off her friends coming to the room as a visit of concerned friends. It would need to be at night though. It was a bit of a stretch from the loading dock, across the parking lot, and into the woods. Even when they were in the woods the cover of darkness would help make it harder to track them down, but Pepa worked day shift usually. She would need an excuse to stay after hours.
As Pepa hashed out her plan Venus finally began to stir. With a grown, she sat up and looked around the room with a dazed and confused look on her face.
"What happened," Venus asked.
Pepa jumped up and rushed to her side, "You passed out in your bathroom."
Pepa quickly checked her vitals to make sure everything was still okay, "How are you feeling?"
"Fine, I guess," she replied.
"You were severely dehydrated and looked over exhausted. Have you been sleeping well?" Pepa asked.
Venus shook her head.
Pepa leaned in close to her and whispered, "Is it because of what you told me? About wanting to escape?"
Venus's eyes grew wide in surprise. She didn't expect the medic to ever mention it again. She seemed to afraid to even think about it, and Venus had given up hope on using her as a way out.
Pepa didn't wait for the answer to her question before continuing on, "I think I figured out a way to get you out of here."
She couldn't believe her ears, surely she didn't hear her right. A way to get us out? No, she just said you. Was the Medic not planning on taking her friends? If Mars and Cas didn't go then there was no point in leaving The Cube. She might be free but at what cost? The death of her friends? She would never be able to live without herself if that happened.
"I'm not going without Mars and Cassiopeia," Venus stated.
"I know, I'm still trying to work that part out but we are going to have to move within a few days. Do you think you'll be strong enough by then?" Pepa asked.
Relief washed over Venus knowing she wouldn't have to fight for her friends' freedom too. Venus nodded her head at Peppers question. Just knowing that her escape was becoming a reality already boosted her strength, "I could probably do go tonight."
Pepa shook her head, "I haven't heard back from Peter yet. We need someone from his camp to show us the way. I have no idea how to get there. Besides, there's no way you could make it today. You need more time to rest."
"When?" Venus earnestly asked. She didn't want to spend another second in that place.
"Soon," Pepa promised. "Now, I'm sure I don't actually hate to tell you this, but you can't say a word of this to anyone."
Venus nodded, "Not a word."
She knew if the wrong person caught wind of it all of their plans would be a complete loss. Not that it mattered. There wasn't a lot of people that came back to the medical rooms, and that was the beauty in their plan.
Venus knew her job right now was to stay rested and get stronger. Neither she nor Pepa knew how long or how far they would have to run before they were all safe. But the hope of her and her friend's upcoming freedom gave her strength. More strength than she had ever possessed in The Cube. Her will to live had revived.
Pepa had anxiously waited to hear something from Peter, but when the night faded into morning without even a tp on the door she began to worry that Peter had laid her letter to the side, and assumed it was one of her rambles again. She worried that the messenger hadn't relayed the importance of the letter and that there would be no one to meet them. Pepa knew this was their only window to get the three Breeders out and most likely wouldn't come across the opportunity again. Venus wouldn't most likely be in the Medical Rooms again until the babies were born and she wouldn't be in any shape physically or mentally to escape. It was absolutely now or never. Pepa worried about the letter she sent. Maybe, Peter had read it but maybe Pepa hadn't relayed the short time frame they were working in. Pepa and the three Breeders couldn't wait until the weekly visits from the messengers Peter sent. That was a week away and Venus would be back in the Breeders area again.
"It'll be fine," Pepa tried to encourage herself, "you'll hear from Peter tomorrow."
Pepa didn't want to show her worries to Venus. After she told her the plan of escape her face brightened. At her meals, she cleared her plate quickly. The Breeder was doing everything Pepa instructed her to so that she would get stronger. She didn't want to discourage her in any way.
They just had to hold out a little longer.
