Aaron

Tony was a really well-dressed fellow, but he also did not hold back in claiming that his occupation was far superior to mine. His nose was stuck so high up his ass that he couldn't see anything but his fat ego. He'd occasionally scowl at anything I said and that made me ready for the challenge. He'd been undermining my character for the last twenty minutes, sneaking little jabs in every direction. And I'd decided I'd had enough.

"Tony," I addressed him just as he was about to take another bite of the broccoli Violet had made. He glanced up at me, fork mid-way through the air, "when's the wedding, doc?"

"Aaron!" Violet hissed from across the table. She'd seen me there, watching her reject Tony's proposal. But she hadn't said a single thing to Tony when he'd undermined and berated me. I quirked a brow; I didn't realize we'd have to take sides tonight. And admittedly, I might be on the loosing one.

His face immediately turned a beet-red; it was kind of fun to rub salt on Tony's wound and watch him squirm.

Clearing his throat, Tony turned to look at me with a silent anger boasting throughout him, "there... uh... isn't." He looked at Violet and back at his plate.

Because of you. Once I figure out why the hell you keep messing with my girlfriend, I'm removing you from this god-forsaken planet. He thought, glaring at me like a rabid animal. I sighed, crossing my arms and leaning back against the chair.

"Yeah, I figured." I said, leaning back in my seat as Tony's mind flung a dozen angry thoughts and profanities my way, I could only smirk.

I had as much intention of befriending Violet's boyfriend as I did lighting myself on fire.

Stop! Violet sent my way, giving me a warning look.

Relax, he can handle it. I shot back, mimicking the look of Mufasa. It was payback time and my pride would stop at nothing until it was repaired.

"Why's that?" Tony fired back. It was like he wanted to have this fun little argument.

"Why's what?" I responded, taking a bite of Violet's food and wanting to laugh. She'd really worked hard on this meal because the Violet I knew couldn't put together bread and jam properly.

Aaron, calm down. Violet shot again and I decided to simmer down a little.

Only because you're cute. I responded and she gave me an open-mouthed, 'what-the-hell' sort of look.

"It's just... you know Violet. She's a great girl," I said, and though I tried so hard, the next words left my mouth involuntarily, "makes me wonder what the hell she's doing with someone like you."

"Aaron." Violet stood up this time, metal utensils clattering on the table as the tablecloth shifted and dropped forks and spoons to the floor noisily.

"What?" I asked, sitting up. Tony and I were glaring at each other and I was patiently waiting for him to act on his anger so I could fling him across the room.

Stop or leave. Violet glared at me now. I raised an eyebrow in her direction, so confused why she was defending him so hard when a couple minutes ago, she'd refused to open her mouth while Tony spluttered on about how being a doctor is so hard and that he'd much rather have an easy job, like being a detective. He'd continued on to say that he wouldn't have had to suffer through medical school or work as hard as he had. I took all of it, letting him say whatever bullshit he wanted about how unhappy he was in his career.

I hid my grimace as I stood up and picked her utensils up off the floor, "here, you dropped this." I said, feeling Tony's gaze all over me.

"So Aaron, you're a detective, right?" Tony asked, but we had established this long ago. It didn't make much sense why he was bringing it up again. Actually, it made a lot of sense considering he could pull insults out of thin air without ever thinking about what he was going to say first.

Low-life, what do you do? Falsify evidence to make yourself look good. Who let you work for them, they're probably dumb too. Tony's thoughts were growing angrier by the second and only managed to reach me at astounding speeds. The tension in the room rose exponentially and my focus was tunnel-visioned on the man sitting across from me. I wanted to drop-kick him to Timbuktu.

"Yep," I said, calming myself so Violet wouldn't regret inviting me. I'd constantly been monitoring my behavior tonight, it was unbearable watching Tony rip apart the yellow flowers I'd given Violet earlier. He'd said that he could turn them into a 'cool thing' and then he'd apologized (not having the smallest ounce of remorse) for destroying the flowers.

"So is that why you've been harassing my girlfriend lately?" The words left Tony's mouth, a small smile at the corner of his lips. I wondered if Violet had been telling him about me, what she'd said. Had she told him I was working a case that revolved around her safety? Violet had always been super secretive in her actions.

My eyebrows shot up, my vision immediately shifting to Violet who sat there with a look of utter annoyance.

Harassing? It was bold of him to use that word, especially knowing the extent of how Violet had been harassed and sexually assaulted in her past. Unless... he didn't know?

I shook my head, about to open my mouth at the same time as Violet spoke.

"Tony, Aaron. Look, I know you two don't know each other, but there's no reason to be idiots about it. Grow up. You're both here because I wanted you to meet each other because you'd be great resources to each other..." Violet started talking and I kept nodding along to every word she said. She was absolutely right. But she shouldn't expect me to befriend someone because she was friends with them.

"I don't see how this kid can help me." Tony said, unintentionally insulting Violet, who was my age, as he continued glaring at me. "Besides, Violet, you can't be serious. Whatever's happening in your life, you could've told me and I could've found you an actual detective. Not some grown man-child playing pretend."

I admit, while my walls run thick, that insult stung. I'd spent a vast majority of my life being called immature and working to overcome it. It was like a spark had ignited and I couldn't handle being attacked anymore. Not without fighting back.

I stood up this time, pointing a finger at Tony with humorless anger pulsating through my veins.

"Do you want to take this outside?" I spluttered out, fists clenched as his mental words kept entering my mind and igniting the very small fuse. I was afraid to explode at any second; afraid to show Violet this side of me. I wanted them to know I was great at my job, one of the best, but he didn't deserve an explanation.

"Relax, you're scaring the lady." Tony said, grabbing my clenched fist and placing it at my side. I simply crossed my arms and sat back down at the same time as Tony thought: sit down, asshole. I scowled.

I looked over in Violet's direction, but she had left her spot. I wondered if Tony even noticed that she'd vanished. Scowling at Tony, I stood up and placed my empty plate in the sink, turning the water on to start cleaning it.

Tony joined me in the kitchen a couple seconds later and the tension was too damn much. I dried my plate quickly and left immediately.

"Violet," I called, unable to find her. I walked into her room and saw her sitting on her bed. Upon closer inspection, I saw that she'd been crying. It hurt to see her like this, Violet rarely cried, not even when I'd crashed into a stop-light all those years ago and discovered I could move things like Matilda.

"Violet, I'm sorry. But if you heard what he kept thinking about me and you— you'd probably have acted the same way too." I sat down on the bed beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "He's repulsive, why the hell are you... I mean... look I'm not questioning your judgement, but that guy is questionable."

"No, Aaron, I wouldn't. I'd have at least faked being a decent person. Jeez you never change!" She said, her words were a punch to the gut and I staggered, moving off the bed. Confusion crept in, i hadn't realized she resented me.

"W...what?" I asked, feeling small all of the sudden.

"Aaron, I didn't mean it like that— I... I'm sorry." Violet immediately sat up, but what was done had been done. I stood up and cleared my throat.

"I'll... talk to you later." I said, Violet got out of bed just as I rushed down the hallway toward the exit. Today was a nightmare. I hadn't expected to be completely destroyed over one sentence from the girl I loved.

I jumped into my car just as Violet reached the edge of her balcony. I'd solve this case on my own— and maybe have Zya send some police to protect Violet's home. The way she acted tonight didn't sit right with me and it made me wonder if I'd been blinded by my own stupid feelings all these years. Had she always been so polarized in her beliefs and understanding. Had becoming a doctor change her somehow?

And her fucking choice in men was shit— Tony was a shitty person. She'd see that eventually and... I grabbed the steering wheel and revved out of the parking lot just as Tony stopped Violet from coming downstairs in the corner of my line of sight. He didn't deserve the space in my mind that I was giving him so I turned on the radio and let it drown out my thoughts.

God, I was frustrated.

Heyoooo!!!

How've you been? So much tension, I kind of wanted them to fight it out honestly.

Anyway, I'm working on the next chapter and it will be up by some-time next week!
