Chapter 7 (Back to Hayley's POV)

This can't be possible. What did I just do?

I leant against my closed door, breathing harshly. All my thoughts were in a turmoil. I couldn't take my words back now. I couldn't back out.

What do they want from me? I have nothing except my sister that matters to me. So why were they so obstinated with me? How did they even find me?

It didn't make any sense. Nothing made sense right now. What do I do? What would my father do if he were in my place?

He would stand up and face everything that life threw at him.

I had to make my father proud.

Gripping the door handle, I pushed myself off the ground and dusted my jeans. Get a grip Hayley, you know you're a fighter and that fighters don't succomb themselves to a bunch of highschool boys.

Wait...I have to fight right? I don't need to listen to them...

My lips turned up into a small but sly smile. In less than a minute, I had already formed a plan and it was genius. I ran up to my room where my sister was sleeping. I took out my school bag and threw everything I could see inside. I opened my wardrobe and pushed away a ragged cloth to uncover a small cash box where all my savings were kept and stuffed that too in my bag. Glancing one last time around the room, my eye caught a small object peeking under a dirty cloth. My fingers reached for it and brushed the dust off to reveal a grinning woman with wide blue eyes. One of her arms was linked with a tall muscular man with blue eyes too whereas her other arm was cradling a baby.

At their feet was a girl who looked about seven years old. She had jet black hair like the father and the eyes of the mother. The family looked so happy and united...so lively. I clenched my eyes shut and threw the picture in my bag without a second glance.

Finally, I turned to Mia and picked her limp body in my arms and walked to our bathroom. Climbing up the toilet seat, I released one hand to help me through the window. The cool night air surrounded me as I climbed down the ivy before leaping onto the ground. Sighing in relief, I was about to turn around when a voice pierced the night air.

"What are you doing?"

I slowly turned around to stare at a pair of midnight blue eyes. Blake looked...livid. I gulped and did my best to not back away or cringe at his look.

"I-I- I was running away," I managed to say while tightening my hold on Mia. Blake started trembling and fisting his hands.

"Alph- I mean Blake?" Chris suddenly appeared but stopped what he was going to say when he saw me...weird. Blake closed his eyes and opened them back again- wait, I swear his eyes were black a few seconds ago! I gave them a confused look but then shrugged it off. Must have been my imagination.

"What is Lun- Hayley doing here?" Chris quickly asked making me shoot him a suspicious glance.

"Running away," Blake said and in a second he was breathing fire. Definitely short-tempered.

Chris put his hand on his shoulder to try to calm him down and I took that moment to run. Sprinting down to my bike I was reaching out for the gear when suddenly my whole body was pulled back and crashed against a hard chest. Mia steered in my arms but thankfully didn't wake up.

I suddenly realized that I was in the arms of someone. Jolts as powerful as electricity zapped through me. I knew that I could get out of his grip...but something inside me refused to part away.

"Relax," he whispered in my ear making uncontrollable shivers run down through me. I involuntarily started to relax against him when he suddenly did something impossibly insane. He sniffed me. Gasping, I pushed my elbows into his chest, making him release me slightly. I broke free from his hold and whirled around to stare at him with a glare.

"What were you doing?" I snapped.

"I was holding you," he smirked. My jaw slightly dropped...he was teasing me! I felt my lips tug up but quickly brought it down. What the hell is happening to me!? Smiling because he was smirking? Letting him hold me? I'm going crazy!

"Whatever but don't do it again," I glared angrily. His whole teasing face fell and a flicker of hurt crossed his face before completely disappearing.

"I won't," He said; his tone cold making me visibly flinch. "Chris, take her to the car,"

Chris nodded and signaled me to follow him but I didn't see him. All I saw was Blake walking away and boy did I wish I had not said a word.

"Hayley?"

I snapped out of my trance and sheepishly followed Chris out of the woods and onto the muddy track.

"What about my bike?" I suddenly said, my voice clearly seeping worriness.

"Uh...one of the boys will take it don't worry," Chris smiled and I slightly relaxed. Mia was still fast asleep in my arms as we finally arrived on the main road.

I sighed when Chris stopped in front of a sleek black car and removed the keys. He opened the car door and gestured for me to enter. I layed Mia down on the seat and took out a small cover from my bag to lay it on her. I then closed the door and walked to the passenger side but stopped midway when I reached for the door. Am I sure to do this? Is this the right choice?

Noticing my hesitation, Chris pushed my hand down and stared at me.

"You're having doubts," He stated. I bit my lip and nodded.

"Look...don't enter the car till you're clear of your doubts," He shrugged. I stared at him in shock. Was he actually serious? But...Blake will yell at him? He's not gonna get in trouble?

"Nah I won't, Blake will understand," Chris chuckled.

"What- how-" I gasped.

"Your face showed what you were thinking," He sniggered and I went pink. I'm that transparent...

"Yup," he grinned. I couldn't help but start laughing. He soon joined me and for no reason at all, we were laughing really hard. All I had to do was look at his face and go back into fits of laughter.

That's until an angry voice resounded behind me.

"What are you two doing?"

Chris and I calmed down enough to look at the person behind us.

"Chill out Blake," Chris smiled cheekily but that only made steam come out of Blake's ears.

"Chill out? Are you fucking kidding me? I tell you to bring her to the car to drive her home but instead I find you laughing with her like it was the funniest thing ever?!" Blake growled and started shaking. I took a small step back, hoping that he wouldn't notice but it was too late.

His burning glare was riveted on me and I couldn't do anything about it except casting my gaze down on the ground.

"Blake stop looking at her like that-"

"Don't you even dare to talk! Just get her to the house!" Blake interrupted Chris and without another word, he whirled around and stalked off into the darkness of the trees.

I opened the car door and quietly slid into the seat, followed by Chris who started the engine.

"Sorry," I murmured.

"Nah, Blake's always been like that," Chris sent a small smile before driving out onto the road and bringing me to god knows where.

"Hayley, wake up-"

I jolted out of my sleep and instinctively threw a massive punch to the person.

"Fuck!" Chris yelled and hit his head against the car window.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" I gasped and pushed myself up to see how bad i had hit him.

"Shit, do you always have to aim for the nose?" He removed his hand and my mouth dropped in shock at the amount of blood coming out from his nose.

"Do you have a first aid kit?" I asked frantically.

"In the back," He groaned. I removed my seatbelt and climbed into the back seat, careful not to wake Mia up. I rummaged under the seats until my hand hit something cold. I pulled it out and handed the object to Chris.

"What the fuck?" Chris exclaimed. I took a look at the object in my hand and realized that I was holding a gun. My eyes bulged out of my head.

The memories of having held a gun came rushing to me and I let the gun clatter to my feet.

I riveted my horrified gaze onto Chris.

"Hayley-"

"What- what is this thing doing in your car?" I pointed to the gun. He opened and closed his mouth but didn't reply.

"What is this doing in your car?" I asked more harshly.

"It's just for protection," he averted his eyes from me and concentrated on the ground.

"For protection? What are you protecting yourself for?" I gave him a crazy look. Was he serious right now? He had to use a gun for protection?

"Just...just from things,"

"Things? What kind of things? Dogs?" I scoffed.

"Uh...you never know...Look, just forget about this-"

"-But-"

"Forget it," he said more firmly. I stared at him for a few seconds, trying to guess what was going on in his head but nothing came.

"Fine," I sighed.

"Good. Now, you can take the bags while I take Mia-"

"No, I will take her," I instantly replied. Nobody holds my sister.

"As you want," he shrugged and with that I cradled Mia in my arms while Chris took my stuff and locked the car. The building towards which we were walking to was very familiar. I looked to my left and saw a metal plate with a few words on it:

The Millers.
