Helping Mikayla

Landon and I return home from our long weekend at Hope Springs. The first thing I did when I got home was to book my first appointment with a psychologist. I have an appointment for first thing tomorrow morning.

I don't know if they can help me at all.  But, maybe talking about my feelings and life will help me open up to more people.

Landon walks over to me and places a bowl of popcorn and soda on the table. He looks at me. "So, you've got your first appointment with the psychologist tomorrow. What do you think about it?"

I shrug. I look around the room before I tell him. "I'm scared, Landon. What if I say something stupid in front of the psychologist?"

Landon shakes his head. "You won't say anything stupid. Just tell them about the way you grew up. Talking about what happened while living with those people will help you, Kay. I know you don't want to tell me. I hope someday you'll talk to me about what happened. I want to help you when things become too much for you." He drags his hand through his hair. "I don't want to see you break down like you did at the lake house. I couldn't do anything to help you."

I lie across him and place my hand on his cheek. "I'm sorry you felt helpless that day Landon."

My phone starts to vibrate and I rise from my seat. I slide my finger across the iPhone screen.

Me: Hello, this is Mikayla.

Voice: Hey, it's Amelia. We got you message. What do you need our help with?

Me: I had a daughter seven years ago and I never got to meet her as she was stolen from me after I gave birth to her.

Amelia: This is going to be a tricky case. Do you know where they would take a baby?

Me: I think the people I believed were my parents had something to do with this. I was told recently that they weren't dead. They are alive. Do you think they have my child?

Amelia: There's a possibility. Or they know where she is. Can you give me there names and I can search for them?

Me: Daniel and Mary Harrison.

Amelia: Thank you. I'll get Callie to have a look at this when she comes in. Have you decided if you're going to join LA's angels?

Me: I want to join the team.

Amelia: Great! We'll see you tomorrow at seven sharp?

Me: I have to be somewhere at ten. I'll meet you after?

Amelia: Alright, I'll message you the address. See you tomorrow.

I put my phone in my pocket and walk over to Landon. I lie across him and turn to the television.

He runs his fingers through my hair. "Who was that?"

I smile. "The girls that were here a couple days ago. They wanted to know if I wanted to join there group and I said 'yes.' I like to help other people."

He laughs. "Yeah, I noticed that. Are you going to have time to work for me?"

I shrug. "Do you really want me to work for you?"

He nods. "The office will be boring without seeing your pretty face and smile you give me when you see me. Your smile lights up your entire face and that makes me fall in love with you more than I already have."

He's so sweet.

I kiss his cheek. "Thanks, Landon. You sure know how to make me smile." I turn my attention to the TV and watch Fast and Furious 7. I watch the cars drive off the plane and the parachutes open.

Landon whispers. "That's a cool stunt."

I nod. "Yeah, it is. It's a miracle what a green room could do."

"There's a number of things I could do with you in a green room."

I punch his arm. "Stop."

I turn back to the TV. After fifteen minutes I close my eyes and let sleep take over.

The next morning I find myself in bed wrapped in Landon's arms. I move his arm off me and move to the side of the bed.

I enter the bathroom and do my business. I wash my hands and enter the bedroom.

Landon is sitting up and he looks at me. "Morning, Kay."

"Morning," I mumble.

I shuffle across the room and rub my eyes. I walk to the kitchen and start making breakfast. I turn the coffee pot on and flip over the pancakes.

Landon enters the kitchen and he pours himself a coffee. He looks at me. "Do you want one?"

I nod. "Please."

I put the pancakes on the table for Landon. He walks over to the table with the two cups of coffees and places them on the table.

I put the batter in the frying pan and cook my breakfast. I watch the batter bubble and then flip them over. "Do you have any maple syrup?"

"Under the stove. There's strawberries in the fridge can you cut some up and bring them to me please?"

"Sure," I look through the fruit bowl and find the strawberries. I rinse and cut them before taking them over to Landon.

Landon places the syrup on the pancakes first and then puts the strawberries on next. He cuts into the pancake and puts it in his mouth. He moans. "This is good. You should try some." He cuts into his pancake and places some into my mouth.

He's right it tastes good.

"That's good." I walk over to the frying pan and turn it off. I put my pancakes on a plate and move over to the table. I put maple syrup and strawberries on mine.

After breakfast Landon cooks the rest of the batter and puts the pancakes in the fridge. I clean the kitchen and put everything in their rightful place.

I head upstairs and get changed for the psychologist. I put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.

Landon looks at me. "I like this look then the business look you wear to the office."

I smile. "Good, does that mean if I still work for you I can wear whatever I want?"

He shakes his head. "I'm sorry. You need to wear business attire. You are a representative of Parker Inc."

I laugh. "I don't represent it only. I have a share in the company thanks to Grandmother."

Landon pulls on a pair of black slacks and a blue button up shirt. He ties the tie and looks at me. "How do I look?"

"Perfect! It should be a sin for you to wear something like this Landon Parker. You'll have all the girls panting for you."

He pulls me close to him. "You're the one that I want to pant after me. I can tell you already are. I can tell it's hard for you to keep denying me. I just wish the year would end. Then I can have you whenever I want."

I step away from him and grab my purse. "I'll see you tonight. I need to get to the Psychologist office for my appointment."

I exit the house and climb into the car.

I enter the Psychologist office and sign some paper work before I meet the person.

A woman enters the office and she looks at me. "Hi, Mikayla. I'm Ann and I'll be seeing you for now on. Follow me to my office."

She shows me to the office.

I walk down a corridor with six doors. Her room is at the end of the corridor and she opens the door for me.

I enter the room and sit on the lounge.

She pulls out a piece of paper and pen. "On the phone you said you had a break down. Do you want to start there?"

I shake my head. "I want to start with the moment I was kidnapped from my parents."

Ann's mouth hangs open.

I'm that girl.

Ann closes her mouth and shakes her head. "Okay, we can start there."

I lay down on the lounge and look at the ceiling. I don't want to look into the eyes of this stranger. I sigh. "My name is Mikayla Harrison. It's not my real name. It's the name my kidnappers gave me and it just grew on me," I play with my hands. "I don't remember being kidnapped. But, from what my parents told me it wasn't easy on them. What they don't know is when I was kidnapped I was tortured."

I have tears running down my face.

"I was five when I started to get slapped around by my father. When I went to school teachers questioned me and I told them I got into a fight with my sister. That was a lie. That afternoon I arrive home from school to find the police there talking to my parents. They interviewed me in front of my parents. They left after that. My parents watched the police leave and Dad brought out a strap and belt the shit out of me. I had problems walking for days."

I feel like all the weight is lifting off my shoulders.

I can't keep all this to myself anymore.

I start sobbing as a memory flashes into my mind.

I was six and Dad enters my room. "You are going to spend the weekend at your cousin's place while we go away."

Dad packs my stuff and he pulls me to the car. He pushes me inside and pulls onto the road. He speeds down the road and swerves through the traffic and runs the red traffic lights.

I watch as cars slam on the breaks.

One car narrowly misses us.

At my Uncle's house Dad throws me out of the car and kicks me in the stomach. He leans over me. "Be good with your Uncle. We'll be back with a sister for you." He jumps back in the car and speeds away.

I blink away the memory of when Dad told me he was getting me a sister.

Ann scribbles stuff onto the notepad and she looks at the time. "Time is up. I'll see you this time next week, Mikayla. Have a good week."

I shake her hand. "Thanks, Ann."

I exit the psychologist office and climb into my car.
