Beth took a deep breath as she turned onto the avenue of oaks that led to the main house. It had been five years since she had last been here. Five years since Wyatt Ramsey had kissed her and she had mixed feelings flooding through her. She wanted to see him, but she was afraid to because he might not recognize her. The romantic part of her had built their night together into something that it probably wasn't.  She knew that if she were being honest with herself, Wyatt probably hadn't thought twice about it, and if he had, it was most likely to remember it as an inconvenient way to spend the night.

Her car drew up to the River Moss Plantation ticket stand in the middle of the road.

"Hello there, ma'am, how can I help you?" an older man with white hair, a button-down shirt with the plantation logo, and a wide-brimmed hat asked.

"Hi, I'm here with the production crew," she said with a smile.

He nodded and then gave her directions, informing her that she only needed to follow the signs that pointed the crew in the right direction.

The summer heat was withering, and in the short time it had taken her to get directions, all of the cooled air had been sucked out of her car. Why Uncle Mason had to shoot this movie in the height of the South Carolina summer was beyond her.

It wasn't hard to find the crew site at the back of the property. There was another checkpoint to get through, and this time it was much harder to accomplish. Beth stopped her car and smiled at the man in a t-shirt and shorts. He had on dark glasses, a baseball cap pulled low, and he was wearing an earpiece. It was a far cry from the man who had greeted her at the gate moments earlier.

"Hi!" Beth smiled, undaunted by the man's unfriendly expression and crossed arms. "I'm part of the crew."

"Name," he demanded, pulling out his phone.

"Beth-"

"No Beth on the list."

"Sorry, it's probably my full name Elizabeth Ste-"

"No Elizabeth on the list either!" he said, pocketing his phone and crossing his arms. "You need to move your car."

Beth reached for her phone with an exasperated huff. It would be like Uncle Mason or someone on this staff to forget about her. It wasn't an uncommon occurrence. She sent Uncle Mason a text.

"You need to move your car now!" the man said, taking a step towards her.

"Just a minute," Beth insisted, tapping her finger on the steering wheel.

The man was about to open his mouth to tell her to leave once more when his phone buzzed. He took it out of his pocket and looked down at the message. "Sorry, ma'am. You're free to go through." He moved the cones and stepped aside.

"What's your name?" Beth asked.

"Gus, ma'am." He nodded.

Beth gave him a brilliant smile. "Thanks, Gus, and good job keeping out the riffraff!" She wrinkled her nose at him and smiled so he would know there were no hard feelings.

She was officially hot by the time she parked her car at the end of the lot and cut the engine. Taking a deep breath, she rolled her shoulders. She was used to her uncle and the rest of the family's good-natured teasing, but it tended to bleed over to others on the cast and crew, and she had to prepare herself for it mentally.

As she exited her car, she looked around the grass field. It was full of trailers and tents. It was a little traveling city that had all of the amenities necessary for the crew for the next month. Today Beth was wearing a cute sundress in light pink and pretty white sandals. Her blond hair was pulled back into a high ponytail and her glasses were perched firmly on her nose, hiding her freckles.

Beth started to wander, learning where everything was, looking at the names on the doors. It was like a ghost town, so she walked over to kraft services to get the scoop and some water.

"Hello," she greeted the young couple that was working it. "Where is everyone?"

"They're all down that road, filming on set," the woman explained, pointing her finger in the direction of a trail with trees so thick that it looked like a trap in a haunted move.

"Thank you," she said with a nod as she picked up bottled water and headed down the trail.

It didn't take her long to hear voices, and as she rounded the corner, she saw a clearing with an old shack constructed in the middle of it. Mason was pointing and yelling. Mave was rolling her eyes, her co-star, Brandon Kenneth, was listening intently, and there was a crew of on-lookers appearing to have heard it all before.

Not wanting to draw attention to herself, Beth moved towards the back of the group and stood next to an older couple. The man was handsome, with a shock of grey hair, a sharp nose, and a square chin. At second glance, the woman was much younger than Beth had thought. She was stunning with tastefully tinted blond hair that was cropped into a bell shape, and she was outrageously skinny.

The woman looked over at her and let her eyes skim her dress and shoes before she leaned over and whispered something in the man's ear. He then turned to look at Beth and frowned. "Excuse me," he addressed her. "Should you be here? Only cast and crew are allowed on set."

"I'm aware," Beth said with a forced smile. She was getting tired of people thinking she was a gate crasher.

The man looked over at the woman and shrugged.

Mason called for another take and stood out of the line of the cameras as he watched the action. Mave looked beautiful in her period costume, her red hair curled in 19th-century fashion. Brandon Kenneth was working hard, but his performance seemed forced as he did his best to focus on Mave and not on Mason's reaction. The actor had a long way to go, and Beth wondered why Uncle Mason had cast him.

When Mason still didn't get the results he wanted, he yelled for everyone to break for lunch.

Knowing Uncle Mason's fierce scowl was all for show, Beth rushed towards him, arms open.

"Beth!" he called, sweeping her up in a tight hug. "You are a sight for sore eyes." He stood back and brushed a stray hair from her face, giving her a tender look. "You remind me so much of my mother." He hugged her close again.

Elizabeth Stevens had passed a few years previous, and her husband a few years before her. It was a loss that was felt by the entire family.

"Beth!" Mave squealed, rushing towards her, arms wide in greeting. They hadn't seen each other in a few months, which for them felt like forever.

"Mave!" Beth greeted, hugging her sister tight before standing back and looking over her. "I like this look on you. It suits your primadonna attitude."

"Shut-up!" Mave said. "You look all sweaty."

Beth's lip twitched. "I am all sweaty. Uncle Mason forgot to put my name on the list again, and it was a challenge getting here."

Both sisters turned an accusing glance towards Mason.

"Sorry, love," he said with a grin, throwing his arm around Beth's shoulder. "Come and meet the Ramseys."

Mason led Beth over to the older couple. "This is Sheldon and Kaycee Ramsey. They own River Moss Plantation," he introduced. "Shell and Kay, this is my niece Beth Stevens. She is also our production historian and has come to make sure that every detail of filming is historically accurate."

Beth shook the couple's hands, knowing that this must be Wyatt's father and step-mother. "If you depend on me so much, why did you start filming without me?" Beth asked with a laugh. Mason's impatience was notorious, and it caused him more problems than not because he rushed in to start a project before he had adequately prepared for it.

"I know that this is a mid-19th-century period drama, but what is it about?" Beth asked. It was another case of Uncle Mason putting the cart before the horse. "Could I read the script?"

"You didn't get a script yet!" Mason said with shock. Then he pulled out his phone and sent a text. "You'll have one shortly. Shell was telling me that they have a family archive and that he would be willing to let you poke around in it." Mason smiled his charming smile.

Beth's heart sped up at the mention of the family archive. "I would like that," she said as calmly as she could.

"You can't hide that spark of excitement, Beth," Uncle Mason teased her. "Beth loves to spend time amongst historical documents."

"We'll be happy to let you inspect ours. I'm afraid the records are off-site, and you'll have to wait for my son Wyatt to arrive. He's the one that knows how they're organized."

Beth's heart rate increased at the sound of Wyatt's name and she couldn't help but wonder what her heart would do when she saw him again.

"Surely, you can take her, Shell? Wyatt is bringing Katherine with him, and he'll need to keep her entertained." Kay gave Beth a strained smile.

"Nonsense, the filming will entertain Katherine for a little while." He patted his wife's hand before turning his attention back towards Beth. "He'll be here this evening, and we can talk about it in the morning."

"Sounds great!" Mason agreed before anyone else could object. "Come on, Beth, let me get you a script," Mason said, pulling her down the road as Mave followed with a smug smile.

Beth shot her an accusing look, but she only grinned wider.

"What are you grinning about?" Beth hissed when Mason finally released her and continued walking.

"I'm picturing this Wyatt as a tall skinny man, with a balding head and thick glasses, a real academic. Just your type. Maybe that's why Mamma Hen is nervous." Mave laughed, totally amused by the situation.

Beth could tell her otherwise, but she had never told Mave about Wyatt or the kiss. It had always been her little secret. "I'm not sure what you mean?" Beth said with a shrug.

"It's obvious Mamma Hen wants Wyatt and this Katherine to have some alone time. I can smell a matchmaking attempt a mile away." Mave led the way to her trailer with Beth following behind.

Needing a moment, she told Mave she was going to get something to eat and then wandered off in the other direction. As soon as she was out of Mave's sightline, she leaned against a trailer at the back of the little compound. Her heart was racing, and she needed to get control. She was going to see Wyatt again, but would he recognize her? He had to be single. Otherwise, Mrs. Ramsey wouldn't be trying to set him up with someone. Is that what was going on? Beth hadn't ever thought of Wyatt as anything but single, but he could have been engaged or married when she had met him. It's not like she had asked him about it. Was this Katherine his girlfriend already?

She had to get it together, or she would be a blathering mess when she did finally meet him again.
