Chapter Fourty Two: Prove it

I scribble down any last words my brain can think of before the teacher announces;

"TIME'S UP KIDS!"

A series of loud cheers erupt from the rooms. Our finals were over. We'd all made it through high school!

As soon as I'm out the room, I run into my best friend's arms, nearly tackling her to the ground in the process.

"We did it!" Gigi squeals.

"I don't know about you guys but after that test I highly doubt I'm graduating." Carter sighs.

"Of course you will, Cart. We didn't spend hours studying for nothing."

"Yeah... 'studying'. That's one word for it."

"What does that even- wait what!" I manage to choke out. Gigi and Carter?!

"It's not like that!" Gigi defends.

"Dude why! You and Carter... I can't even. Just no ew." I look between my best friends, unable to fathom how this happened.

Carter waves his hands. "Hey, I'm right here!"

"Shut up Carter!" Gigi and I say in unison.

I drag her away into the girl's bathroom. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because it's nothing serious." She shrugs. "And let's be honest Dee, you're overly dramatic."

"Dramatic? ME?" I say in the most dramatic way possible. Huh, maybe she does have a point.

"We're just testing the waters to see if we even like each other like that."

"Do you?" I question.

"Maybe." She shrugs.

"You know... you guys aren't... that bad... I guess?" I mumble.

On hearing these words, Gigi's face lights up because she knows that means I'll support her, even if I have a weird way of showing it. I'm not really the mushy feelings type.

"This is amazing! We can go on double dates with you and Lan-" She stops on seeing my sour expression. "Sorry it slipped..."

"It's fine. I'll uh catch you later." I give her a small smile and rush off to the auditorium.

I'd be lying if I said he still doesn't affect me. I've been thinking about him everyday since he told me he loved me two weeks ago.

It didn't help that every day for the past two weeks he comes by my house. I watch his deflated expression from my window every time my Dad tells him I don't want to see him.

I hadn't told anyone about the Ryan situation or confronted him either. Whenever I see him all I can think about is how he hurt Landon. How he carries on with life so carefree knowing what he did to his best friend. My brother I once looked up to.

He knows something's off with how I've been avoiding him lately, but I haven't given him the opportunity to ask me, staying glued in the auditorium or on my piano at home. I'm pretty sure the 'Do not disturb' sign I put on my door is working.

I shut the auditorium door, being welcomed by the comforting silence, or so I thought.

"I thought I might find you here."

"Mason?" I look up to find my best friend seated on my piano bench.

I run up to him and into his arms, hugging him tightly. "You're back!"

He softly chuckles. "Woah someone's affectionate for once."

"Oh sorry I mean, ew why are you back?" I smile.

"There we go." He laughs, putting me down. "I came to see you."

"You came all the way from Paris to see me?"

"Ryan's worried about you."

I roll my eyes. "So you're here because Ryan told you?"

"Partially yes, but I did want to see you. What's going on?"

"Nothing's going on. I'm just stressed with the music show that's in three days." I say, opening the piano case. "Now if you'll excuse me I have to practice."

"No can do." He closes the case.

"Mason." I open it again.

"Heidi." He closes it again.

"Don't test me, I will hurt you." I threaten.

"Oh I know you will. But if it makes you feel better hit me all you want."

"God, you're so annoying." I huff, not bothering to open the case again.

He smiles in victory. "Care to fill me in on the Leidi drama as Gigi calls it?"

So I tell him.

I tell him everything from Christmas when I told Landon I loved him to the party when Landon told me he loved me. That part got an "I knew it" from Mason.

Then I told him about Ryan and how Landon used me, at first, to take revenge on him. To my surprise, Mason wasn't as shocked as I thought he would be.

He runs a hand over his face. "I had a bad feeling when Knight came back."

"You knew?" I question in disbelief. Of course he knew, Mason's always been Ryan's best friend.

"I was surprised that you didn't recognise Landon. Who knew you were that oblivious."

"Thanks Mace." I roll my eyes. "Carry on."

"Well I remember that day clearly. Ryan wasn't there for the game and Landon went looking for him in the locker room. You know how it all went after that. But I specifically remember Ryan telling me the night before about this stupid steroids idea, I didn't think he'd actually do it. I obviously knew Landon injuring himself and then moving schools because of 'private reasons' was bullshit when I saw Ryan's bruised face. So I confronted Ryan and he eventually spilled the truth."

"And you still chose to be friends with him?" I scoff.

He sighs. "I know he pulled the biggest dick move ever but we've been friends since we were 5, I couldn't just abandon him."

"He ruined Landon's life."

"He's your brother."

"Well Landon's my-" I stop. Landon's your what Heidi?

Mason gives me a sad smile and places a hand on my shoulder. "I'm not saying you have to forgive him, just talk to him."

I open the piano case, hoping he'd get the hint that I'm done with talking about Ryan. "I need to practice, Mace."

"Just think about what I said, Dee." He says before leaving.

I sigh in relief, getting ready to play. "Finally some peace and quiet."

I manage to play a total of three keys , before I hear the door of the auditorium open once again.

"Mace, I told you I need to practice. If you're here to talk about Ryan or Landon again I swear I'll-"

Mason doesn't respond.

That's because someone else does.

"You'll what, Gem?"

Bang. That's the sound of my face colliding with the piano keys.

Why is he here?! Breathe Heidi Breathe, one half of my brain says. It's hard to breathe when he's here, the other half counteracts.

"Are you okay..." I hear his footsteps coming closer.

Maybe if I pretend I'm dead, he'll leave.

"I know you can hear me."

Ignore.

"Hey?" He touches my shoulder. Bold move Zuko.

I get up, making sure to stand at least a meter apart, any closer and I wouldn't be able to think straight.

I cross my arms, giving him a blank stare.

"I came by your house..." He starts.

"I saw."

"How are you?"

"Fine."

He sighs at my curt responses. "Gem..."

"We're not doing this again, Landon."

"I need you to know that I meant what I said. I love you."

There it is. Those three words that have the power to break my already broken heart yet again.

"Prove it." I muster up the courage to keep my voice steady.

"Prove it?"

"Prove it." I throw my backpack over my shoulder, hopping off the stage.

"How am I meant to prove it!" He shouts from the stage.

I shrug, making my way out of the door. In all honesty, I didn't have an answer.

I'd just have to see how far Landon Knight was willing to go to prove it to me.
