Chapter Fourty Seven: She's Cheating On Me... With Jesus!

"This is an abomination." Gigi stares down at my suitcase in disgust.

"What's wrong with it!" I defend.

"Oh I don't know just the fact that it's full of food and no clothes!"

"He did it." I point at Carter.

He quickly points back at me. "She did it."

She shakes her head at the two of us. "You're going to New York, not a deserted island."

"What about the plane ride, hm? She'll need the food." Carter reasons.

"Exactly!" I high five him.

She turns to Landon. "Why are you dating her?"

"I'm seriously reconsidering it." He says whilst putting my suitcase in his car trunk.

"Hey!" I throw a piece of grass at him.

He dramatically falls to the floor. "Ah! I'm wounded!"

Dylan joins Carter and I on the grass. "Why are you dating him?"

"I'm seriously reconsidering it." I mimic, making Landon stick out his tongue in response.

"We have the cookies you wanted!" My dad and Ryan appear waving a bag of cookies.

"Oh thank fuck." I jump up and take the bag from him.

"Language!"

"Sorry!" I reopen my suitcase and throw the bag in.

Landon shakes his head at me and closes the suitcase and the car trunk. "You do realise they have cookies in New York?"

Dad puts an arm around our shoulders. "But they don't taste like home, do they?"

"See! Dad gets it."

"Thompson's." Gigi and Landon shake their heads in unison.

Dad turns to me. "I want you to call me as soon as you land, when you get to your dorm, before bed, when you wake up, before your first class-"

"Or why don't you just come to college with me instead?"

"Is that an option?"

"No!"

He holds his hands up in defence. "Sue me for missing my daughter!"

"You have a son too!" Ryan chimes.

I laugh and hug him. "I'm gonna miss you too Dad."

"It's just gonna be me and Ryan..."

"I feel so sorry for you." Landon interjects, making the three of us stare at him. "Kidding..."

"Promise me you'll take care of yourself." He kisses my forehead.

"I will do."

"Mr Thompson, if it makes you feel any better I'll be there to take care of your daughter." Dylan smiles.

"Actually that just makes me feel worse."

We all burst out in laughter.

Dylan's face drops. "Love you too, sir."

"Gem, your flight's in an hour we should get going."

"NO!" Carter grabs my leg.

"Carter!"

Gigi surprisingly follows Carter and grabs the other one.

"Gigi!"

Landon groans. "Oh my god. You guys are pathetic."

Dylan scoffs. "You're crying like a little bitch inside Lanny, don't deny it."

"Call me that one more time and I swear-"

I wiggle out of their grasps and grab Landon's arm, before he causes some serious damage to Dylan's face. "We should get going!"

"GROUP HUG!" Gigi exclaims whilst pulling Landon and I in for a hug.

Carter, Dylan and Ryan join. I don't miss the small groan Landon gives when Ryan joins.

At least they're not punching each other though. We're getting somewhere people!

"Carter you're cutting off my oxygen supply..." I wheeze.

"Dylan get your elbow out of my face!" Gigi huffs.

"Someone farted."

"I blame Carter."

"WHO'S TOUCHING MY BUTT?" Landon shouts.

"Right well that's enough of the group hug!" I announce as we all detangle ourselves from each other.

Landon makes his way to the drivers side whilst I take the passenger seat.

"Ready?" He asks.

I nod as he starts to drive.

"Wait!" I exclaim.

The car immediately stops.

"What!"

"Never mind."

"Are you serious?" He glares.

"Sorry sorry."

He starts to drive again.

"Wait!"

The car screeches to a halt.

"What!"

"What if I didn't pack enough food!"

"Gem?"

"What?"

"I'm this close to throwing you out the damn car."

***

I look up at the flight departures screen. "Colorado to New York."

Landon takes a deep breath. "You're actually leaving..."

"Smile." I pull the corners of his mouth upwards. "We'll FaceTime each other all the time."

He frowns again. "It's not the same."

"I know." My smile turns into a frown as the realisation that I'm leaving Landon finally kicks in.

"Can you believe we're finally together just to leave each other." He laughs slightly.

"Can you believe you haven't even asked me to be your girlfriend yet."

"I was working on it!"

I laugh, shaking my head at him.

He tucks a piece of hair behind my ear. "Stay."

I lean into his touch. "You know I can't."

"Come to LA with me." He pleads.

"New York's my dream."

"What about us?"

"What do you want me to do Landon?" I sigh.

"Be with me."

"You mean be with you in LA and watch you play a sport you don't even care about?"

He looks down. "It's not like that."

"You may have given up your dream of becoming a musician, but I haven't."

"FLIGHT FROM COLORADO TO NEW YORK IS LEAVING IN 10 MINUTES." The speakers blare.

"It doesn't have to end like this." I sigh not wanting to argue with Landon in our last few moments together.

"You're right. It doesn't."

He runs over to the closest desk. I quickly run after him. What is he up to?

He slaps his credit card onto the desk. "1 ticket to New York please."

"What are you doing!"

"Isn't it obvious? I'm coming with you, Gem." He smiles.

My mouth falls open in shock. "But UCLA..."

"I heard New York's a great place to start a music career." He shrugs.

"B-but what about the dream?"

"You are the dream." He smiles and places a kiss on my nose. "I think we both know basketball never was."

"Here's your ticket sir. Enjoy the flight."

He grabs his ticket of the lady at the front desk and takes my hand. I follow him to our flight gate.

Is this a dream or is Landon actually coming with me?

"I'm actually coming with you, Gem."

Was I thinking out loud again?

"Yes, yes you were."

I turn my attention to Landon who's smiling at me amusedly.

He's here. He's coming with me. He's coming to New York to be with me!

I throw my bag to the side and jump into his arms, not caring that there's a crowd of people probably watching us.

"I can't believe you're coming." I whisper, my face buried into the crook of his neck.

He strokes my hair and chuckles. "I told you I'm not good with long distance."

"Plus, you made me realise what a huge mistake I was making. Music is what I want to spend the rest of my life doing, not throwing a ball into a hoop."

I look up and smile at the love of my life. Is he even real?

"By the way you and Dylan are gonna have to let me crash in your dorms until I find a place."

I laugh. "Deal."

He's moving to New York for me, he can take my whole damn room if he wants. Heck, he can even have my suitcase full of food!

"PASSENGERS FLYING TO NEW YORK PLEASE START BOARDING THE FLIGHT."

"This is it." I mumble, whilst walking into the plane.

I've been dreaming of moving to New York my whole life and now that I am, it's terrifying.

Landon notices my hesitation and takes my hand. I intertwine my fingers with his and remember I'm not alone.

My freaking boyfriend not boyfriend guy I love is coming with me!

"I can't breathe." I announce as we sit in our seats.

"Please tell me you're joking."

I shake my head.

"Oh fuck. What do you need? Water? A bag? Gummy worms? A hug? The window open?"

He tries to open the window. "Why won't it fucking open!"

"It's a plane, they never open!"

"Since when!"

"Since forever!"

He slumps back in his seat. "Oh my god, we're going to die..."

Wait.

I turn to Landon. "Are you scared of flying?"

He quickly sits up. "No!"

"Yes you are!"

"No!"

"Aww my little baby." I coo, pinching his cheek.

"This is so not happening." He swats my hand away.

"There's nothing to be afraid of. Look we're already flying." I point towards the window.

He looks out of the window. "We are? When? How? I didn't even notice."

"We were too busy arguing over you being scared." I laugh.

"Oh yeah. That was my plan to distract YOU from being scared."

"Sureeee."

He rolls his eyes.

I rest my head on his shoulder. Might as well get some sleep.

"Gem?"

"Hm?"

"Would now be a good time to ask you to be my girlfriend?"

The question makes me sit up immediately. I stare at Landon whose eyes are shut, looking like he didn't just drop the girlfriend bombshell on me.

He opens one eye. "What?"

"No chocolates or flowers?"

"I'm moving states for you Gem, give a guy some credit!"

"Jesus Christ, I love you."

"Jesus?" Both eyes shoot open as he sits up. "Heidi Thompson, are you cheating on me?"

"With the Lord Jesus, yes."

"SHES CHEATING ON ME EVERYONE! I REPEAT SHE IS CHEATING ON ME! GET ME OFF THIS PLANE!" He shouts.

I quickly cover his mouth with my hand. "You're so embarrassing!"

He moves my hand to speak. "You never answered my question."

"I told you, I only love Jesus."

"SHES CHEATING ON ME... WITH JESUS! REMOVE HER FROM THE PLANE-"

"Landon!" I place both hands on his mouth. "I'll be your girlfriend! Just stop that!"

He smiles.

I groan and drop my hands. "My boyfriend's a literal child."

"My boyfriend... I like the sound of that."

"Really?"

"Really." He leans forward and captures my mouth in his for what feels like an eternity.

Soon we'll be 2000 miles away from home. The fact scares the hell out of me.

Who knows what New York and the future has in store for us.

But I sure as hell can't wait to find out.
