Chapter Twenty: "I Rate It."

"SYDNEY!" WESLEY YELLED at me Sunday night.

I flinched and stared at him through the screen of my laptop, almost dropping my iPod in my hand. "What?"

"You're not even paying attention to my story. Who are you texting?"

"Someone." I murmured, my fingers practically dancing across the screen quickly.

"Wait is it who I think it is?" Wesley asked and I looked at him to find him staring at me with wide eyes.

I shrugged and he looked to be getting extremely excited. "Holy shit! It's Lucas isn't it?"

I shrugged again, eyeing the three dots showing on the screen. "Wow, now you're texting. Step One is completed."

"There are no steps to this you idiot."I told him, grabbing my phone to answer once Lucas' message popped up.

"There are always steps to a plan."

"I never had a plan in the first place." I told him before eying what he was wearing as he got up, placing his laptop probably on his desk so I could fully see what he was wearing as he backed away. "Are you going somewhere on a Sunday night?"

"Yeah last minute party at some apartment downtown. Apparently it's supposed to be lit. I'm waiting for Michelle and everyone else."

"You look nice."

"Thank you," Wesley grinned, running his hand through his hair a couple of times. "It took me like a half an hour to find this shirt and jacket."

"I figured. How'd you find out about the party?"

"There's this guy I follow on Instagram who goes to that school down the block from where we go-well were you used to go and he kept spamming my entire feed about the damn party and I needed to get out the house anyway."

"I know how you feel." I muttered about wanting to get out of the house.

I've never actually been to a real house party or anything like that. Sure, I've been to a party but majority were like a birthday party and most of them were in fancy banquet halls that my friends had worked hard to afford or begged their parents. I didn't really think I would fit in the whole scene of a party anyway.

"What are you guys talking about that has your eyes glued to your iPod like that."

"You know...just stuff." I told Wesley.

"What kind of stuff?" Wesley asked, grabbing a chair and sitting down in front of his laptop, giving me an annoyed look.

"I mean right now he told me he was working on a new painting."

"Wow he's sharing his artistic mind with you...its getting deep." Just then Wesley's phone beeped. He picked it up before, pocketing it. "I got to go Sydney, Michelle's downstairs."

"What's going on with you two?" I had to ask him.

"Nothing," Wesley admitted with truth in his face. "She didn't tell you? She's kind of dating this guy that goes to a school up north and she sees him like every weekend."

"Wow."

"Yeah. I'll talk to you later or tomorrow. Tell your lover boy I say hi." Wesley grinned and before I had the chance to say something, he logged off. I closed my laptop and pulled out a chair, looking out the window as the moon was out and in my vision.

I heard the small noise from my iPod as it signaled me another message came in.

Turtle:

Can I call?

My eyes widened and I almost dropped my iPod in my hand before I replayed and almost ran over to my desk to grab my phone before walking slowly to the chair and sitting down.

Just then my phone started buzzing and out of idiocy, I hit the answer button so fast I'm pretty sure it barely got through to the first ring.

I'm an idiot.

Should've picked up on the third.

"Hey." Lucas said from the speaker.

"Hi." I said cautiously. I heard the rustle of something in the background and not even a second after, I heard the sound of a car honk. "Where are you?"

"Outside," He answered. "Taking a walk."

"Why?"

"Because."

"That's not a good enough answer Turtle."

"It's good enough for me." he dragged out the last word and I rolled my eyes at his antics.

"Okay then why'd you call me?"

"Why? I couldn't? Because last time I checked I asked and you said yes."

"Yes and now I want to know why?"

"Why not?"

"You," I held in my small annoyance I had for the guy. "You're so annoying."

"I'm sorry." He laughed a little.

"No you're not."

"Yeah I'm really not."

"Are you going to Devin's?"

"Nah he's with his cousins today, I'm not going to intrude unless he calls me or something. What were you just doing?"

"I was talking to Wesley."

"You're best friend, right?"

"Yeah he went to some party."

"Is he one of those people? That goes to a party every weekend or something?"

"No, it's like once in a while. Or he'd rather go swimming."

"Ah a swimmer then."

"Yeah a swimmer."

"You at home?" he asked me.

"Yeah."

"I would ask you to meet me at the park but I don't know if your mum would let you out of the house."

"She wouldn't." I confirmed for him.

"Well that sucks. I could've used some company. I have you on the phone though so that's good for now."

"For now?"

"Yeah, definitely until the day I go for a walk and you're able to physically join me for the walk."

"Yeah I'm not sure if that'll happen soon."

"In due time."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You're kidding right?" I asked Mary Anne.
"Nope." She and Octavia said at the same time.
"So just to confirm: you and Eduardo were in your room literally just talking when your mom came in and threw a box of condoms at you guys."
Mary Anne nodded and looked like she wanted to turn away in shame.
"So she thinks you guys are having sex or are going to?"
"They've already done it." Octavia blurted out.
Mary Anne sighed as I turned my gaze to her to confirm and she even nodded. "It was during the summer."
"Well you've been together for four years some of us kind of expected it to happen before you got married." Octavia admitted.
"Yeah but I just want to know what the hell my mom was thinking."
"I think she's just looking out for you." I told my friend, grabbing my book and putting it in my bag.
I had shoved my dance bag in my locker when I felt another presence walk up to me.
Lucas was so close I could already smell his cologne. "Hey."
"Hi."
I slung my backpack over my shoulders and I finally faced him, giving him a smile that mirrored the one he already had on his face. I heard someone clear their throat behind us and I turned around quickly to remember that Octavia and Mary Anne were behind us.
"Hi Lucas." They both greeted him at the same time, sharing these weird, knowing smiles on their faces.
"Hey." He said to the both of them before pulling something out from behind him. he had a coffee cup to me. "I figured you would want this since I kind of kept you up last night."
"Doing what?" Octavia's eyes widened.
"Talking." I told her before she had any ideas in that mind of her. I could already tell what she had been thinking. I took the drink from Lucas. "Thank you."
"No problem."
"Hey guys." I heard Eduardo say down the hall with Zen. He gave Lucas a nod before turning to me quickly with a stupid smile on his face.
"You know Eduardo and Zen." I told Lucas who nodded to acknowledge them. For the first time Lucas looked so awkward and out of place. I almost reached out to grab his hand as he took off his glasses and hung them off his shirt like sunglasses.
"Mary Anne, is it true your mom gave Eduardo a box of condoms?"
Mary Anne turned to Eduardo. "You told him?"
"Babe, you were going to tell Sydney, Octavia and Kim anyway. I only told Zen."
"What did you do with the box?" Octavia suddenly asked.
"They're in my room." Eduardo said.
"You guys already opened it didn't you?" Zen asked with a look that made me know he already knew the answer.
Eduardo opened his mouth to answer when Mary Anne slapped a hand over his mouth. "Don't you dare answer that, Sanchez."
I turned to Lucas who seemed a little less awkward and now just looked amused. He leaned close to me and whispered in my ear. "You're friends are funny."
"Haven't gone to school with them for like three years already?"
"Yeah but I didn't really get to fully engage in conversations with people to figure if they were amusing to me or not."
"Then what's Sydney?" Eduardo asked, eavesdropping on our conversation. "Is she amusing or not?"
Lucas looked down at me. "You're pretty amusing to me."
"I'm glad you find me funny, says the one who snorts." I rolled my eyes at him with a smile.
Lucas' jaw dropped. "Wow I thought we weren't going to talk about that."
"It's your fault."
"You're the one who sucks badly at Wii tennis."
"And I thought we were never going to talk about that again." I narrowed my eyes at him and he reached his arms out towards me.
"Come on Sydney."
I moved his arms away from me and resisted stepping into them. "No, get away from me."
He threw an arm around me and I didn't bother to shrug him off as I closed my locker. I could feel my heart beat pick up the pace. "I rate it." I heard Eduardo whisper to Octavia.
"I'll see you in class Sydney," Mary Anne said. "We're going to...uh, find Kim."
"Yeah Kim." Octavia said, grabbing Zen by the arm and Eduardo with the other. "See you at lunch!"
My friends walked away and left me with Lucas who took his glasses off of his shirt and put them back on his face. I stared at them as they walked away. "Well that was unexpected." I mumbled.
"Yeah." Lucas agreed before taking his arm off of me and poking me in the side.
I slapped his hand away. "You're an idiot."
"No I'm not." He grinned.
"I beg to differ."
"Come on let's get you to class." He said to me and we walked down the hall. I looked to the side and noticed Lydia and Joey were there beside an orange locker, making the people around them uncomfortable.
It wasn't like they were kissing or anything. It was more like they were having a very heated argument that may have been told in low voices but clearly gave off some kind of tension.
"Um..."
"Yeah that's regular." Lucas told me. "You'll see that a lot."
"They're a complicated couple."
"You could say that." He said when Lydia caught my eye. She immediately stopped her rant towards Joey and narrowed her green eyes at me. She turned around and walked off.
"What was that look she just gave you?"
"What look?" I played dumb, walking ahead of him.
"Hey, hey," He grabbed the crook of my elbow, gently pulling me back and facing him. I didn't realize how close we were until I almost hit his chest and I tilt my head up to look at him. "Why did Lydia just give you a look? Like a dirty look?"
I shrugged. "She doesn't particularly like me. Neither does Matilda."
"Lydia and Matilda," he repeated. "Sydney, that is one of the worst combinations of people to dislike you in this school. Matilda is and I'm not even going to lie, she can be a bitch and so can Lydia. But why in the world would they dislike you of all people?"
"Lydia doesn't like me because I decided to defend my friend in a great way called sarcasm. Matilda doesn't like me because she thinks I'm trying to steal Isaac from her."
"But you aren't right?"
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Lucas no! He's basically tried asking me out on a date so many times and I've rejected him. I don't like him and I am absolutely positive I will never like him especially if he keeps annoying me with his advances."
Lucas didn't say anything for a while but I took deep breaths as I stopped talking, getting a little riled up. "Sydney, if Matilda or Lydia do something to you- tell me. Okay? Tell me. Because if Lydia does something to you or Matilda tells Lydia to do something to you and you anger her, that will lead to Joey bothering you and if Joey bothers you tell me that. Specifically if Joey says anything to you tell me."
"Lucas you don't-"
"I'm not even kidding Sydney," he bent his head down to get face to face with me. "Promise you'll tell me, okay?"
"Okay." I promised him.
He sighed with relief. "Good. You okay?"
"Yeah I'm good."
With that Lucas looked even more relieved and wrapped his arms around me. My mind was rolling over the thing Joey had told me so I didn't hug him back, which Lucas noticed. "You know Canada girl, the polite thing to do when a guy hugs you is to hug back."
"Sorry just thinking." I told him, returning his hug in the middle of the entire hallway.
I let go first or else I probably wouldn't have let go and that would look weird to everyone. We said our goodbyes before I entered Mr. Stiles' class to find Mary Anne already sitting down at her seat, giving me a knowing grin.
"What?" I asked her, taking my seat beside her.
"So what was that? Hugging? Late night talks? How long did you guys talk for last night anyway?"
"Um...until one but only because I started getting tired."
Mary Anne's eyes widened. "Is it sad I only expected you guys to talk for like an hour but how long a conversation is that?"
"About four to five hours."
"Oh God he really does like you."
"No he doesn't." I told her.
Mary Anne completely twisted in her chair to face me. "No, Sydney you have to see it from my perspective. Last time I checked, he doesn't just talk to random people and joke with them like that. He doesn't just hug a girl he met about a month ago. He doesn't just walk other girls to class. I honestly doubt he has long conversations with other girls either. And lastly, he doesn't defend other girls if they're being bothered by bitch 1 and bitch 2. Lucas doesn't do that. So either he drastically changed over the summer and is suddenly opening up which I doubt happened or let me say this again: HE'S INTERESTED IN YOU."
I didn't know how to respond to her sudden rant and I leaned back, having the most awkward smile on my face as I actually took what she said into consideration. "Wait, were you eavesdropping on our conversation in the hallway?"
"I had to," She said with a flip of her black hair. "But honestly, I don't know if you're going to go ahead and tell the guy how you feel or if he's going to grow a pair and ask you out already."
I bit my lip and took my backpack off of my shoulders, taking a sip of the coffee Lucas had given me. "You realize I kind of have this thing called fear if I tell him how I feel."
"Come on Sydney he's not going to reject you. I know that, you should know that too."
"I don't want anything to change."
"No you do want something to change; you just want it to change for the better. And it will. Plus I saw that beanie he gave you the other day."
My eyes widened. "I didn't tell anyone about that."
"I saw it peeking out of your bag. I knew it was his." That same beanie was in a drawer in my closet.
"He said that because I liked it and he just gave it to me."
"See he's going through a beanie phase. He just gave you a beanie. If that doesn't say he likes you, I don't know what the hell will."
