Chapter Fifteen: "I Like Pickles."

MY FINGERS TAPPED over the screen of my iPod Touch, rapidly messaging Wesley as my friends had started sitting at our table. Mary Anne almost did a double take at me. "Someone looks happy."

"Sucks you couldn't come with us on Saturday night Sid." Eduardo mentioned and I huffed, locking my iPod.

"Yeah." I mumbled. They had invited me skating after the showcase but even without asking I already knew I wouldn't be able to go.

"You ready for today though?" He asked me "And for our weekends to be filled with practices?"

"Practices?" Octavia asked.

"Regionals is in over a month. November." I told her.

"Our team is going to be stressed, drama filled and if we lose Regionals I may as well just quit dancing all together." Eduardo huffed.

"What? No. Regionals will be fine."

"Yeah considering you're getting a solo."

"Huh?" My jaw dropped in disbelief and I shook my head frantically. "No, no, no I will not be getting a solo."

"Why not? I mean you're the best on our team. I'm still wondering why you didn't have a solo in the showcase."

"Because I really didn't want one and it would be better if someone else got the female solo like Hailey or Winifred or Rita-"

"Or Matilda." Eduardo said dryly. "But she never wants the regional place. She will forever be trying to get the World Championship or at least the National solo because of all the important people that will be there. You would know that."

I did know that. "Yeah I understand that but Mrs. Yousiff can give it to any of the other girls. I don't really want it."

Zen joined us at the table, his uniform looking like he didn't really care to put it on. His blazer on tied around his waist, his golf shirt unbuttoned and he looked like he didn't get much sleep. "Whoa what's up with you?" Octavia asked.

Zen glared at her as he sat down, running his tongue over his lip ring. "I pulled an all-nighter trying to fix a technical problem from my computer to the school computer. Basically what I did was-"

"No, no, no it's too early to hear you geek talk." Octavia muttered.

"Just because I'm a hacker and I'm practically the head of the Tech Crew and AV clubs here does not mean that I am a geek."

"Yes. You are not just a geek. You're a nerd."

A corner of Zen's lips twitched into a smirk. "Don't be surprised when you lose half of your followers tonight."

Octavia's nostrils flared as she looked at Zen in disbelief. "You wouldn't dare."

"Try me." Zen scoffed, leaning back and crossing his arms.

Mary Anne cleared her throat. "Followers aside-Sydney how's lover boy?"

"Lover boy?" I asked her.

"Which one?" Octavia asked.

"Cahill," Sarah sat down at our table on the other side of Zen. "Isaac is over and done with considering what happened this weekend."

Everyone murmured in agreement and I sat down there in confusion as the screen of my iPod lit up from another message from Wesley. "What happened?"

Octavia stared at me than she had a look of realization on her face. "Shit I forgot you don't have any social media. Even though it was all over Snapchat."

"And a video was on Instagram."

"And Twitter."

"And FaceBook."

"I don't have any of that. Now what happened?'

Sarah put down her Samsung, "Isaac kind of got busy with a girl at a park. Unfortunately Matilda came in at the right time which led to a full out argument between the two of them in public and many people from our school and other schools have this video going on considering there was an abundant amount of people at the park yesterday."

"Okay..." I turned to Mary Anne. "I was talking to you last night. How did this not come up in our conversation?" I didn't really accuse her of anything considering I gave her a smile. Even when my mom yelled at me to go to bed Mary Anne and I literally stayed up talking about everything.

"Excuse me for giving you all the details I kept thinking of over Teen Wolf."

"So that's why you weren't answering my texts," Eduardo muttered. "Because of your fantasy of werewolves."

"And One Tree Hill and The 100." Mary Anne added in, turning to me again. "You still have to watch the seasons from the start."

I laughed. "I will. I have nothing better to do in my life anyway."

"But when you watch both of those shows," Octavia expression changed into complete and utter fan-girl mode. "You will love it. And my name too. Also you should watch Finding Carter and-"

"Stop! Please!" Zen demanded. "Next thing you know you're all going to start talking about Grey's Anatomy."

Just then Sarah, Mary Anne and Octavia eyes widened but Zen made a rough sound at the back of his throat and put his hand up to yield them. "Stop. Not today Satan. We will not be talking about this today. I forbid it."

Eduardo shrugged. "The show is actually okay if you're wondering."

Zen glared at the only other guy at the table. "You're a betrayer."

Kim walked over to our table, her wavy hair in a braid that led to a bun and she sat between Zen and Eduardo. "So...what are we talking about?"

"Where have you been?" Sarah asked, getting back on her phone.

"I talked to a teacher about getting my grades higher."

"We've only been in school for like a month." Eduardo mentioned not really believing her. I didn't believe her either. I looked closely at her face to see the pink tint on her cheeks, her lips were kind of swollen and she had looked like she had been trying to catch her breath for the past couple of minutes.

"But still it never hurts to try and get a great average."

I looked down to find Mary Anne going through my iPod and she gave me a quizzical look. "What happened to your phone?"

"My mom checks my phone but she doesn't check that."

Mary Anne looked confused. "Then why don't you just message lover boy from here. Doesn't he have an iPhone?"

"Who's lover boy?" Kim asked.

"Lucas." Eduardo answered.

"He's not lover boy," I stated, getting annoyed by the nickname.

Mary Anne looked through my iPod again. "He seems like lover boy or at least 'Turtle boy' considering the emoji you gave him. Just talk to him."

"No."

But Mary Anne was already typing and my eyes widened as I tried to get my iPod back from her. "Hi Lucas."

"Oh my God, no give it back." She got up and started to walk away but I quickly got out of my seat and tried grabbing the device from her hands. I could hear Eduardo laughing from a distance along with Mary Anne who grinned, showing her straight teeth.

"He replied 'Who is this?'"

"Give it." I almost leaped on her and she laughed loudly. I grabbed her arm, half joking as she continued tapping on my screen.

"It's...what did he call you again? Canada girl?"

"Oh my God no, stop!"

Someone grabbed me by the waist and I looked down at Eduardo who lifted me up, away from his girlfriend. "Say 'I like pickles'."

I could hear the rest of our friends laughing as Octavia joined Mary Anne in messaging Lucas. I slapped Eduardo's arms around me. "Let me go!"

Eduardo dropped me only to fall to the grass part of the quad, laughing his ass off. I snatched my iPod out of their hands.

Me:

Hi Lucas

Turtle:

Who is this?

Me:

I like pickles.

Turtle:

What?

Me:

And bananas.

I glanced up and glared at Octavia and Mary Anne who gave me sheepish smiles. "I like bananas? Really?"

That got everyone to burst out laughing and I rolled my eyes. I swear no matter where I move or live, the friend I make will have a certain sense of immaturity. I felt my stomach twist when another notification popped up.

Turtle:

Canada girl I know this is you.

My eyes widened. "Guys he knows."

Eduardo snorted, getting off of the ground. "He's right over there. Of course he knows."

I slowly turned to where Eduardo was pointing at near a window that looked into the hallway and locker and I could see Lucas standing there looking directly at me with his phone in his hand. There was a slight smile on his face. One that said I figured you out and I for one thing I definitely didn't mind.

Mary Anne stood beside me, glancing over at Lucas. She gave me a slight push. "Go."

I gave her another glare that was fake this time before walking over to the doors that connected to the hallway where Lucas was. The second I closed the doors from the quad, I saw two students playing on violins in the side.

Honestly, this school could not possibly get more creative, I told myself as my eyes looked over the lockers that had a gold and white design on them.

I walked up to him carefully, trying not to trip over my feet and face plant. I could imagine how many ways I could possibly embarrass myself in front of him and trust me when I say that there is a lot.

He didn't say anything as I stopped about three feet away from him. "So...t-that wasn't. I-It wasn't-fuck," I whispered to myself, fully knowing he could hear me curse. I cleared my throat. "I didn't send that-that message...I mean-"

Lucas held a hand up, that slight smile on his face fully blown into one of amusement. "I know. I could see Mary Anne typing on it when I was walking by."

I let out a breath filled with relief. The music from the violin players didn't seem to decrease but it also calmed me down. "Thank God."

Lucas grinned, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet. "So...you really don't like bananas?"

My jaw dropped and I hit him on the shoulder without thinking. "Seriously?"

He started laughing. Did he have to sound so perfect? "I'm sorry I just had to ask. I mean like the actual fruit though not whatever you are possibly thinking right now."

I rolled my eyes. "I'm not a big fan of the fruit banana. It's just really mushy."

"But it provides you potassium." Lucas pointed out like a fact book.

"I can figure out another way to get potassium."

He raised an eyebrow. "How?"

My eyes flickered around the hallway as a couple of the younger students past by us. I groaned, knowing he was just kidding with me. "I don't know but I'll figure it out."

"Hmmm," He narrowed his eyes at me, his heart shaped lips rolling into his mouth for a second. "What about pickles?"

"I swear you're purposely making this conversation dirty."

He laughed again and I smiled at that. "I'm not. I really want to know."

"Pickles? Not in a jar because that taste weird but in a burger or something."

He nodded, before slowly taking the iPod out of my hand and looking at the messages himself. "Turtle? I see you put the contact name there and the emoji. This friendship has been standardized."

"It has." Although I didn't want the friendship reproach, I would take what I could get with Lucas Franklin Cahill.

"So you don't like bananas but you like pickles that are not from jars and you're a dancer."

"I'm a ballet and contemporary dancer." I added in.

"Ballet? So you wear tutus and-"

I scoffed, knowing he was joking but I was pretty glad I wasn't as tongue twisted as I was when I first met him. "It's not like I'm a ballerina that twirls and spreads butterflies and rainbows around the place."

Lucas nodded, that grin not looking like it would ever leave his face. Fuck I didn't want it to leave his face. His smile was too good to be true. "I know you aren't. I saw that when you danced twice in front of me. You're more than you think you truly are."

"What?" I wasn't sure if I heard him right.

"You're more than you think you truly are," He repeated, his grin dismissing himself into a small smile. He grabbed my hand and placed my iPod in it. "I'll see you in class and I'll message you about bananas, pickles and dancing if you want."

"I-I would prefer if we didn't talk about bananas and pickles."

Lucas let out a short breath that went along with his smile as he shook his head. "Suit yourself Sydney." He let go of my hand and turned around to walk down the hallway.

I let out a breath I didn't know I had been holding as my iPod almost fell out of my hand. I quickly pushed past the door back outside to where my friends were sitting back at the table. I walked over to them and didn't say a word at the look on Mary Anne's face.

"So..."

"So what?" I played dumb.

"Isn't it obvious Mary Anne? They were planning on whoever is going to sext each other first."

"What?" I stared at Eduardo, my jaw dropping.

He shrugged. "That could have happened."

"But it didn't."

"But it could have."

"But it didn't."

"But it could-"

"IT DIDN'T!" Mary Anne, Octavia, Sarah, Kim and I yelled at the same time at Eduardo.

The tips of his ears turned pick and he put his hands up in surrender. "Okay it didn't happen. Calm your ovaries," Then he looked down at my iPod where the screen lit up from another notification. "Wait but if that didn't happen than why the hell did he say pickle...SIDD-"

Octavia reached over and slapped the back of Eduardo's head. "Shut. Up. You are giving me a headache by talking."

Eduardo glared at Octavia for a couple of seconds before glancing at Zen. "No wonder you call her a bitch 24/7."

Octavia returned Eduardo's glare before looking at Mary Anne. "How have you been with him since the ninth grade?"

Eduardo opened his mouth to snap at her but he held himself back, nodding slowly. "You know what? I was going to say something about you and your ex Jack but I'm going to be the better person and hold myself back."

Octavia scowled at him and Sarah looked at her with a confused expression. "Um, O? What happened with you and Jack on Saturday?"

Octavia stilled and her eyes flickered over to Mary Anne whose jaw dropped with realization. "I knew it!"

Octavia groaned and Kim stood up staring at her with disbelief. "You got back together with him?"

I tried to listen to the conversation as my iPod's screen lit up again with another message from Lucas. "Bananas?" Eduardo raised his eyebrows, looking over at me. "You really are sexting Lucas Cahill, aren't you?"

I was about to deny it when Octavia abruptly stood up. "We're not really back together."

"Uh-oh." Zen mumbled, glancing up at her under his eyelashes. Even with the red and navy blue uniform on, he managed to make everything about him dark.

"Not uh-oh. No uh-oh. We just had a talk."

"Define talk." Kim said.

"Let me guess? You got busy." Zen muttered, pulling out his earphones and I immediately heard screamo music blasting from it.

We waited for Octavia to deny it but she didn't. Instead she looked down at her nails and had a guilty look on her face. I wonder why. " Um...define busy."

"Seriously?" Sarah questioned.

"It's not like we really did anything. I mean we did something but not that thing-"

"LA LA LA LA LA LA I don't want to hear this. Can we change the subject?" Eduardo groaned, hitting his head on the lunch table over and over again until I'm pretty sure it hurt.

"No," Mary Anne told him. "But he hurt you. You're actually considering getting back with him?"

"I-I don't know. I'm not going to give it much thought unless I actually accept the movie role which I don't think I want to."

"What so you're not going to accept the movie role?" Kim asked.

Octavia shrugged. "I don't think so. Besides we're in grade twelve and literally in a few months we're going to start sending applications in for college. It'll be okay. It was only one role."

"One role?" Kim exclaimed. "Octavia, I don't care if this has to do with Jack Matias but that movie has stars in it. Oscar winning stars. You could become famous. Not just doing little roles here and there but this is your chance to be Hollywood famous. Take the chance."

"I'll think about it. I don't have to give an answer until next week."

Their conversation droned off in my head as I looked down at my iPod screen.

Turtle:

Bananas?

(2)Apples?

(3)Oranges?

(4)Pineapple?

(5)Guava?

I almost snorted. What?

Me:

Have you even eaten a guava before?

Turtle:

No. Have you?

Me:

Nope.

Turtle:

We're going to eat one when you come over on Wednesday.

Me:

Why?

Turtle:

Because a wise man once said 'All life is an experiment. The more experiements you make the better.'

Me:

Who said that?

Turtle :

Ralph Waldo Emerson. See you in class.

"See you in class." Eduardo repeated in a dramatic high pitched voice. "Oh my God Lucas I can't wait to see you in class so I can-"

I glared at him to see if he would finish that sentence. Honestly him and Wesley would be the greatest of friends since they're so similar.

Eduardo stopped talking and lowered his voice. "Um...so I can talk about Advanced Functions with you. Yay Math!"

"Nice save." I said sarcastically. I turned my head to Octavia to see her glaring at something behind me.

I looked over my shoulder to find Lydia walking towards the stairs to the above platform beside us, looking through her bag for something. Beside her Joey was looking through his phone, an arm around her.

They both looked so disconnected with one another and not just because they were doing different things. It was so obvious. It was like they didn't care about one another. It was a wonder how they were still in a relationship whether it was on and off or not.

Lydia took out her phone and looked up, catching Octavia's eyes. She redirected herself under Joey's arm, pulling him along as she came up to our table. "Hey Oct."

"What do you want?" Octavia snapped.

"Nothing. I can't say hi to a friend?" She sounded so innocent and I knew it was getting to Octavia. Everyone else knew it was getting to Octavia because Zen had taken out his earphones. He put his hand over Octavia's wrist to either comfort her or restrain her from possibly attacking.

"I'm not your friend. I haven't been your friend since you decided to do more than just kiss my ex boyfriend."

My eyes glanced over at Joey who coughed uncomfortably. He removed his arm from Lydia's shoulder and wandered over to the staircase where his other friends were to avoid the conversation. Great boyfriend.

"And I thought we were over that." Lydia mumbled.

"Clearly you're not." I couldn't help but say sarcastically under my breath.

That's when Lydia's green eyes shot over to scan me and I freeze. Shit, she heard me. All of the confidence I had felt since talking to Lucas had
