"He finished talking to Stephanie not too long ago," Corey chuckled. "So you could understand why we're all little shaken up."

The sleepiness from Virginie's eyes immediately melted away. At the mention of Stephanie's name, her eyes narrowed. "That stupid bitch." She looked at Alex as if she was seeing him for the first time. Her eyes softened as she walked towards him with her hand outstretched. "How are you feeling? You hit your head hard."

He was suddenly reminded of his lack of clothing and blushed from his embarrassment. "Yeah, I'm feeling a lot better now, thanks to you. Thanks for taking off my suit and putting me in your bed."

"Sounds kinky," Colette joked, her eyebrows curling into a playful arch.

Virginie rolled her eyes, pulling her arm away from Alex. "I'm sure that would sound kinky to your vanilla ass."

Colette folded her arms and knitted her eyebrows. "Hey, just because that one time I said―"

"Anyway, what did you all talk about? She probably said something about us having an affair." Virginie made her way towards the kitchen area to grab some of the grapes that Colette and Corey had left out. She popped one in the mouth and stared at them. "Are y'all going to explain what happened or...?"

Alex swallowed nervously before answering. "She knows about you."

Virginie's expression didn't change. She continued munching on her grapes as if she was listening to a nature documentary on Animal Planet. "Knows about me how? She always says a million things about me so what does she have to say now?"

"She knows what you're actually here for."

She coughed and looked at Alex strangely. "What? How could she have figured that out all on her own?"

"She didn't. Her father told her."

Virginie groaned. "Ugh, why? This creates so many unnecessary problems."

Alex was surprised. "You don't seem too beat up about it."

She shrugged. "I'm not. Her father is a kingpin, and she's living off of his blood money. I have plenty of things to blackmail her for. She won't bother us." She popped a couple of more grapes into her mouth. "Besides, the threat is contained for now. I should shift my focus towards Robert for the time being."

She's going to what?

"Virginie..." Colette warned, eyeing Alex's shaking form.

"What?" Virginie asked. "I have been slacking when it comes to him. Those girls aren't going to save themselves from that rigid bastard."

"So you're going to leave me just like that?" Alex shouted. "After all we've been through?"

Virginie dropped the fruit that she had been holding, realizing what Colette had been trying to warn her about. "That's not what I meant, Alex. You know that I―"

"No, Virginie, as a matter of fact, I don't know. You've been playing with my emotions ever since that moment we met in the coffee shop back in December. How do you I know that this isn't all just another game to you? That I'm not just some guy that you work for? How do I know that all the smiles, laughs, and jokes that we shared weren't a part of some contract that you have with your sick boss?"

Corey threw up his hands in frustration. Virginie stiffened at the mention of her boss. "So that's what this is about. This is about the conversation that you had with him. He fed you some lies based on his read of your insecurities, and you went along with it."

"What was I supposed to think? The man sounded so sure of himself."

Corey grabbed Colette's hand and started leading her out of the room. "Let's let these two hash this out privately. This has nothing to do with us."

Colette ripped her hand out of his grasp and stood firm with her arms crossed. "No, I'm staying here because if Virginie tells me about this later, I won't believe the bullshit flying out of this idiot's mouth."

Corey sighed and shook his head but stayed beside Colette for support.

"I don't understand why you're acting like this. I feel like my actions speak for themselves," Virginie replied.

"We kissed and then your boss is telling me that all of your actions are part of some contract. How do you think I'm going to react?"

Colette gasped and narrowed her eyes at Virginie. "You two kissed and you didn't tell me? What the hell?"

Virginie snorted. "Okay, Miss I-made-out-with-Corey-in-my-bedroom." Corey and Colette both blushed and looked down, embarrassed. "What? Did you think I didn't notice? Y'all have matching strawberry stained lips and messy hair. At least y'all finally got a room for Christ's sake. Jeez."

"But―"

Virginie rolled her eyes and sighed. "Yes, I did kiss Alex many moons ago. But it wasn't just a kiss. I would say it was more like making love with our mouths, wouldn't you agree, Alex?"

Alex was glad that his skin was too dark to show the rush of blood that flooded his cheeks. The way she described it made his mouth dry. He unconsciously licked his lips.

"So that's that. Moving onto more pressing matters." Virginie waved her off with a dismissive hand, her eyes still focused on Alex. "Did you ever consider the fact that he's just jealous? Jealous that I connected with someone that's not him? You must've realized from your conversation that he is delusional. He lied to you to make you think that our relationship is fake that it would create a rift between us that would force me to leave." Her eyes became bored again. She picked up the grapes that had fallen on the table and went to the sink to wash them off. "It worked like a charm. Look at you, you're not even trusting yourself."

For a self-proclaimed intelligent guy, you're pretty dumb. "Virginie, I―"

She groaned. "I don't know how many times I have to tell you this." She paused and took a deep breath before continuing, her words coming out softer. "I'm not going to you leave you, Alex. I don't know what else I can do to show you that I sincerely mean that. I know I'm not a woman of many words, but you mean a lot to me and that fact that you would think that this is all some game to me hurts."

There was a heavy silence in the room while Alex racked his brain for the perfect thing to say. But there was no ideal thing to say. There were no flowery words that he could use to respond to Virginie's declaration. "I'm sorry," he croaked.

"What's done is done." She leaned over the counter with a mischievous grin. "But what are you going to do about it?"

Alex trapped his foot impatiently as he waited for Stephanie to answer the door. He didn't want this taking any more time that it needed to. He should've done this a long time ago. Perhaps God was punishing him for having waited so long.

Stephanie answered the door in red lingerie that was lacy and racy. She wore red lipstick with fluttery lashes with a soft pink blush that gave her face a natural flush. She leaned up against the doorway with her lips pursed, ready for a kiss. He sighed to himself. Stephanie was beautiful. But she wasn't for him.

"Could you move out the doorway so I can enter please?" Alex asked, sounding more bored than he meant to.

Stephanie opened the door with a pouty face and motioned for him to enter. The apartment had been dimmed; the lights were low, and there were candles and rose petals amuck. He saw a bottle of Krug champagne on ice by the couch, and the entire place smelled like vanilla candles. Sensual music played quietly on the speakers.

"What is all this?" He wondered aloud, stepping into the apartment, gazing at the surroundings in amazement.

Stephanie did a little twirl with a smug look on her face. "I wanted you to remember why you agreed to do this arrangement in the first place." She walked closer to him, swaying her hips awkwardly. She dropped her voice to a whisper. "And why you stayed."

If you wanted to do that, you should've had pictures of Virginie all over the walls. That would've made more sense. He only sniffed in response. "Hm. You do know why I'm here, don't you, Stephanie?"

She sat down on the couch and patted on the empty seat next to her, ignoring his question. "Come sit next to me."

Alex complied with her request, feeling satisfied that this was the last time she was going to have the opportunity to order him around. He tried again. "Do you know why I'm here, Stephanie?"

She grabbed a glass of wine from the coffee table that he hadn't even noticed was there and took a long sip before answering. "Yes, you want to call off our arrangement because of...that woman."

Wow, her disdain has risen to a level that she cannot even say her name. I cannot imagine hating another person that much. "She's not the reason why but yes, that is why I am here."

She coughed. "Bullshit." Alex pretended not to hear her. He was going to try his hardest not to get into a fight with her tonight. "Do you know why I'm here?"

Now Alex was confused. "Because this is your house?"

She laughed. "Oh, my goodness, your sense of humor..." She smiled lovingly at him. "No, I'm going to try to convince you to stay with me. But this time, we can go at it for real. Not just for show."

Alex shook his head. "That was never an option. Stephanie, it's ov―"

She set down her wine glass before grabbing his hands, the sudden contact forcing him to look her straight in the eyes. "I love you."

Alex blanched, hoping the disgust that he felt in his heart wasn't showing on this face. He had an inkling she felt this way about him for a long time, but he hoped that he was wrong.

"You don't have to say anything. Just listen. I wanted to show you how much I love you. I committed crimes. I was willing to get arrested. All for you."

"What are you trying to say?"

"I'm the one who put out the hit on Virginie's life." She announced proudly, her voice not hinting at any regret or hesitation.

Alex swore that he felt his heart stop. Suddenly, everything made sense. Why she lied about taking care of him in Jamaica. Why she left him that strange voicemail. Why she hadn't been phased when the men had come into the restaurant. The coded language that Colette was using on his phone call. He started taking deep breaths, trying to calm himself down.

Stephanie did not seem to be phased by Alex's sudden shaking. She was too absorbed with her proclamation to him. "You see, I knew that you would never be able to see me for what I could be if Virginie was in the way. I knew you two were having an affair behind my back and that was why you didn't think that I was good enough for you. So I commissioned the Players to keep an eye on you and Virginie and report back to me with information. They were insistent on the fact that you were faithful to me, but I still knew that if she was in your life, you could never love me. You could never give your all to me. You could never see our fabulous potential together. So I commissioned her death anyway. I'm the one who put in the request for her to be tortured. The leader of the Players was only happy to oblige." She laughed. "A little bit too happy, I suppose, but I guess that was his downfall. My only regret is that I didn't get to see it. I only found out when it was too late. I was calling the guy who helped me, George, so that I could see if I could have an option to live stream it on my TV when he told me the awful news that she had been rescued. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. All of that money down the drain and the bitch is still alive!"

She asked for Virginie to be tortured specifically? Fuck. I asked Virginie to protect me. I only put her life in more danger and brought her back to her mother's death. I am such a piece of shit. Fuck!

She looked up at him expectantly. "But now you see! You see why we're perfect for each other. How I would do anything for you. I love you so much, Alex."

"I never asked you to do anything like that for me, Stephanie." He finally managed. The suffocating rage that was building in his chest was almost ready to burst.

She giggled, taking another sip of wine. "But doesn't that make it so much better? I did all of that without you asking me. Imagine what we could do together!"

Alex said nothing. He was trying to convince himself not to act. Don't kill her. Don't kill her. Don't kill her. Don't kill her.

"But I was thinking," she murmured seductively with a smile, "maybe I could try again. Now that you know that I love you and I did all of that to save you, you understand why we have to get rid of her. Why she's a menace. The guy who is chasing after you is dead, anyway. I was told the leader of the Players is gone, so there's no longer a threat, right? So you don't need her anymore. She was going to leave anyway, so why don't we make her do it permanently? I'm sure my dad has plenty of people who could get rid of her. For much cheaper, too. What do you say?"

Alex lunged for her neck with a blinding fury, sending all of his logic out of the window.

Oops.
