Episode 24: Baby It's Cold Outside

In the half light of the corner, the woman appeared small as the phone rang in her ears. She bit down onto her lips in anticipation as it continued. On the verge of hanging up after several tries, she finally heard the vibrations cease.

He had picked up.

"Nicholas."

She faltered at the tension that was scarily palpable. It was on the brink of combustion, without even being in his physical presence.

Just hearing his deep voice was enough to make her start shaking nervously.

Emily cleared her throat quickly, afraid he might hang up if she took too long to speak.

"Uhhh, hi. It's Emily."

Silence.

"Who is that again?"

Emily flinched at the coldness in his tone.

Ouch.

That one hurt.

"Y-Your wife?"

"The last time I checked a wife has a duty to inform her husband of her whereabouts -- not leave him completely clueless and worried out of his mind when she doesn't come home."

He was pissed.

Definitely upset.

Emily squeezed her eyes shut as she folded her lips in contemplation.

How could she explain this situation without sounding articulatorily challenged or just a plain liar?

Just tell him the truth!

Emily listened to that side of her mind and her mouth started flying before she knew it.

"I know it sounds stupid but-- I was locked inside the on-set trailer all night. How I ended up inside there you may ask? Because I was really tired and needed some sleep so someone advised me to take some rest. When I woke up, it was night though and the person I told to fetch me when it was time to film hadn't. I left my phone in the jacket pocket, and that was left in the car, so I couldn't call anyone for help. I'm really sorry if I worried you last night. Really. I can't imagine how you must have felt. I swear it won't happen again."

Emily, feeling really anxious, could hear her heart pounding loudly inside her ears, like mini speakers.

Nicholas hadn't said a word.

Still hadn't even when a minute passed.

The only sound that was audible was that of his heavy breathing mixed with Emily's erratic one. It was strangely reassuring that at least some part of him was reacting to her words.

"Nicholas, I-"

"Are you okay?"

"What?"

"I asked if you are okay. You said you were left in the trailer alone. Last night was viciously cold."

Emily felt her heart warm.

She was easier in her mind that he didn't sound as upset as before. Only by a little bit.

"I'm fine. Thanks for asking."

"That's good."

"Yes."

It was a second before his concern shifted to outrage, "How the fuck did they manage to get you stuck inside there?"

The question was as good as they came.

"I don't know. Normally these areas are densely populated with staff members. I guess luck wasn't on my side yesterday."

"Neither on mine." Nicholas said gruffly.

"I'm sorry."

"It's fine," he dismissed, "I'm just glad you weren't abducted or ended up freezing to death having gotten lost somewhere like I had feared."

Her breathing stopped for a second.

"Why were thinking such awful things? Couldn't you think of me being selfish and not informing you of staying over at a friend's or my manger's place?"

"The mind is a powerful yet wicked thing, Emily. I tell you, I don't wish to see the bad things in life but sometimes our thoughts have a way of going in their own directions. Often times on the negative path, bringing out the pessimists in us. Of course, I hoped you were being a bad girl and disregarded my new position in your life, but at the same time, an overwhelming part of me was having my insides being eaten away with fear. Fear for you. Fear of the outside world that's so dark and someone as contrastingly radiant as you are caught up in it."

She couldn't help the wave of emotions that washed over her.

Beneath the surface of Nicholas' conscious dispositions or his unperturbed forefront, it was clearer to Emily now that he really was making the efforts to assert his position as her lawfully wedded husband in her life. Not only physically but emotionally.

Every time he said something as awakening as he did just a moment ago, she found herself remembering why she had begun to fall for him in the first place.

Nicholas King was one of a kind.

The woman recalled when she had asked David on her moving day about Nicholas' personality and he had said, "He is the kind of man that this world needs."

Emily was certain, without a trace of doubt in her mind, that was true.

Maybe not in the sense that the entire world would be crying out for him because that claim would a hyperbole in and of itself. Nicholas was no divinity. However, his presence was necessitated by Emily.

The statement became unquestionably accurate with the reality that she now needed him in her life.

Nobody desired Nicholas in their lives more than her.

"Thank you, Nicholas."

"For what?"

"Coming into my life."

Nicholas let out a light chuckle, though his heart, on the other hand, leaped out of his chest at her spontaneous declaration.

"Well, in that case, I should be the one thanking you. You're the one who stood in front of me boldly, and shamelessly I might add, asking me to marry you."

Emily winced.

"Hearing you say that sounds so embarrassing."

"What? The fact that you, as a woman, asked me?"

"Exactly. I think I deserve a good scolding for ignoring traditional customs. My mother would catch a heartattack if she heard that I was the one who proposed."

He was laughing out right this time.

She marvelled at the sound of its melodious baritones.

There no denying it. Emily really liked his laugh.

Well, this one in particular out of all the others.

The thing with this man was that his expressions of humor all varied in his vocal tones.

He would do the subtle chuckles, teasing snorts and snickers or a full blown laughter like this one, where he could be rolling in the aisles because of how amused he was. His enjoyment displayed was with such unalloyed delight that it was powerfully evocative of strange emotions inside her heart.

She sounded so damn whipped.

"Our society's norms are overrated, and frankly, boring. Who says a self-assured, confident and independent woman can't propose marriage to a man if she wants to?"

Emily was speechless.

"I-"

"Plus, you have no reason to worry or be self conscious about these things. I'll be sure to do it properly when the time is right."

Was he talking about what she thought he was?

If so, he didn't have to.

Being with him was enough already.

She was scared he had taken her words as indirectly hinting at some kind of dissatisfaction with him.

Still, the woman was moved that he already had plans to go through with the intimate procedure that they had skipped in their relationship.

"Nicholas..." She said, sounding touched.

"Emily..." He mocked her voice that was in awe.

She rolled her eyes.

"I'll be hanging up now."

"As you always do when you can't suppress your inappropriate thoughts that I'm the main character of. Emily, do enlighten me, in detail, about your vivid imagination. Am I that irresistible that you have to think about me all the time?"

"You're really something else to be asking this."

"Don't you know me by now? I never lose an opportunity to tease you. I can just imagine how red you'll be after I'm finished speaking to you."

She felt her face start to warm up instantly.

His voice and words were to be blamed for it.

"I'm really going to hang up now."

"As you wish..." He bade, sounding unsurprised.

She was about to end the call, but he spoke again making her put the phone back to her ear.

"Emily?"

"Yes, Nicholas?"

"Remember that it's cold outside, baby. Freezing actually. So be good and wear your jacket for me while filming, okay?"

"Yes. Goodbye!" Emily squeaked as she hung up the phone.

Her breath was coming on in a short supply as the cold air did nothing to cool down her cheeks that were now on fire.

Baby...

Nicholas had called her 'baby'!

And it sounded exceedingly hot.

Endearments like 'sweetheart' and 'darling' she had finally started getting used to, well at least her heart was prepared for them.

But the 'baby' card was a killer.

She couldn't imagine why any woman would hate hearing it.

At least hearing it come from Nicholas.

Emily screwed her eyes shut as she held her chest, begging her heart to spare her this once.

He seriously needed to stop.

She felt like she was on drugs.

Derailed yet perfectly happy.

The King Addiction.

List of symptoms:

1. Sensations of butterflies

2. Increase in heart rate

3. Sudden inability to speak coherently

4. Development of lustful characteristics

And...

5. Always left feeling high and dry.

She sighed at her self-diagnosis, wondering how she could alleviate this problem.

Unfortunately, her heart, mind- even her goddamn cheeks started laughing at her attempts!

How could she go on a withdrawal from someone so irresistible? It was mocking.

Her husband really was irresistible, and not even in the simplest terms. He was everything which embodied the word too.

His speech, his mannerisms, his educated yet suggestive jokes, his body-

Now that Nicholas had brought it up, she really was starting to have those kind of thoughts about him, wasn't she?

Emily clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth at the thought, her face scrunching up with indignation.

Curse you, Nicholas King.
