Amir •

Amir's heart quivered as he heard Luna tell him Happy Birthday, but that was not the reason. It was because she said those two words that sparked him inside. My husband.

He wasn't sure when he'd tell Luna he'd talked to her father and his parents about marrying her. While she was talking about seeing him as her husband, Amir had already gotten everyone's blessing to ask her to marry him.

On their birthday, he wanted to express his devotion to her. But reality had set in. Last time, headlights interrupted what they were about to do. He wouldn't force Luna to do anything she didn't want to and would enjoy holding her all night. They could do that while stargazing through the sky window in her bedroom.

He took a room on the third floor next to Faisal. Amir knew Cami was in there and didn't want to listen to them talk all night. He considered taking a lengthy, cold shower soon. He lost control when Luna's softest part touched his toughest region and teased him. He didn't know how to feel about being so turned on.

He wanted things to move slowly, like when a couple is dating, but neither of them was in that stage anymore. He was concerned about her emotional and physical well-being.

"Luna?" he mumbled as he stopped near an archway.

"Yes?"

"I just wanted to tell you I respect you and we don't have to do anything you aren't ready for."

She gazed at him. Everything he had ever felt for her crashed down and burned his soul. His stomach twisted as he saw the beauty of her heart through the dark marbles in her eyes. His breath caught in his throat as he waited for her to guide him on what to do next.

Luna nodded. "It's okay," she whispered, sending a ripple through his chest and speeding up his heartbeat. "Let's keep going."

Amir acted quickly after hearing those remarks. The words were as forceful as the three she told him often. Being close to her and loving her wouldn't fix everything, but it would help her soul.

He replied, "Yes, Ma'am," making her laugh.

He leaned down, grasped her body, and captured her mouth before rushing up the stairs. She moaned with her arms around his neck and chin on his shoulder. He held back a groan as he took two steps at a time toward her room. Since Sarah was with Liberty, it was empty.

Amir opened her door and kept his mouth on her while walking to the bed. He couldn't stop kissing her, drinking her in, and connecting with her heart. They ended up bumping into things while moving in the dark. She chuckled occasionally, making his chest and body thump. On bad days, her laughter was all he needed, and their past washed away as her mouth explored his.

He turned them toward the bed as she nipped his lip, emitting a faint whimper. That sound boiled his blood, and he was afraid he would combust before they even did anything. When she kissed him, he wanted to strip the sheets and blankets and find something better for her, something from home and richer. That sent shockwaves of whirling sensations into his veins.

Screw the sheets.

She carefully perched on the edge, and he moved as slowly as he could, even if his body wanted him to go faster than a snail. Luna smiled, and Amir's heart pounded as he kneeled in front of her.

She was like a queen—Amir couldn't look away.

As he lowered himself between her legs, his pulse raced throughout his body. "You are the queen of my heart."

Luna lifted her chin, bit her lip, and smiled.

For him, she deserved the world and all the pleasures life could bring. She ran her small fingers up his brow while leaning forward. Her touch penetrated his cells. "And you're the king of mine."

Turning his head, Amir kissed her palm and ran his fingers down her thighs to her dress. He kissed her skin as Luna threw her head back in ecstasy. She stopped him by slowly raising her dress past her ankles and placing her hands on his shoulders.

After standing up, Amir turned and squatted, staring at her. Luna's long, beautiful dress wrapped around her thighs. He was enthralled when she fluffed her hair about her shoulders. Her essence fascinated him.

His heart stopped.

He couldn't move or think.

He couldn't feel his lungs working properly. His head was dizzy as he stared at her. She was a goddess. She consumed him. He would die for her at that very moment if it meant keeping her safe. Luna left him breathless.

"You are the most beautiful person in this universe," Amir said, rising. He stood there and watched a slight flush touch her cheeks. "I love it when I see you smile. I want to see more of it."

As he held her cheek, Luna looked up. "I'm serious," Amir murmured. "You're incredible."

A shy smile came across her lips. "You know exactly what to say. Your flattery is amusing."

He shook his head. "It's not flattery. Yeah, you have a few cuts and bruises, but deep inside is the heart of a warrior with the soul of a queen."

Luna's blush deepened, and she grabbed the top of his shirt, hooking her fingers around his collar. "Can I be honest about something?"

"Please."

"Don't get me wrong, I want to go further than this, and I hate appearing to be a tease, but I'm—"

"Don't, Moon. Never feel that way again." Amir curled his fingers around the nape of her neck and locked his gaze on her. "Whatever is going on, just tell me."

She bowed her head and crossed her arms across her chest. "You wouldn't feel differently from me?"

"No. What is it?"

She stood still for a few seconds and finally took a seat on the edge of the bed. "I don't know. I think . . . I . . ."

"You can say it," Amir said as he draped his arm around her shoulders.

"I guess I wanted to wait before doing anything intimate. So much has happened that I'm still feeling vulnerable."

"Oh, baby," he mumbled as he drew her close to his chest. "I completely understand. We don't have to do something that you're not ready for."

"That's part of it. The other part is that this is our first time together. It's your first time." Luna's eyes glistened beneath the moonlight as she softly peered into him. "This would be a huge deal for you, Amir."

"I had waited my entire life for this moment. You, being my first, would be heavenly."

She laughed at his lame attempt to sound more romantic than he thought he was. "Ignore that. Sorry," he said.

"No. Amir, I want our first time to be after we're married. I want to do things we dreamed of once we are officially joined as one because it would be a new beginning for us if that makes sense." She let out a harsh laugh and shook her head. "Nevermind. I'm being silly."

"Luna, you're not being silly. You're perfect."

"Perfect? Me? That's not an adjective to describe me."

"You're perfect for me." He ran a hand through his hair and smiled. "It makes perfect sense. I am with you on this."

"Really?"

Amir turned toward her quicker than he intended to. "Yes. Baby, I love you. What you want to do makes sense in every way possible."

"Good. It's not that I don't want to get kinky with you . . ." She paused her sentence and spun the ring Vikram had given her around her finger. He couldn't read her mind because they were both wearing lead rings. "I'm just thinking about the future again."

Jumping up, Amir reached into his pocket and pulled out his grandfather's ring. Then he immediately crouched in front of her on one knee. It was either now or never, and he decided this was the time. "You are not silly or thinking too far ahead, Luna. I can't believe I'm going to do it this way."

She shifted her head and wiped a few tears from her eyelids.

Amir cupped her cheek with his palm and brought her closer to his frame. "Luna Reneé Carlyle, I love you. I love Sarah like my daughter. It might not be the best time to ask you this question right now, and it's not how most people in my country do it." He placed the ring in her palm. "I was lucky to have a conversation with your father about marrying you. Lawrence hesitated at first, but he granted me his blessing to propose to you. I would have loved for your father to get to know me, or at least prepared him for my proposal ahead of time, but we've only been out of the facility for less than twenty-four hours."

Luna stared at him like he said something crazy. It was probably because he was rambling too much.

"After Vikram spoke up for me to Mr. Carlyle, I called my family next. It was early in the morning in Pakistan, but they were delighted that I called them. My mother said she would love for you and Sarah to be a part of our family. Faisal spoke about you. He thinks the world of you and Sarah." Amir looked down and grinned, knowing she was confused while soaking all of this in. "Now that we have everyone's blessing, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, Luna?"

She stayed silent for several minutes, which felt like a decade to him. He sensed it. Telling her what he did earlier when she wasn't around was the right time. For their birthday, he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.

"I know this is sudden, but I want to spend every second, minute, and waking hour with you. Only you, Moon. No other person. Being in your life is Allah's greatest blessing."

Now tears were streaming down his cheeks. Putting his heart out on the line here was taking a toll on him. He continued, looking at her. "If you agree, we could plan it for a week or a month. I want to be with you always, Luna Carlyle."

Her chest rose sharply as her eyes shook in their sockets. Then her eyes widened. The realization just hit.

Amir held her hands in his and felt his ring brush against her palm. He wanted to slide it on her finger, but she still hadn't given him an answer. "Do you want to get married to me?"

Luna's eyes locked with his, and she gasped. "Yes. I do."

"Good." His lips curved up into a soft smile. "Just to be clear . . . that's a yes?" She smiled, sliding his ring on her third left finger. He couldn't wait to get her a new one. She just agreed to a life with him. That was huge. "What do you say about getting married this Friday, on the twelfth?"
