Amir •

As Cami and Luna sat on the bench outside Dr. Kim's office, Amir leaned against the wall with his arms crossed. The nurses stood on either side of them, and the girls weren't supposed to talk to each other. They couldn't make eye contact with him. He stood there until it was their turn.

He scanned the log-in sheet once they came to the door, and from the looks of it, it showed Cami was before Luna and the other patient had gone inside before them. Anybody out in the hall could hear whimpers from Ms. Montgomery, and the head of the facility must be doing something to her.

Amir couldn't tell Luna everything he knew about her dream. He didn't want to worry her or keep her more on edge than she already is. He had peeked into her mind and saw himself being taken down. He felt the taser hit his body like he was there in the flesh. The shock scattered through his veins and slammed inside his chest. He wasn't sure why Luna feared the institution knew about their abilities, because if that were the case, many people would be in trouble.

The doctor would be trying to get a Nobel Peace Prize for discovering a new species. None of those things have happened.

Amir saw her dream from the beginning when she was bought into the office and was told she will undergo another round of heavily sedated medicine and shock therapy. She was revealed on camera talking to him, and to the staff, it appeared like he was a vampire; his reflection wasn't shown.

He wanted Faisal to be with Cami, but he was probably in the lab with Cassie making his magic elixir. His cousin was almost done making a way for Tethered Souls to meet in person, and Amir couldn't wait to tell Luna about it. He'll inject the antidote and try to smuggle her out once it's ready. She shouldn't be tortured when they knew Chase was paying the doctor. They both knew her ex was behind everything.

Faisal finally appeared beside Cami and held her shaky hand. She tried to look as if she was staring down at the ground, so she wouldn't seem suspicious. He smiled lovingly at her, and Amir quietly hoped their connection will continue once she was in the outside world. He knew his cousin was devoted to her and wouldn't ever leave.

"Hey, Amir."

"Hey."

"What's going on?" Faisal asked, coming closer to him.

"Cami and Luna are being brought into the doctor's office. There's another patient in there now." Amir ushered him away a few steps so Luna and Cami couldn't hear him. "That patient sounds like she's in torment. I can't exactly draw attention to the situation without scaring the girls."

"Damn," Faisal murmured.

"Cami's turn is next, so when she goes in, stay by her side and see what that doctor says. I will do the same for Luna."

"Is there something to be alarmed about?"

Amir shrugged a shoulder. "I don't know. Neither of their sessions begins at this time. Luna had a horrible dream last night that was surreal to both of us."

"It must've been bad."

Dr. Kim stepped out of his office as the other patient limped and was being carried by her guard. The doctor put on a fake smile and gazed down at the girls.

"No need to be scared, ladies. Lily was caught spitting out her medicine last night and had to have it given to her manually. Now, Miss. Taylor, if you would . . ." He waved his arm toward the door, gesturing for Cami to go inside.

Cami rose to her feet and strolled through the doorway, her arms crossed over the other. Faisal rushed off to follow behind her, and Amir sat beside Luna, running his hand along her soft skin.

Forty minutes rolled by, and the door finally opened. Cami walked out with her nurse holding her up, and Faisal followed along with a stern look on his face. Luna's breath hitched as she formed small semi-circles into the palm of her hands.

"What happened?" Amir asked him.

"The asshole gave Cami a shot . . . in the rear. It was to teach her a lesson by faking her dosage. And that wasn't what happened. Cami was sick all last night over that stuff."

"They're wrong for this. So wrong."

Dr. Kim then walked out with two military men and a nurse. He motioned for Luna to stand up and follow him, and she did as she was told. They led her to a medical floor and brought her into a room that could accommodate three patients.

"Sit down on the examining bed, Luna," Dr. Kim said, standing beside the counter.

"I'm glad you are being cooperative. I was informed that you took your medicine yesterday with no problems," he said, her eyes shooting up at Amir's. "The hallucinogen you were given was a strong dose, and you probably had some interesting dreams last night."

A hallucinogen?

Amir wished he could punch Dr. Kim square in the face by teasing Luna about what they gave her and about her dream.

Arching her brows at him, Luna scoffed quietly. "Nope. Nothing. I slept peacefully."

The nurse behind Dr. Kim tsked. "It's very important if you take this seriously. We have procedures we need to conduct here."

Luna shot her a go-to-hell expression, and Amir stood beside his girl. She wasn't taking whatever they were selling.

The color of the doctor's cheeks heightened as he stared at her, tilting his head. "It's rare I pass out that narcotic, Luna. I had thought Cami would be the one to keep it in her system, but . . ."

"Because she didn't, you gave her a shot in the ass?"

Dr. Kim looked baffled by Luna's knowledge of what happened between him and Cami.

Amir chuckled.

Eyes widening, the doctor glanced at the nurse where she stood beside Sergeant Decker and cleared his throat, then jotted down notes on a notepad. "Your blood pressure should be higher than this. One-twenty over eighty."

The nurse scribbled down Luna's result on her clipboard, and Amir shifted himself behind the doctor to monitor everything he was writing. For once, Dr. Kim's notes weren't private. Luna adjusted herself on the bed, eyeballing everyone in the room.

"Luna's pulse was in the high forties each time we checked, and her blood pressure was also in the high levels. After swallowing the hallucinogen last night, her rates are better, which is progress."

"Well, if it's progress, then I should get ready for release. Right?"

That earned her a small smile from across the room, but Amir's suspicion about the hospital was turned up a notch.

"It's not legal for you to keep me here. Chase and I are no longer together."

"So I've heard. But he signed over your rights to the state. Liberty doesn't have any authority on the matter. A hearing will be held in two weeks to determine if you're deemed fit to continue living in the outside world."

This riled Amir up as he clenched his fists, and his nails cut into his skin.

"Why? I've done everything you have asked."

"Do you know what the hallucinogen was supposed to show us last night?"

She shook her head.

Dr. Kim hopped up from his chair and turned on the monitor, then pressed a button on the keyboard.

A video showed her lying in her bed, tangled in her sheets and screaming out, and then she turned to her side and spoke to Amir once her dream was over. The sound wasn't clear enough to hear what she said, but it was clear she was speaking in her bed with no one next to her. The facility put a hidden camera in her room and monitored her without her permission.

This was bad. This meant war, and they had probably seen her in her private moments in her room.

Amir knew that Luna was watched in the other rooms she had stayed in, but not in this new one. It wasn't on the same floor as the Red Security Wing, and there were signs in each of those rooms saying that patients were being monitored for their safety.

His body tensed as he shifted positions and glanced back at her.

"Luna, your hidden test last night revealed everything to us. While each of you on this floor was in the showers or the canteen, we had hidden cameras posted in the rooms where the air vent was. All the eight to ten ladies on this floor have one thing in common — hallucinations. And Miss. Taylor, well . . ."

"What about her?" Luna demanded, inching forward.

Amir shook his head, urging her to stop.

Staying behind the doctor, Amir glanced down as he watched Dr. Kim write the one thing that set him off, almost like throwing a time bomb.

Luna Carlyle, 23, Orange Security. Transportation to the Orange Security floor in 72 Hours.

Amir paced quickly toward her and held her hand. He didn't want her to go to that floor. She wouldn't be able to connect to other Tethered Souls, especially him since the walls were surrounded by some kind of lead. Tethered Souls weren't able to connect telepathically if they had lead around them. It acted as a shield, and Luna would be in total isolation and undergo an insane amount of treatments.

"Luna," Amir mumbled, urging her with his eyes to look up at the doctor and not him. "I have to warn you about something, and you will not like it." She inhaled a deep breath and squeezed his hand. "Dr. Kim has written you'll be transferred to the Orange Security floor. It will be in seventy-two hours."

The corners of her eyes gazed his way as tears streamed down her face. Amir leaned close and smoothed away her tears, fearful this moment could be their last together.

"Orange Security?"

Dr. Kim turned to the nurse, looking at her up and down like he suspected she leaked Luna that information. Luna laughed hysterically and smiled like The Joker, spooking him again.

"It wasn't the nurse over there. It was my intuition."

"Ms. Carlyle, one of the most remarkable things about people who have voices inside their heads, is the ability to never be alone. And while you're here, you can help me understand how you know certain things without stumbling upon something. I indicated nothing about you going to the Orange Security floor, so I don't know where you received that information."

"Don't do that to me, Dr. Kim. I know what it says, and what you're up to." Luna hopped down off the bed and looked over at Amir and then at the wall. "Your note says my name, age, and my location transfer. I am being moved."

"Please take Ms. Carlyle to her room. She needs to rest," Dr. Kim ordered.

"You are such a disgrace to doctors everywhere. You can't even admit what I know to be true. I have less than seventy-one hours to use wisely, so I'll get to it if you don't mind."

Luna was escorted back into her room fifteen minutes later, and Cami rushed to her side. Amir pulled her away for a moment to inform her what was happening as they stood inside Luna's small washroom.

"I know you had a shot earlier, Cami, but keep an eye on her. Dr. Kim has put Luna down for Orange Security. She will be transferred soon." Luna lay on her bed, curled up into a small ball, looking frightened. Amir continued, "You should also know the rooms on this floor are being monitored."

"Really? We've only seen the cameras in the hallways."

"It's in the vents." He stared up at the one on Luna's side. "Be careful with you and Faisal."

"They saw and heard us—me—being private."

Amir raised his eyebrows and slightly chuckled, not caring for her to go into detail about his relative. "Don't tell me anything else about you two. Speaking of which, where did Faisal go?"

"Cassie came, and she had something to discuss with him." Cami walked toward the door as guards began lining up against the wall. "Something big is about to go down. I don't know what, but this doesn't look good."

"Whatever this place is, it doesn't operate like a regular psychiatric hospital. Both of you have us. We'll figure out what's going on and do something about it. I will not be disconnected from my partner. They can forget it."
