His heart sunk like a shipwreck, slowly going deeper and deeper into the ocean after hitting an iceberg. But unlike that ship, Reece felt like he was just asking to ram through that mountain of death from the beginning. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

The unmoving body of the girl lay on the floor, being so still that for all he knew, she was dead.

'Don't be ridiculous,' he thought, shaking his head.

Nobody really noticed her. They didn't pay any attention to the body at all: the people trying to get in and out of the house simply stepped over her.

Suddenly, all those Friday the 13th movies where people were killed in plain sight made sense.

For the first time in a while, Reece didnt know what to do. Part of him wanted to follow his instinct of avoiding trouble and just walk away from the scene, act like nothing happened, as if he had no idea who the girl was. But in another part, the one that he did not like very much, he felt a twinge of guilt. After all, he was the one that got caught pouring the pill into the drink. It was because of him that she drank it.

And if anything were to happen to Sierra while she was unconsciouscompletely unaware of what is going on around her. If suddenly a couple of horrible people decided to take advantage

He shuddered in disgust at the idea.

And that was enough to move his legs towards the house again, limping as he felt pain in his legs with each step, as though the thorns were still hooked in his skin. Hopefully, they would heal overnight, or else he'll have to go to school walking like a crab.

It felt like a huge rock just rolled off his shoulders when he saw the slight movements from Sierra. Once he was close enough to see, it was clear that her chest heaving up and down as she took short but deep breaths

Reece let out a sigh of relief before he slid his hands under her back and lifted the body. Grunting at the weight, he struggled to keep his balance as he not-so-gently threw her over his shoulder. Her small size made it easy for him to keep a firm grip but it certainly wasnt any lighter.

These kinds of situations gave him motivation to work out more often.

It was hard for him to move, and there were a few moments where could have toppled over as the pain in his grew stronger each moment he was standing, but when he actually succeeded walking out of the driveway, Reece felt as though he had succeeded enough to win an award. Maybe an Oscar for acting like he was a good person.

The streetlights in the neighborhood lined up all the way by the sidewalks until the end of the road but barely any of them were actually on. As if that did not make the night dark enough, the moon was hidden behind the clouds, only a hint of its light managed to shine through. But still, the night had that ominous feeling that made Reece think that he should anticipate a vampire to suddenly pop out of nowhere.

But unfortunately, life wasn't that cool because the only person that popped out of the bushes around the house was a familiar red-headed girl. Well, perhaps this was as close to a vampire as he would ever get.

Because Halley definitely looked like she's ready to suck the blood out of him.

She stomped over to him, her boots clacked against the pavement loudly and her frizzy hair blew wild from the gust of cold air that brushed past them and it somehow made her look like she was a burning flame in the night.

Frankly, she looked even scarier than usual.

"What are you doing?" The fact that she wasn't shouting made it worse, her quiet hisses were more threatening. "I want her signature, not the person!"

"This isn't Mikayla, relax." Even as he said it, Reece knew that there wasn't any reason to actually calm down at all. "This-" He patted the body on his shoulder. "-is Sierra."

"So?"

"She drank the pill."

Halley groaned, her eyes seem to roll so high up that she seemed to be looking at Heaven. Or Hell.

Probably Hell.

"It's not my fault!" Reece defended, but he knew that wasnt true. "She took the cup from my hand and drank it."

"Let me get this straight," she said, her arms crossing over her chest. "This girl just took your cup for no reason?"

"That's not it. She saw me with Mikayla and I guess... saw me put something in the drink and-"

"What!?" The sharp shriek made Reece wince. "She saw you put the pill in there?"

Reece gulped. "Technically, I only poured in the powder..." he went silent when he saw the look on Halley's face. Maybe he should just shut up for now.

The red-headed girl went silent for a few moments, and she stood there with her eyes closed shut. Reece's legs were shaking, both from nervousness and Sierra's weight, but somehow he felt that if he were to move, he would end up with those legs chopped off instead.

"So," she started to talk again after what felt like hours but her eyes were still closed shut. "She saw you put something in the drink so she took it from you and drank it because...?"

"She thought that I was drugging Mikayla."

"And somehow it was a good idea to drink that thing rather than just throwing it away?"

"Don't blame me! It's her fault."

"If there's anything that's obvious, it's the fact that you're both idiots!" Halley snarled.

But Reece's legs were screaming at this point. "Can I put her down somewhere?" he asked feebly. "Before I pass out too."

"If you do then I swear I'll just leave you here," she warned.

"Please?" Reece pleaded, his eyebrows scrunching up as he stared at Halley to have some sort of mercy.

Her eyes were on fire but it wasn't long before she pointed at a tree about 20 feet away.

They walked there together, with Reece trying to catch up to her with sluggish feet. When they reached the tree, the boy didn't hesitate to throw the girl off of his shoulder, though he winced as the body almost hit one of the tree's giant roots.

"Be careful, dumbass!" Halley hissed. "We don't want her dead."

"Sorry," Reece muttered under his breath and sat down, leaning his head against the tree. The tree trunk was rough, but it felt nice to have a strong surface to lean on because his back was having a good time in Hell. His hands were covered in blood, he just noticed, and the blood was also smeared onto Sierra's back, tainting her white fabric with an ugly red.

Halley saw this as she kneeled down beside Sierra. "Are you okay?" she asked.

"Yeah, I am." Of course, he wasn't, but that was the answer basically everyone gives. "Might need to wrap my hands up later... what are you doing?"

"I'm looking for anything that could possibly be useful." Halley as she patted all over the unconscious girl's body.

He smirked, "Having fun there I see."

"Shut up." A few seconds after that, the girl pulled out a phone from Sierra's jeans along with a small purse. Halley turned the screen on and frowned. "There are a couple of missed calls from her dad."

"She just moved here," Reece remembered. "Maybe he's worried."

"No shit, Sherlock." Halley swiped the screen. "Oh, her phone isn't locked."

Well, that was convenient. "Text her dad!"

"Why?"

"Just text something like, 'I don't remember the address' or something."

She pursed her lips. "Fine... After a moment, Halley grunted. She texts weird.

The boy snapped his fingers. "Oh, make sure to copy that exactly. Or else, her dad will know that something's wrong."

"Okay, smartass Halley muttered before typing.

Barely 20 seconds passed before she suddenly stood up. "I got the address. Let's call an Uber."

-----

Reece had gone through some pretty awkward stuff in his life but carrying a girl in his arms to get into an Uber was probably one of the highlights of it.

The ride was silent. Mostly because the driver- a middle-aged man who probably wasn't prepared to witness this at 11 p.m.- was a bit scared to say anything about the fact that Reece had blood all over him or that there was an unconscious girl with him. Having Halley in the front seat probably made him think twice too.

It was a struggle to not fall asleep in the car. Reece had those fleeting moments where exhaustion crept over his eyelids and everything turned dark but he always woke up again.

It took a few moments to realize the car had stopped and Halley was pulling out her purse from the brown sling bag she had been carrying from the first time Reece saw her and paid the driver with a $10 bill before turning in her seat to face Reece.

"C'mon, loser," she said. "We're here."

----

The boy didn't really know what to expect, but it certainly wasn't this.

"Okay, you did not tell me this chick was rich!" It was a bit scary to see Halley this enthusiastic.

"That's because I didn't know she was..." His eyes scanned around him, taking in the view that was a bit hard to believe.

A mansion was the only thing that could possibly be fit to describe the building that stood in front of them because it simply was one. The walls stood proudly from a distance, its white stature looked like it was glowing in the dark of the night, but other than the shape of it, Reece couldn't see much behind the towering gates, but it was definitely enough to know that the garden was bigger than he could ever hope his house could be.

So he glanced at his partner. How do we do this?

"Relax. I know how to handle these things." Halley walked over to the right side of the gate, where a small metal box was hanging on the brick column beside. "I am here with..." she turned around to face the boy in question.

"Sierra." He answered plainly.

"I'm here with Sierra," Halley repeated to the box.

A couple of seconds passed by before the gates before them slowly moved apart, separated in the middle enough to allow enough space for them to go through. Halley didn't hesitate to step forward but Reece felt like dying as his arms were going to fall off from the weight of the girl in his arms. The boy had to be careful when he passed through the entrance, making sure that Sierra's head wasn't bashed into the bricks.

Thankfully, the pathway to the mansion wasn't too far though, by the time they arrived there, Reece had to put Sierra on the staircase first, panting as he did so.

"Jesus, you need to work out more." Halley scoffed at him from on top of the stairs, seems like she was enjoying the view from up there.

"I thought you were an atheist," he huffed out, trying to glare at her but it just probably looked like he had one too many cups at the party.

"I am, but... it's pop culture," she shrugged.

"Religion is not pop culture."

"It's not but Hollywood says otherwise. Now come on hot shot, we're almost at the door,"

The boy grunted before scooping Sierra in his arms once more, almost falling off the steps but he managed to get himself balanced. Then he continued to walk until they reached the front door.

Well, if you can call it a door. It almost looked bigger than his own house.

Halley knocked on the door loudly, being the classy lady she is as she pounded the wood with her fists repeatedly for 5 seconds straight like she was about to tear the door down. Shortly after, a small sound clicked from being the door and the wood was swung open, revealing a middle-aged woman behind it, wearing a heavy frown and her eyes were wide with disapproval.

"Knocking once is a courtesy, twice is accidental and thrice is just rude." The woman spoke in a soft manner, but there was a certain steel to her face that felt cold to hear. "I wonder which one you are."

"I'm the one that wants to open the damn door," Halley answered nonchalantly.

"Then you'd do a heck of a job at it, certainly." The woman huffed before turning her attention to the girl in Reece's arms. Her frown went deeper, something that the boy didn't think was possible, but with a grim expression that clouded her face, she waved all of them to come in.

The two of them trudged forward, and the boy heard the door close. His mouth dropped as his eyes took in the marvelous sight around him. From the ceilings that were so high that it hurt his neck to try and face up, to the massive fireplace that stood in the center of the room where a few chairs gathered around it like an organized circle, to basically everything in the house that looked like it costed more than himself. Reece struggled to wrap his mind around everything.

"Fabian," the woman's voice rang out in the house like a sharp bell. "Take Sierra to the infirmary please."

Suddenly a man came to him, his bald head and face that were covered in scars made him look like a Street Fighter character but he took the girl from Reece's arms with surprising delicacy, flashing a small but polite smile to the boy before rushing away with the girl, walking out of sight as he turned around a corner.

"You two," the woman pointed to himself and Halley. "You sit here first. I'll call for Mr. Ferrind." Then she walked away.

Halley watched as the woman's figure slowly went up a grand flight of stairs behind the fireplace and let out a sigh of relief once she was gone. "Gosh, I hate that hag. It's like she got a stick up her ass."

"Because it's not like you're any different," Reece muttered.

Halley acted like she didn't hear that. "So, what are we going to do?"

"About what?"

"About this!" she waved her hands in the air. "What do you expect to say to that chick's dad? 'Oh, sorry sir, but we poisoned you daughter and now, she's not waking up'?"

"Relax," he said, trying to ignore the pain that was still aching on his back. "I've got this."

"You've got this?" Halley scoffed. "You couldn't even lie to Miss Edgeware about your English homework and now suddenly you-"

"Shut up, he's coming." Reece immediately sat up straighter as he heard the sounds of footsteps from the staircase, though, considering the way he was right now, there wasn't really a chance for him to not look like somebody who just got mauled by a dog.

Waiting for Mr. Ferrind to appear was like introducing a Disney villain. For the next few seconds, he could only see the man's silhouette that was on the wall, growing larger and larger as he came down the steps. Somehow, that made Reece's heart raced. Something about it made his skin crawl.

When he could finally see the man, things seemed more like a movie than it was before. It really did. He was tempted to look around the room, maybe there were a few cameras around that were recording. Because he just couldn't believe the man that he was seeing now.

Mr. Ferrind was the epitome of how you'd describe somebody that looked like a part of some shady Russian mafia or those mob leaders from 'Godfather'. A black fedora was in his hands as if somehow that hat was needed even though it's night time and he was in the mansion. He wore a suit, which was equally unnecessary. Though the most disgruntling part was his face; covered in scars that ran down from his forehead to his cheeks. The plain brown hair was probably the only resemblance he held to Sierra.

But if there was one thing that was certain, Mr. Ferrind scared the soul out of Reece.

The man stared at him, only him in particular, with an intensity that made the boy want to run.

"Who are you?" Mr. Ferrind said, his voice was surprisingly high for such a brooding figure.

But it still took a few moments for Reece to find his voice. "Um... my name is Reece and her name is Halley-"

"Reece." The man stopped him. "What have you done to my daughter?"

His voice was light but every single thing about it was threatening. Reece's heart sped up as his mind lost the words he was going to say. How could he possibly lie now?

"I-I didn't do anything." That was a lie, of course. "We found her like that."

Mr. Ferrind didn't look convinced, his lips curved down into a frown. "Where?"

"At the..." Reece glanced at Halley. She saw it and caught on.

"Oh, it's 429 Addison Street," she said. "It's not far, about a mile from here.

"And how did she get there?" The man took a seat across from them, on a plush red love chair that had scratch marks along its arm, probably from a cat. His tone was still threatening but it didn't feel like they were the target.

"I don't know, sir," Reece said automatically, though he quickly backtracked when Mr. Ferrind's lips pursed. "I mean... Mikayla Evans was having a party there. I don't know if Sierra knew her-"

Mr. Ferrind scoffed. "Yes, she knew her alright. Carry on."

"We found her unconscious." Reece had to be even more careful here. "She was on the ground, somewhere around the front yard under a tree. I didn't know she was there at first, but then I saw her phone screen on. You were calling her."

"Why did you help her?" The seriousness in his voice seemed to have gone suddenly. Instead, he sounded annoyed.

"I'm sorry?"

"Why couldn't you just leave her alone? She always has these lapses anyways."

Something in Reece ticked off, perhaps it was the way that the man said it so freely without much of a thought, or perhaps it was just the fact that he was horrible enough to consider leaving his unconscious daughter alone and left to rot, but the boy couldn't bite back the words coming from his lips. "Because I consider my self-decent human being, but it seems like there isn't much to compete with, sir," the words had come out to be more scathing than he had planned to be but he couldn't find any regret in him. "Not with you around."

And Mr. Ferrind seemed to notice that as well. And for some reason, he approved. "Alright... How did you get here?"

Oh, so they weren't done with the questions? "We followed the address you sent us."

"Hm, I was under the impression that my daughter sent me that text."

"It wasn't hard to fake it."

"I see..." He pondered, his eyes were drifting off as if he was in deep thought. "So you've never met my daughter before?"

Reece and Halley shook their heads.

"Then how did you know her name?"

"By her... Instagram account." Reece quickly said.

"So you just happened to be there, at the same party my daughter was attending, and somehow managed to find her under that tree you said, then just cracked into her phone, intruded her social media accounts and faked her texts to trick me into giving you our address?"

Well... It sounded bad when he said it like that.

"Yes," Halley answered nonchalantly. "Though, we weren't there for no reason."

Mr. Ferrind turned to her, eyebrows raised. "What do you mean?"

"Well, we were on a job," she said.

Reece looked at Halley, his eyes widened with shock and his lips silently telling her to stop. But then again, since when does she ever listen to him?

"You see, Mr... Italian-man, we are not normal."

"I think you got that point across," the man muttered.

"We were hired to do something there. So, really, we weren't looking to get drunk or anything. No, this loser is way too boring for that," she pointed at Reece. "No, we were on duty. So, I hope you see that we just went out of our way to help get your daughter here safely."

Oh god, this crazy chick is going to ruin everything!

Reece watched with horror as Mr. Ferrind's eyebrows scrunch together as he stared at the both of them like he was scanning pieces of meat or those little pests that you don't know if you should kill. This stayed that way for what seemed like
