You look out at the sea of cars in the pick-up lane outside of school, but you don't see your big sister's car anywhere. She should be here, where is she? She promised that she'd be first in line to pick you up from school. You were supposed to go out for Frappuccinos, get your nails painted, and go to Barnes & Noble for new books. You've been looking forward to today since last week; especially because it's your birthday. But she's not here.

Soon, you're one of the only kids left sitting out front. Anxiety starts to gnaw in your belly. Eventually you decide to walk home. It's not too far, right? Yeah, you can totally walk home by yourself! Besides, you're seven now; that's practically a grown-up! You take a deep breath, adjust the plastic birthday tiara on your head, and look over at one of the teachers standing nearby. She's talking to a group of students. She probably wouldn't notice if you just walked away from campus right now.

You bite your lip before getting to your feet and clutching your lunchbox tighter in your hand. As you walk away from school, your heart is beating a mile a minute. Your parents always told you to never walk home. "There are bad people out there, Baby. You can't walk home alone." You can hear their warning echoing in your memory. You know they'd be upset if they found out.

"Hey! Wait!" The sudden voice from behind you makes you jump. Your heart leaps into your throat. Oh no, you think to yourself. What if they're a kidnapper?! Oh, please don't let them take me, please, please, please!! "Hey!" The voice sounds again, closer now. You shoot a fearful glance over your shoulder as you pick up your pace.

"Wait up!" A boy is jogging after you. He looks to be about a year or two older than you. This causes you to relax a bit. You stop where you are and allow him to come up beside you. "Are you going home?"

"Yeah," you reply.

"But, don't you usually get picked up? What happened?" He hoists his backpack up higher on one shoulder as he walks.

"My sister was supposed to get me today, but she didn't show up." As you think about her forgetting you, your eyes begin to fill with tears. You shake your head as you fight to keep them back. You can't cry like a baby in front of this older kid! No way!

"It's okay." The boy's voice is gentle. "I'll walk you home. Do you know where you live?"

You nod, feeling relief flood your chest. "It's a little far, though."

"Don't worry." He smiles down at you. "I walk home all the time. It's not scary."

As the two of you walk, the boy tells you about his friends, and a new video game that's supposed to come out soon. You feel a sense of calm wash over you as you continue to be near him.

"What's your name?" you ask.

"Oh, my name's Yoongi. Min Yoongi. What's yours?"

"Y/N." You smile up at him.

As you make your way through a park, a group of older boys call out to Yoongi from a nearby basketball court. "Yoongi! Let's play a pickup game!"

"I can't right now," Yoongi calls back. "I have to take her home."

Your face flushes; you can feel the heat radiate in your ears. You duck your head.

"Aww! Come on! Just a quick game!" the boys plead.

"Sorry," Yoongi replies, raising his hand in farewell. "Come on." He leads you along by the wrist.

"Sorry you couldn't play with them," you murmur.

"Nah." Yoongi says, waving his hand dismissively. "Don't worry about it. They play every day. It's no big deal."

"Okay." You bite your lip. You feel bad about dragging him away from his friends. After a moment, you shake your head. "Yoongi."

"Yeah?" Yoongi glances down at you. "What's up?"

"I... can walk the rest of the way," you say, coming to a stop.

"But didn't you say it was far?" Yoongi's brow furrows as he shakes his head. "I can walk you. I'll walk you the rest of the way. It's okay, Y/N; really."

You want to press your side of the argument, but the way Yoongi's gripping your wrist, and the way his shoulders are set lets you know his mind is made up.

As the two of you walk, your feet start to drag. Has your house always been this far? Geez! "Yeah." Yoongi's voice makes you look up. "Walking home isn't too bad. It would definitely be more fun with a group of friends, though." A small smile finds its way onto his lips. "Is today a special day? Why're you wearing that crown?"

"It's my birthday today," you reply. "Me and my sister were supposed to spend time together before we went to dinner tonight, but she..." You trail off.

"Ah," Yoongi's expression brightens, and he stops in his tracks. He quickly takes his backpack off and roots through its contents. "Close your eyes! Turn around!"

You do as you're told, covering your eyes with your hands.

"Okay, here." At the sound of Yoongi's voice, you uncover your eyes and turn to face him. He hands you a worn paperback. The pages are yellowed with age and dog-eared. "This is my favorite book. Happy birthday. Congratulations on growing another year older."

"Yoongi." You feel your face flush with happiness. "But it's your favorite book."

"It's okay," he says, smiling. "It's your birthday. Please, take it."

You beam up at him, hugging the book tightly against your chest. "Thanks, Yoongi! I promise, I'll read it every day!"

Soon, you begin to see familiar houses. "We're almost there!" You feel your heart soar as you pick up your pace. "Come on!"

You're a house away now. You cut through your neighbor's front lawn, hurrying to your front door. You look back at Yoongi as he waits on the sidewalk. After a moment, he plops down on the grass, seeming to make himself comfortable.

You ring your doorbell, smiling at your sister when she opens the door. You look back at Yoongi; he's standing again. "Bye, Yoongi!" You beam at him, waving.

"Bye," he smiles. "Happy birthday!" He starts to walk away, then stops and comes back to your sidewalk. "If you want to walk home again, let me know, okay?"

Today's your twenty-first birthday. You're currently having lunch at your favorite restaurant with your sister. As you're cutting into your chicken parmigiana, you glance up. You notice a man with mint colored hair. You make eye contact at the same instant, and a spark of recognition flickers across his face. He stands up, a smile slowly blossoming across his features.

"No way," you breathe, getting to your feet. "Yoongi?"

"Y/N? Hey!" Yoongi grins, coming to stand in front of you. "It's been so long!"

"Oh my gosh!" Without thinking, you throw your arms around him. "I can't believe it's you!"

Yoongi hugs you back, releasing you after a moment. "If my memory's right, today's a special day. Wait here." He heads back to his table, and returns with a brown bag. "Happy birthday."

"Yoongi, you didn't..." You trail off, looking up at him.

"Open it." The man in front of you grins, his cheeks turning pink as he ducks his head.

Inside the bag is a brand-new hardcover book. You open the front cover, quietly reading the inscription on the page.

Y/N—

I hope this book finds you well. Happy birthday! Have you enjoyed the other books I've left you? I hope you have a good day. I hope this year is good to you.

Your friend—
Min Yoongi

You look up at Yoongi, realization dawning on you. "The books..."

"Yeah," Yoongi smiles. "They were all me."

Every year since your seventh birthday, you have found a book in your mailbox. There was never any inscription or card or anything to go along with the books you found. You read every single one of them without fail, though.

You press your lips against Yoongi's cheek. "Thanks, Yoongi."

This was inspired by a super cute video I saw on Facebook. I hope y'all enjoyed it! Please let me know what you thought ❤️
