((It's been 3 years since I've read it geez lol a lot happens in 3 years my writing style may be different.

This scene takes place after they leave the hospital once Axel is healed. After the attacks)

Freya ran a comb through her dark hair as she brushed it out, preparing to braid it. They had retrieved what little luggage they had from the base Ace had let them stay in. Her fingers intertwined strands of hair as she created two braids down her head. Sighing and her arm tired, she walked over to the couch in the hotel they were staying in for the time being. Sitting, she held herself there, arms wrapped around herself.

And then she made the mistake of looking up and seeing the bag that belonged to Roger on the floor, and her eyes watered as tears filled them. A broken sob ripped from her throat as she lowered her head, shaking uncontrollably from the realization her grandparents and Roger were gone for good. She had been through so much and she was only 18. Her birthday had passed a few weeks ago but she didn't want to celebrate it.

Roger was gone. He wasn't coming back. The young man that had spilled his heart out to her about his life, the boy who carried her to safety when she was hurt, the guy who smiled with pride and stubbornness. She wouldn't be able to argue with him anymore.

Freya didn't hear the hotel door open and she didn't hear the groceries get set down on the counter but when the couch dipped beside her and an arm wrapped around her she leaned into the warm body beside her. One arm wrapped around her small body as she was held close.

She gasped for breath through her sobs. She couldn't look up at him. She hated people seeing her cry.

"I-I'm so-sor-sorry Ax-Axel." She managed through the tears, hiding her face in his chest. She heard him whispering soothing words, German accent prominent with them all.

"Shh, Freya. It be okay." She nodded into him as they held each other, the sun slowly sinking down out the small window.

Axel spent most of his spare time completely devoted to the English German dictionary, practicing his English. Freya would sit with him and lecture him on adjectives and conjunctions and all the grammar and they would do that until he got bored and would try to kiss her and she would push him away with a smile and go make something to eat.

She had attempted to learn German too, but she wasn't the best at all of the memorization. She knew the basics.

Axel had placed Roger's belongings in a closet. The hotel was small, and only had the one bedroom, kitchen and living space with a sofa. Sticking to her morals and ignoring the teasing look in Axels eyes, she had offered him the bed and said she would take the sofa.

He immediately refused the bed and insisted on taking the couch.

But in the middle of the night when she would gasp awake from a nightmare or cry to sleep remembering Roger, Axel would appear and lie beside her and hum or sing or speak German, what he was saying she had no idea, but she would fall asleep to it.

She would wake in the morning and turn expecting to see him, but he was a gentleman and after she would fall asleep he would return to the sofa.

Freya had gotten her grandparents inheritance after visiting the bank and other places to fill out documents. Axel didn't tag along much and if he did he kept quiet, fearful of the people who would shoot him looks due to his German.

He needed to go home.

With her grandparents money, Freya first decided they would return to her house. Then they would figure out what to do next.

Registering Axel for England citizenship would raise too many questions. She didn't want to lose him too.

Another few months passed. They made it back to Freyas grandparents house.

Swingate hadn't been too touched by the war yet. It was nearing 1943, and Russia had gotten involved. Freya and Axel had watched as the USA made plans with England, they had watched clips of Hitler on TV, portrayed as a power hungry dictator. Freya desperately hoped England and the USA and the other Allies would defeat the Nazis. But while watching those clips, she would turn and see Axel staring at the screen with pain in his emerald gaze.

She hoped his family was still out there.

Upon making it home, (she had gotten her horse Cadence back) she went to the church and greeted Evan. He had been overjoyed to see her, and he was able to meet Axel.

She returned the dictionary but he insisted they needed it more.

Agreeing to stay at her house until they had a clear plan on what to do next, and how to get Axel back to his family, the two lived side by side.

Of course, it wasnt easy.

Freya yawned, stretching out her arms as she climbed out of bed. She got dressed, did her hair, and walked out of her room. She looked down the hall to where her father's room was. Axel slept in there.

She chuckled softly, walking downstairs and out the door into the bright, morning sun. It was nearing fall but the breeze wasn't cold enough to need a jacket quite yet.

Axel enjoyed sleeping in. She'd let him. She was a morning riser.

She fed the chickens and collected a few eggs and turned, staring out to the blue water beyond the cliffs. She loved the ocean.

Walking back inside and getting greeted by her new dog, named Rain, she walked into the kitchen and laid the eggs down. Axel had gone for a walk one day and had come back with the poor little mutt, and she agreed they had to keep it. He had hugged her and given her the brightest smile he could muster while petting the dog with his right hand.

Freya cracked the eggs open and began to fry them.

This would make a good breakfast, she thought. That's all they mostly ever ate. Eggs. Bread. Rice. She wasn't the best cook.

Lost in her thoughts, she didn't hear the footsteps behind her and when a hand rested on her waist it startled her.

Freya spun around, blue eyes wide. "Axel-"

He cut her off, leaning down and kissing her. She relaxed, a hand resting on his arm as his hand caressed her face. He deepened the kiss and pressed her against the counter and she let one of her hands ruffle his black wavy hair.

Then he pulled away and grinned, walking over to the stove.

"Breakfast?" He asked, husky voice proving he hadn't been awake long.

She stared at him, her cheeks flushed. He didn't normally greet her like that.

Pastor Evan had sat down with both of them and had explained the risks of the two of them having feelings for each other and living in the same home. Well, he told Freya the importance of staying pure until marriage, and that children are indeed a blessing. But that should all come at the right time.

Then, pastor Evan pulled out a note card with German on it and looked Axel in the eye and began reading it. Freya couldn't understand most of it, but Axel strictly nodded and agreed, looking away. Whatever pastor Evan had told Axel had shook him.

She had laughed. But she took it seriously. She did love Axel. And he loved her. And they did...well, they enjoyed each other's company. But she had told Axel her boundaries and that she wasn't ready for anything. He had agreed. That is why they slept separately. And thats why she required him to let her know if he wanted a kiss. Thats why they went to church together every Sunday. Of course there had been slip ups. And Freya and Axel had talked them out.

He was a very respectful young man. Now 19, he spent most of his time farming with his one hand, fixing the house up, and other chores he could do.

"Freya?"

"Oh, sorry. Yes. Eggs for breakfast."

"Okay. We need store run?"

She shook her head. "No. We still have lots of food and supplies."

Axel nodded. He smiled and pulled her braid and then walked over to the table and sat down. He watched her as she finished cooking and made each of them a plate of eggs.

She sat in the chair next to him as they ate.

"Mmm" He grinned. She laughed.

"Axel, we eat this almost every day. I'm sick of it, I don't know how you aren't." She replied, giggling.

He just grinned. "I like it. And I love you."

"I love you too."
