Chapter 10

Jade stayed in the hospital for another two days, where she went through a series of tests that was physically and mentally draining before she could leave. The only condition of leaving was she was to be under the watchful eye of the Blackwood brothers and random checkup with doctors to see how she is doing.

"Is that necessary?" She questioned when they bought a wheelchair into her room.

"It's protocol." Rolling her eyes Jade got into the wheelchair, wanting to get out of this place as soon as she could.

Marco pushed her out while Marcus filed the last of the paperwork. Jade knew everyone was fussing way too much over her small self-inflicted wound when there were other people out there that needed more help than her.

The moment they got outside Jade stood up from the wheelchair while Marco rolled his eyes as Jade stretched and breathed in the cool crisp morning air. Being outside with the sun on her face was something she missed even if it was only for a few days.

"Come on, I want to get home," Marcus grumbled like normal, so both Jade and Marco trailed behind Marcus towards the car where the moment they both got in Marcus was speeding out of there like the devil was on his tail.

Once they got back to the apartment building, they all sat in the car in silence none of them saying anything as they were all lost in their own thoughts. However, it didn't take long for Marcus to get out the car, slamming the door, and storming up towards his apartment. Marco sighed and looked back at Jade in the back seat who looked lost inside her mind.

"Jade, we better head inside." Jade's head snapped up at the sound of Marco talking to her and she nodded before frowning wondering where Marcus went. Sighing, she got out of the car and declined Marco's help, insisting that she was fine and capable of walking by herself.

When they got to Jade's apartment she opened the door only to be greeted by the sound of loud heavy music coming from next door. She knew she would not get that nap that she wanted and needed and knew she had to keep her mind occupied for a while.

"Sorry about the loud music." Jade jumped forgetting that Marco was still here with her.

"It's fine. You should make sure he is fine." Marco shrugged his shoulders knowing his brother was fine just letting off a little frustration.

"The doctor said we can't leave you alone until the week is over, so one of us will stay with you at all times." Jade groaned and was tempted to slam her head against the wall a few times, but knew that was an unwise choice to make because all it would accomplish was a sore head and a pounding headache.

"Whatever." She waved her hands in the air not caring because all she wanted was sleep. Whatever they gave her at the hospital was making her feel drowsy and tried.

"I'm going to take a nap so if you'll excuse me." Marco nodded as Jade made her way to her room and cursed Marcus to the high heavens and back at the loud music that was coming through her thin walls.

Not in the mood to deal with it she slipped under the covers and pulled her blankets up over her head hoping it would prevent some noise that was coming through. However, the blanket did nothing as the sound of a heavy, thumping beat, thumped its way through her room threatening to rattle her bones if it got any louder.

Knowing there wasn't much she could do Jade closed her eyes and listened to the thumping sound until her eyelids became too heavy and they closed at their own will.

When Jade arose from her nap, it surprised her to hear that everything around her was silent. She was expecting to wake to noise, instead of silence wrapped around the room, the silence that she found comforting. She swung her legs off the bed and ran her hands over her face sighing at the slight pain in her left arm.

Getting up her knee cramped from being in bed for the last few days, so she rubbed it before she walked into the kitchen. Jade stopped in her tracks when she saw two large male bodies standing over her kitchen stove chatting quietly to each other as the aroma of their cooking filled the room.

"What are you doing here?" Jade said rubbing her bed head frowning wondering what the hell they were still doing in her apartment. Both Blackwood brothers turned around with Marco holding a spoon and Marcus holding a pan.

"We thought you would be hungry," Marco said as Marcus went back to the stove flipping whatever was in the pan. Jade walked over to the stove only to be gently pushed away by Marco.

"Sit, food is almost ready," Marco said so Jade sat down at the table and watched both the men walk around her kitchen as if they were in their own. Jade found it amusing watching two large army men slaving away at the kitchen cooking a meal for her.

"How are you feeling?" Marco asked as he bought over a plate of pancakes.

"Fine." She rubbed her hands over her face again before looking at the pancake bursting out into laughter at the smiley face they men had made with bacon, strawberries and cream.

"You like, my idea of course." Marcus snorted, and he bought over two more plates and set them down on the table before he joined.

"What are you doing?" Jade asked and Marcus just shrugged as he dug into his plate of food that he made.

"Eat up Jade because we are going out afterwards." Jade looked towards Marco to see if he knew anything about these plans, but this was the first Marco had heard of Marcus's plans. Jade dug into her food and kept in a moan of delight at how light and fluffy the pancakes were.

"These are amazing." Jade moaned as she shovelled more into her mouth.

"I made them. Pancakes are my kind of my thing." Marcus said as he sipped on his coffee.

"Who knew you could cook." Jade poured herself a cup of juice as she devoured the rest of her food like she had never eaten a day in her life.

"This is so much better than two-minute microwave meals." Both the boys gave her a look that she shrugged off at ate the final bit of food on her plate.

"That was absolutely amazing." She leaned back in her chair patting her very full stomach.

"I glad you enjoyed it," Marcus said as he stood up collecting his plate. Marco looked at his brother as if he grew another head at his unusual behaviour. Jade too cocked her head to the side as she watched Marcus clean up their dishes.

"Go shower and get dressed we are leaving in 10." Marcus looked up from the sink raising one eyebrow telling Jade to get her butt moving. So, she did just that, she got off her chair and walked into the bathroom. Jade took a shower minding her left arm to make sure it didn't get wet. Dressing in casual clothes as she did not understand where they were going. She grabbed her shoes before going back into the lounge room where both the brothers had cleaned up and were currently sitting on the couch chatting to themselves.

"Ready." She announced herself and they both turned before Marcus got up.

"Good, I was just about to come in and collect you." Jade shook her head at his arrogant tone before rolling her eyes and grabbing her keys and wallet.

"Well, let's go then." Marcus nodded his head and grabbed what he needed before he left with Jade out the front door leaving Marco to finish cleaning and lock up.

"So, where are we going?" Jade asked as they got into his car.

"You'll see when we get there," Jade said nothing for the rest of the 4 hours tip out of the city and into the country.

"You're not taking me somewhere to kill me, are you?" Jade questioned as they pulled up into a cozy farm.

"Nope, besides we are here." Jade all, but groaned as her butt was numb and she was tired from such a long trip. The sun was setting as they had left Sydney hours ago and looked like they were somewhere in the country, but not rural.

"Where are we?" She asked as Marcus drove into a dirt driveway towards a beautiful house.

"Dubbo. My father owned this place before he passed away. We hire people to upkeep the place and we visit at least once a year with Mum when we are in the country." Jade nodded her head having a feeling they would stay the night.

"I assume we are staying the night, however, I don't have any clothes," Marcus said nothing as he stopped the car and got out and Jade followed stretching her back getting out the kinks from sitting in the car for so long.

"My brother packed you a bag while you were sleeping. We are staying here for a few days." She went to say something, but the looked Marcus's face told her to keep quiet and just follow his lead.

Jade followed Marcus into the house and was amazed at how beautiful the place was. The dark wooden floors contrasted the light walls as the long windows allowed the afternoon light to shine through the house illuminating it, making it look like something out of a fairy tale.

"This place I beautiful." Marcus watched with a small smile on his face as Jade took in the place looking like a child who stepped into her favourite storybook.

"Marco and I re-built the place 4 years ago when we took annual leave from the service after a brutal tour." Marcus dropped the bags on the floor in the lounge room watching Jade admire the place.

"Why are we here Marcus?" She finally asked once she had finished admiring the place.

"You needed to get away from everything and this is the best place, trust me." Marcus walked towards the kitchen and Jade followed in pursuit.

"You want some dinner before we go to bed because tomorrow will be an early start with a morning run before the sun is up." Jade groaned knowing Marcus was putting her on an army schedule something she hasn't done in what felt like a long time.

"I guess I could do with some food. I can cook considering you made me food earlier." Marcus didn't say anything and gestured towards the kitchen where Jade got to work making dinner for both of them.

Jade cooked in silence and Marcus enjoyed watching her cook for him in the kitchen he built with his bare two hands. Marcus found it easy to watch Jade as she glided through his kitchen. She moved with a slight limp, and every once in a while, she would touch her bandaged arm before shaking her head and continuing her task.

"It's nothing special, you need to go shopping." Marcus knew this and was surprised that there was any food in the cupboard as Jade placed food on the kitchen counter.

"This is fantastic," Marcus said surprised that Jade could cook.

"One thing my mother insisted I learn, the only thing that came good of that women." Marcus gave her a look but didn't comment on it. After dinner they both cleaned up the mess before Marcus showed Jade to the room she would stay in.

"Thank you." Marcus put her bag at the door before leaving the room and leaving Jade alone.

Looking around the room Jade admired the beautiful room, from the rug to the high ceilings and the queen-size bed covered in a beautiful deep blue cover with white sheets poking out the top. Walking into the bathroom Jade was drawn to the pristine white claw tub sitting by the large window looking out into the beautiful paddocks that stretched for miles. So, tempted by the amazing deep bath she set the water for a temperature she liked and waited for the bath to fill before stepping in and groaning as the hot water soothed her aching muscles.

She closed her eyes while running her fingers along the top of the water. Opening her eyes Jade looked towards her left hand and bravely undid the bandage and chocked on a sob at the angry red lines running up her forearm.

No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't remember causing so much damage to herself. A few stir-strips held the wound in place and Jade knew the damage this self-infliction would leave on her already scared body. Her body was just starting to heal and there weren't as many scars as Jade thought would be left over and now she had new ones that made her feel shame for not being strong enough.

Covering her mouth tears trekked down her face at the damage she had done to herself. She cried for not being stronger enough, not being strong enough to fight the demons inside of her. She cried for her lost childhood and the years of abuse she suffered from her mother.

She stayed in the tub until her tears were dried up and the water had turned cold before she crawled into the soft bed and closed her eyes and fell asleep into a bottomless pit of darkness.
