She rode Violet at a furious pace for what seemed like an eternity. The sky was slowly dimming into dusk. Her unshed tears blinded her view as she finally pulled on her reins bringing Violet to slow trots. A small clearing with trees was ahead and she led Violet to one. She dismounted slowly and tied her to a low hanging branch.
She sat with her back against an old tree and closed her tired eyes that still burned with tears. Her cry broke the silence around her. So much anger seethed through her because Alicia got what she wanted. To turn Adrian against her.

Her mind wandered with so much that happened. She hurt. She could still feel the sting of Adrian's punishment. What was to become of her now? She could not return.
She hugged her self trying to calm herself and settling her sobs to hiccups.
The soft rumble on the ground broke her from her thoughts and she quickly looked up noticing it was Adrian on Gideon ridding towards her.

Panicking she stood. Contemplating an escape. She looked quickly to Violet and saw she was not going to make a clean escape because by then Adrian was there.

Her heart slammed in her chest. How she wanted to disappear just for the ground beneath her to swallow her up. She could not face him. She couldn't stop shaking and her breaths felt labored at the thought of him coming close. A part of her wanted to run in to his arms and another wanted to scream at him for what he did. Frustrated and conflicted with her emotions her treacherous tears burned.

She couldn't move because his gaze held her in place. She leaned on the tree for support, her shakey legs could barely hold her up.

He slowly dismounted Gideon. His eyes held hers as he slowly approached her. She was still crying and his heart just fell more to his stomach. He was disgusted with himself. His actions as of late have been deplorable. First seducing her. Then punishing her.

He stood before her.

He could see her trembling.

"Eva," he gently tilted her chin up.

Her eyes settled on his. And his heart jumped. He hurt her and it pulled at him.

He was lost in her gaze and his urges to hold her surpassed reason and good judgement.

He caressed her cheek and lowered his lips to hers. His kiss started off tender then deepened. He pressed her up against the tree and reveled in the sweetness of her lips and her warm body flushed with his. His fingers trailed her slender neck and lingered on her erratic pulse. Alarming bells rang in his head with the thought of taking her right here and now. And he was fully aware that she would not stop him. Both need and desperation for her collided and it frightened him. He would commit a horrible deed and ruin her.
He could not do that to her.

Drawing away from her he apologized and pulled her close.

He held her tightly trying to calm his rapid heart beat. Trembling he braced his arm against the tree. He looked down into her eyes for one silent moment. His thoughts one jumbled mess after another.
should he continue and let their passion run wild? Elope with her? Send her away?
He was in agony with each decision.

He closed his eyes, he shut out the view of her admiration and desire.

If he continued this they would both suffer. He was going to marry Alicia. He could not hurt either of them.

"Eva...we can't continue this way," he whispered still breathing heavily.

"This is not healthy for neither of us," he looked down into her face.

He pulled her close not wanting to see those eyes. They weakened him. She weakened him.

Oh God! How do I do this?

He struggled with these last few words with regret.

"We must put distance between us," he whispered.

With a gasp, she pulled away.
Hurt and disbelief evident in her stare.
"You would send me away," she whimpered.

His silence was her answer.

She turned away from him ignoring his call to her. And quickly mounted Violet. She rode off toward the manor.
Adrian hot on her trail.

Violet flew across the clearing with a pace that blurred the landscape before them. In no time she pulled up to the stables before her rider jumped off her back and stomped off toward her home.

Gideon followed and Adrian wasn't far off trailing behind her.

He ran after her and caught her around the waist in the foyer. Lightly he carried her struggling in his arms towards the library. He entered and locked the door still holding her tight in his arm.

Her struggles stopped and she sagged against him. Her cries were barely audible. Her back flushed against his chest, he rested his forehead on her head.

"Please don't send me away," she pleaded between sobs.

"I must," his voice was hoarse with his emotional restraint.

He pulled away from her. Giving his back to her he stood trembling regretting his decision. He was in turmoil.

He needed an escape. He needed something to numb his senses.

He searched for words as he walked to the nearby table that held a large glass pitcher with whiskey, he poured himself one with shakey hands. Convincing words. For himself. For her. It's what he needed.

"Its for the best Eva," he said softly.

"For whom?" She cried.

"You said we would never be apart. And you broke that promise," she yelled.

He turned to look at her.

He looked away because it was true.

"You can't send me away," she walked furiously before him.

"The decision is already made," he shook his head refusing to give in.

Furiously she yanked the pitcher out of his reach in a tight grip.
Her eyes filled with tears as her temper rose and Adrian watched as she tightened her grip on the glass pitcher.

"I won't go," she blurted out.

He gritted his teeth.
"Yes, you are going,"

"No, I won't,"

This is why he needed to send her away. Everything about her consumed him with desire. Defiantly she fought him but none of it changed the hunger he felt for her. And it grew like wildfire to dry land.

Grateful that the table stood between them, Adrian tried to will his body to relax, but every muscle tensed with agony.

He gave her a stern look.
"Hand over the pitcher, Eva,"

He walked around the table but quickly she scrambled away.
"I'll break it ." Her voice rasped, and tears spilled from her shining eyes down her face.

He leaned his palms on the table and braced himself.

"You don't understand the great lengths it is taking me to do this Eva. I don't want this to happen either but we can no longer stay under the same roof," he breathed.

She shook her head.
Not understanding reason.
"But I want to stay here. With you," she cried.

In two strides he was around the table facing her. In a heart beat he pulled the pitcher from her hand and backed her up against the book case with his stare.
"What part of any of this do you not understand Eva?"

He took the steps that separated them and stared down at her, his eye's dark.
Her pulse fluttered at an alarming rate.
"Having you close to me isn't safe, Eva," he swallowed hard.

"You won't harm me," she whispered.

She looked at him with so much trust. She was breathtaking, innocent and naive to the sexual web she created around him.

His look grew hungry, lustful and she shuddered.
He glided his fingers down her neck and over her collar bone to her sides brushing the outer part of her breast. He left her breathless when he jerked her flush against his body.

"When will it set in that your not safe? " he brushed his lips over hers sweetly.

"When the need is too great and we give into our desire?" He kissed her ear.

She began to breath heavily.

"When I have you in my bed?" he whispered in her ear.

She closed her eyes the images that formed in her mind made her warm all over.

He held her cheeks gently in his hands. He looked deep in to her eyes with a saddened look. Such adoration, and desire was evident in her stare.

"What we feel for one another isn't right. I'm your guardian and I swore to protect you. And I will fulfil that promise. I will marry Alicia. And you will go on living your life, peach."

Like a bucket of cold water was poured over her, she stiffened.

Hurt and heartbroken she shoved him away and stepped back.

"I hate you!," she whispered.
Quiet filled the room as they stood staring at each other.

"Don't bother waiting too long to send me away. The sooner I leave the sooner I will be far away from you," she yelled.

She had never ever said those words before to him. They pierced his heart. He looked at her. It was evident in his features that those words hurt him. He would have preferred insults or curses but never those words.

The whiskey by now addled his thinking but it did not numb his pain. He was glued to the spot with her stare then she stormed off.
