|| Chapter 12 ||

Once I'm back outside I look for the large group of people circled around one of the trees in the backyard. Olivia is on Sebastian's shoulders as she tries to tie the piñata around a branch.

"Babe, you have to loop it through the hole not around it!" Sebastian exclaims exasperatedly.

"Shut the fuck up, I'm trying, sorry I wasn't in the Boy Scouts," she argues back, clearly frustrated with Sebastian's impatience.

I stop next to Charlotte and Jackson, still staring at the entertaining couple, "How long have they been at it?"

Jackson glances at his watch, "About ten minutes." Charlotte laughs.

"Sounds like them," I shrug moving through the mini crowd, "Oi! You two, hurry up we don't have all day!"

"Does it look like we're having a picnic here?" Olivia snaps, glaring down at me.

"I don't know what you're doing, but you're taking too damn long."

Isaac stops next to me, "So this is your family?"

"Pretty much," I shrug, "This is my sister Charlotte," Charlotte waves with a bright smile, "Over on the patio is my other older sister Sophie," I point out Sophie, who is seems to be having a fun time talking to all the adults, "and that little one is my younger sister Maddie," Maddie is sitting under a tree listening to music on her iPod, "and this idiot is my older brother Sebastian who is also Sophie's twin."

"Damn, that's a lot of kids," his eyes are wide as they travel between each sibling.

"And Harry, he's the oldest but he couldn't get down here in time," Charlotte informs him and his eyes go wider. "Do you have siblings?"

"Nope, only child," he grins.

"Aw, that must be so lonely," Charlotte pouts a little before turning back to me, "Did you hear that Harry is bringing Natalie home?"

"Uh yeah I've heard, mom hasn't stopped talking about it since he called. My question is how are we going to keep him shut up?" I ask her, gesturing to Sebastian who has now resorted to jumping up and down with Olivia on his shoulders.

"Tie him to a tree in the backyard?" She suggests with a bright smile.

"No, last time I did that he just used the rough bark to sever the rope," I grumble in reply, annoyed. It still took him a few hours but to say I was disappointed that he even got out of it was an understatement.

She nods her head absentmindedly, "We could always tie him up and leave him in the attic?"

"No, I've done that before, he fell over and made loud thumps which gave it away," I shake my head in disappointment.

Charlotte purses her lips in thought, "The basement?"

"Its a movie room now so we'll definitely use it while she's here." I stare at the back of Sebastian's head for a few seconds, "Why don't we just leave him at Olivia's? I'm sure Johnathan wouldn't mind."

"Shit, how often do you tie your brother up?" Isaac asks with wide eyes.

"Only when he's being an idiot," I reply calmly. A squeal catches our attention and we all turn in time to see Olivia fall backwards off of Sebastian's shoulders. He's staring down at her with wide eyes and a sheepish smile on his face.

Charlotte leans across me to look at Isaac, "Which is pretty much all the time."

"I could always find something on him? Blackmail?" Jackson suggests with a relaxed smile on his face.

"Blackmail?" Isaac's mouth drops open.

"No, I've got a ton on him already, unless he murdered someone, I have everything."

Charlotte looks over at Jackson with a fond smile, "Do you still work for Izzy?"

Jackson shrugs, putting his hands in his pockets, "Only when I can, she hasn't needed any information on her friends in a few months."

"Who's Izzy?" Isaac asks clearly confused about this whole conversation.

"Isabella Rosa, the baddest bitch out there," I reply in a dream-like voice.

"Is she like, in the mafia or something?"

"We're not entirely sure," Charlotte glances at Jackson and I, "I definitely wouldn't be surprised if she was though."

"One time, she complimented my technique on how I slashed that girls' tires in my freshman year, I've been obsessed with her ever since."

"She threw a hairdryer at me once, I needed three stitches," Charlotte tells him cheerfully and even shows him the scar on her arm.

"Damn, I do not want to mess with this woman," Isaac puts his hands up in mock surrender.

"Okay people! The piñata is ready," Sebastian yells out causing cheers to erupt around the backyard. "I rate since it's Drew's party that he gets first swing."

"What the hell, no! If Drew hits it first then its going to break open," I argue moving to stand next to Drew.

Drew shrugs, nodding his head in agreement, "She's not wrong."

I look over my shoulder at him, "Okay, no need to be cocky." He grins in response giving me a cheeky wink.

"Fuck, I knew we should have gotten another piñata," Sebastian grumbles to Olivia.

"Fine, then Drew can do the last swing and break it open, happy?" Olivia asks, looking at Drew for confirmation and when he nods his head with a laugh everyone starts lining up.

"Okay but the Hayes siblings have to go at the end too, that's only fair," Jesse says, picking up the bat.

"What? I bought the damn piñata!" Sebastian argues as Charlotte and I come to stand next to him.

"And I've also seen you swing a bat, there's a reason you were the captain of the baseball team Seb. And we all know about Charlotte and Tessa kicking the Westview guys' asses at that party you threw a few years back, I was there," Jesse comments looking back and forth between the three of us.

"Fine but at least let Maddie have the first swing, she doesn't do any batting sports," I reason with Jesse and a bunch of other teens nod their heads in agreement since she is the only kid here.

"Maddie!" Charlotte yells but Maddie still has her earphones in so she can't hear her.

Drew starts walking over to her, "I'll grab her."

"She listens to him more than the rest of us, I think she has a crush," I tell Charlotte and Olivia with a teasing grin on my face.

Drew talks to Maddie for a few minutes and she at first shakes her head but when he bends down and pulls her up she laughs and takes off her earphones as they come closer.

"You get first honors Munchkin," Sebastian hands her the bat and everyone takes a couple steps back getting out of the swing range.

She stares at the bat for a few seconds before looking over at us. The three of us give her a little nod of encouragement which seems to ease her as she gears up to smack the piñata. Jesse puts the blindfold over her eyes and spins her for a few seconds. He then positions her in front of the piñata and tells her to whack it.

She pulls the bat back, holding onto it tightly with both hands and swings as hard as she can. The resounding thump startles everyone as we look at the tear in the piñata. It's a small tear but a tear nonetheless.

"Holy shit," Sebastian breathes quietly in shock. Maddie lowers the bat and slowly takes off the blindfold looking at the dent she made in it.

"I thought you said that she doesn't play batting sports?" Mateo calls out, looking at the piñata in disbelief.

"I don't," Maddie tells him straight.

"We probably should have factored in that she's a black belt in karate," I say, nodding my head at her work.

"Oh come on!" Jesse whines. "You damn Hayes siblings are like freaking aliens, ridiculous," he mutters pulling the bat out of Maddie's hands.

"No need to be a baby about it," Maddie snaps, walking over to us and my mouth drops in a surprised laugh.

Jesse's eyes are wide as he looks down at the ten year old, "I'll pray for everyone when you're a teenager because you are going to be a bitc-."

"Okay Jesse, back off," I threaten.

"Just saying," he smirks.

"I'm so offended," Maddie pouts mockingly.

"Maddie, don't encourage the drama," Sebastian sighs, putting his arms around her shoulders pulling her back.

"Just saying," she grins sarcastically at Jesse who stands there quietly not knowing how to deal with her.

"Mads, why don't we go get some food?" Sebastian suggests, walking her away from everyone.

"She's terrifying," Jesse states, pointing at me. "How old is she now?"

"She just turned ten," Charlotte tells him with a small grimace, embarrassed by Maddie's behavior.

"Well damn," Mateo replies, picking up the bat, "Blindfold me, Jess." Once everyone that wanted to take a swing at the piñata does, its only us siblings and Drew left.

Charlotte walks up to the piñata gripping the bat. Olivia puts the blindfold on her and starts spinning her really fast. "If you keep spinning me like that, I will chunder on you," Charlotte laughs.

Sebastian and Maddie had come back a few minutes ago but this time Maddie had a plate piled with food and she's sitting on the grass with a smile on her face as she eats. Drew is sitting next to her, stealing a couple potato chips off her plate. Every time Sebastian tries to take something off her plate, she smacks his hand. Yup, someone definitely has a crush.

I turn my attention back to Charlotte just in time to watch her swing the bat and break off a piece of the piñata but not make it completely break apart. She smiles and turns around handing the bat to Sebastian.

"We really should have gotten two piñatas," Sebastian comments as he stares at the piñata in thought until Olivia places the blindfold over his face giving him a kiss. "Kinky," he smirks and a bunch of us groan in response.

"We'll do two piñatas at Tess's graduation," Drew says, wrapping an arm around my shoulder and pulling me closer to him. I try not to smile as he puts his head on top of mine.

Sebastian smacks the piñata, but clearly he reined himself in a bit because it doesn't break off entirely but it is now dangling precariously as a couple pieces of candy fall out of the rip. "Tess, your turn." He throws the bat straight at me and I catch it in one hand and move out of Drew's hold. I stand in front of the piñata and twirl the bat a couple times with one hand. "Stop showing off and smack it!"

I glare over my shoulder at Sebastian as Olivia places the blindfold over my eyes. Once I'm blindfolded I twirl the bat one more time but as I catch it, I grip it with my other hand and swing it into the piñata with less force than I could have given it, but only because I want Drew to be able to hit his own piñata at least once.

A couple pieces of candy fall out onto the ground. I hand Drew the bat and move out of the way so that he can hit it. "Bring it to the ground Drew!" Jesse yells out making the group of teens around us cheer.

A few of the parents had stopped talking and were leaning on the edge of the patio, watching us all. My mom is standing in my fathers embrace with her hand on his chest as she leans her head on his shoulder, laughing with him about something. Sophie is standing next to them, giving me a thumbs up. Even Drew's mother is standing at the railing with the faintest smile on her face at watching her son having fun.

Drew takes off his suit jacket and drops it on Maddie's head with a mischievous grin. Olivia ties the blindfold over his eyes and spins him around a few times. Drew plants his feet and swings the bat into the half-destroyed piñata, breaking it off the rope and bringing it to the ground as the candy falls all around the tree.

"Yes!" Everyone cheers as a few people dive for the candy, and by a few people I mainly mean Sebastian and Olivia.

Drew moves out of peoples way a wide smile on his face the entire time and comes to a stop in front of me, "Sour Patch Kids?" He offers out a small bag that he had grabbed from the ground.

"Score! You're the best," I grin up at him as I rip into the bag, shoving a couple in my mouth and then offering him some.

"Let's take a walk," Drew says randomly grabbing my arm and pulling me away from everyone else.

"What's up?" I ask, taking a seat on the ground, gesturing for him to sit next to me.

"How are you doing?" he asks as he sits down next to me.

"Me? It's your graduation," I chuckle, leaning back on my hands.

"I know, and in two months I'll be heading off to D.C.," he trails off.

"Yeah but two months is far away," I say, staying optimistic.

"Tess," he starts and looks at me. He looks like he wants to say something but decides against it.

"Drew, you don't need to worry about me, I'll be fine, and you'll kick ass in D.C., cool?" I am not in the right mindset for getting sappy.

He nods his head unsure. "It's weird how we've been friends for two years yet it feels like I've had to deal with your pain in the ass forever," he chuckles when I shove him over.

"Tell me about it, I'm surprised you've lasted this long," I grin at him, lying down on the grass.

"I can't believe you're in a dress," he chuckles, pulling the maroon dress down since it had ridden up when I laid down.

My arm is covering my eyes, "Shut up, my mom made me wear it. At least I got the denim shirt though, so it doesn't look too girly."

"God forbid anyone actually thought you were a girl," he teases and I reach out my arm blindly and smack him. "Ow."

"Don't be a baby," I move my arm and look up at him.

He's staring down at me silently with an unreadable expression on his face. The silence is tense and I'm not entirely sure what is going on. "Tess, I-."

"Time for cake!"

"Oh thank God, I'm starving," I sit back up and Drew moves out of my way, so that I can get to my feet. He's still sitting on the grass when I look back down at him, "You coming?"

He stares at the ground for a few moments before a smile graces his face, "Yeah, I'm starving."

"Well then let's go feed the beast," I poke his stomach and wrap an arm around his waist, leading him in the direction of the patio.
