I woke up one night to a frightening sound.

A door opening when I'm home alone.

Instinctively, I hid under the bed and prayed that whoever had entered wouldn't find me.

"Jenna, Mommy's home!"

Despite the friendly tone, I was still scared. It was the middle of the night! I wasn't expecting her home yet, and what if it wasn't even her?

I wasn't sure what would happen if the mystery woman found me, but I didn't plan on letting that happen. Maybe they just wouldn't see me? After all, I was tired. I didn't want to have to fight.

There was rustling from downstairs, then the sound of steps up them.

My heart was racing and my breathing was unsteady. It was hard to keep quiet as the steps got closer to the door. Luckily, though, she passed right by. I sighed in relief, but was still anxious as I listened to her enter the bedroom across the hall.

She was talking to herself, something about the babysitter leaving early. Everyone knows that bad things can happen when the babysitter leaves early.

The sick feeling in my stomach returned when I heard her leave her room and put her hand on the door knob to mine.

I watched in horror and anticipation as she opened the door and soft, yellow light from the hall bathed the dark scene in front of her. Her face paled as the bloody, mangled corpse of her only child was illuminated in the middle of the room.

I plugged my ears when she screamed, not caring that my bloody hands where dirtying my face.

I hoped that she would just take her daughter and leave soon so I could get my knife back from the other side of the room and leave.

Even though Jenna was only ten, it had taken a lot of energy to fight her down, and I didn't want to have to do the same to her Mom.
