What if....Lucas hasn't seen Max in years only to find out she is with someone else? (Angst) (Picks up from chapter fourteen)

********************

Max cries while she packs her last bag, not even worrying about organizing her clothes, just throwing them into the suitcase and stuffing them inside, closing the zipper on the suitcase. She angrily wipes her tears away, her standing up and grabbing her other bag to get her bathroom things.

She has never made a rash decision like that before. Max cannot say that she loves Paul but he is a genuine guy, he's innocent. She knows he knows no clue of what happened in her past nor will she tell him all the details but she knows he deserves an explanation. She feels incredibly guilty, now she has to share the news with him and plus her heart feels so heavy when it comes to Lucas.

He has...definitely changed, she didn't see the same caring man a few hours ago when he took her against the wall. She can see it in his eyes, she still loves him and he still loves her but that was pure anger, that was rage and that was a need of showing her exactly how he felt all of these years of not seeing her. It makes her feel betrayed, but at the same time she cannot get mad at Lucas for it, she caused his anger.

So she only feels more guilt.

"Max I'm back!" Paul says while making his way inside of the apartment, closing the door behind him with red roses in his hand.

"Paul I need to talk to you—"

"Okay before you do I just want to say I'm sorry." Paul says. "I got on the defense way to quickly I didn't consider that maybe this Lucas broke your heart as to why seeing him made you down so I'm sorry that I got mad."

"No Paul that isn't what it is he didn't break my heart." Max shakes her head.

Paul looks at the suitcase and bag that she holds, seeing her eyes red and her cheeks flushed. "Max? What's going on?"

"Paul I'm..." Max starts, swallowing the lump in her throat. "...I'm moving back in with my mother."

Paul gives a look of confusion. "What?! Max please we can talk this out I'm sorry for getting mad I—"

"It isn't you Paul!" Max says with a angered gesture. "It's me." She looks down.

"Then I'm here for you Max—"

"I cheated on you." Max deadpans, Paul's eyes widening. "I cheated and...I never meant to hurt you but I did and...now I have to go."

Paul's mouth just opens before it closes, his eyes prickling with tears. He just throws his hands up, him nodding his head. "You cheated on me with Lucas."

Max swallows again, her looking over to the side. "I never meant to hurt you Paul. I'll go on and go."

"So what that's it? You're just going to tell me you're cheating and just leave?" Paul says.

"What else do you want me to do Paul? I betrayed your trust." Max throws up her hands.

"We can work through it!" Paul begins to cry. "What you don't want to work through it?"

Max purses her lips a little. "Paul look you're....you're a great guy, and you deserve someone that's...not going to lead you on."

Paul looks at her with a sad bewildered expression. "So all of this time you have just been...leading me on? That's what you are saying?"

Max swallows a little, trying to hold back her tears, gripping her suitcase harder. "I'll go on and go."

"I cared about you you know!" Paul says when she makes it to the door, Max stopping in her tracks. "I had plans for us, I really did. And the fact that you don't want to work this out...shows me you never felt the same."

Max clenches her jaw, her closing her eyes and some tears leaving her. "Goodbye Paul." She croaks before she leaves out of the apartment, closing the door behind her and leaving Paul to throw the flowers hard on the wall.

Max goes to her car, putting her suitcase and bag in the backseat of the car before she gets into the drivers side, beginning to drive to Susan's house. She cries hard while she does, her occasionally punching the steering wheel while cursing herself.

When she pulls up she quickly goes to the door, knocking on it. Susan immediately answers, stepping to the side to let Max come in. "Baby what's going on?" Susan questions while closing the door, looking at Max in concern.

Max feels herself breathing heavier while she cries. "Mom I messed up I messed up so bad I messed up I messed up!"

"Okay calm down." Susan cradles her face, Max beginning to take deep breaths. "Breathe baby, breathe." She says, Max eventually calming down after a few minutes. "Okay I'll bring your stuff in and you go take a hot shower to calm down okay? I'm going to make some hot coco and we'll talk."

Max nods her head, wiping the tears from her eyes. She goes to hug Susan, Susan hugging her back tightly and rubbing her back. "Thank you."

"You're welcome sweetie." Susan pulls away after a minute. "Whatever it is we'll get through it."

Max nods, her going to get her bag with her bathroom things before taking a quick shower, her seeing some of her night clothes when she makes it out. She lightly smiles, going to put on the night pants and the simple T shirt before making her way out of the bathroom, putting her clothes on the hamper in the laundry room.

"Okay." Susan sets down two mugs on the table in front of the couch, her and Max going to sit down on it. Max has one of her legs tucked under her, her body turned to Susan while Susan has her legs crossed with her body turned to Max, her elbow leaning on the top of the couch. "So what happened Max?"

Max gets done sipping a little on her hot coco, her putting it back down on the table. "I slept with Lucas."

Susan's eyes widen. "Lucas...as in Lucas Sinclair?" She questions, Max nodding her head. "He's here in town?"

Max nods her head. "I saw him when I went out eating with Paul to a restaurant. He confronted me and...I just tried to avoid him then...he came over to the apartment and...I slept with him."

"Oh Max..."

"I know I feel so bad! I already told Paul what happened he already knows." Max says.

Susan rubs her face a little with her hand. "He's mad. For you not talking to him all of these years?"

Max nods her head while tears escape her. "He's different mom, I've never seen him like this before. He's so different." She cries. "I know I messed up Paul didn't deserve that which is why I gave him the truth before I left."

"Did you give Lucas the truth?" Susan questions.

Max nods. "I did tell him why I decided to not talk to them."

"And did he understand?"

Max shakes her head with a light shrug. "Maybe...maybe not I don't know he really didn't say. But he's angry mom, he's angry with me."

Susan nods her head, a little sigh escaping her. "You need to make it right Max, you need to make it right to everyone." Susan mentions. "Those friends of yours are loyal friends, Lucas is loyal. I'm not demeaning Paul but you don't love Paul Max, you never did, and it was wrong to string him on like you did."

Max nods her head in understanding, her looking down while hugging herself.

"I presume Paul was upset?" Susan questions making Max nod her head. "You need to talk with him, you need to talk with your friends and you need to talk with Lucas baby. Each and everyone of them deserve an explanation. Only then will you feel better. We can't change the past, no need to wallow in your sorrows the only thing you can do is move forward and figure out what to do from here, but you need to make it right Max."

Max nods her head, leaning the side of her head on top of the couch. "You're right."

Susan smiles softly at her, stroking her face a little. "We'll get through it sweetie, it was a mistake I've made plenty of those. We'll get through it, because I am going to be here with you every step of the way with it."

Max cries while nodding her head, her going to hug Susan. "Thank you mom, I love you so much."

"You're welcome baby, I love you too, so much." Susan responds back, hugging her tightly. "Now you can make it right tomorrow. Tonight let's pop in a movie and critic it, you hungry?"

Max shakes her head. "Not really."

"Actually forget I asked you always like to starve yourself when you're sad." Susan comments making Max roll her eyes. "I'll call the pizza place and order our usual, you can get our drinks and the movie ready."

Max smiles at Susan. "Thank you mom."

Susan smiles back at her. "You're welcome baby."

"Chocolate or vanilla?" Sue questions while she looks at the cakes.

Lucas has his hands in his pockets, looking around the different cakes. "Chocolate but these chocolate cakes look dry so I feel we'll be better off with vanilla."

"Yeah seriously these cakes are dryer then Lucas jokes." Erica says while looking at the cakes.

Lucas just looks at her. "Always have to say something."

"It's a reflex, can't help it." She shrugs simply.

"Guys it's vacation time not bickering time." Charles says. "But I am in the mood for vanilla cake."

"Oh buttercream icing!" Sue says. "You can never go wrong with buttercream icing."

"And whoever wins game night tonight can have the biggest piece." Charles says, picking up a cake.

"Then prepare to be schooled." Erica points at all of them.

"Hey Lucas!"

Lucas turns around, seeing Paul stomp over to him. "Who's that?" Sue questions.

"He looks pissed." Erica comments.

"So you just come here to have sex with my girlfriend is that it?!" Paul questions madly.

"What?! What's going on here?!" Charles questions.

"Paul." Lucas says, his hands still being in his pockets. "There's a lot of history with me and Max."

"Max?!" They all exclaim in shock.

"You're probably just some lame sick prick that broke her heart!" Paul yells.

"That would be on the reverse side." Lucas comments simply. "Listen man I want no quarrel with you, but cut your lost, you were only a means to an end."

Paul clenches his jaw hard, him going to punch Lucas. Lucas face turns to the side, him wiping the little blood off of his bottom lip.

"Who the hell do you think you are?!" Sue yells.

"Yeah big mistake buddy." Erica mentions simply with her arms crossed.

Lucas slowly looks back at Paul, him quickly catching Paul's wrist when he tries to punch him again and Lucas landing a hard punch to Paul's face, making Paul fall to the floor. Lucas grabs Paul by his shirt, slamming him down on a nearby table.

"Lucas stop!"

"Lucas!"

"Stop!"

Lucas lands another hard to Paul, him about to land another one before Charles pulls him away.

"You stupid son of a bitch!" Paul tries to run towards him but a man pulls him away. "You know what have her! Have her she's just a slut!"

"THE HELL YOU JUST SAY?!" Lucas booms out while trying to get free from Charles.

"You all need to leave!" The lady says loudly.

"Come on man." The man tells Paul, them going over to the door.

"Say that again Paul! Fucking say it again!" Lucas yells.

"Lucas calm down!" Charles tells him. They all make their way out of the store, Charles turning him around. "Lucas what the hell was that?!"

"Max?! As in Max Mayfield?!" Sue exclaims. "You slept with her?!"

"When did she get here? I thought she was in Montana." Erica comments.

"Yes!" Lucas yells. "I slept with her!"

"Lucas!" Charles scolds.

"Did you know she had a boyfriend?!" Sue questions.

Lucas chuckles a little while shaking his head. "That asshole isn't her boyfriend."

"He seemed pretty pissed and he called Max his girlfriend so." Erica shrugs. "Pretty sure he is, or was."

"So you slept with Max....knowing she had a boyfriend?!" Sue questions.

"That isn't right son." Charles shakes his head.

"You know what isn't right?!" Lucas yells. "Her ghosting me! That isn't right! And yes despite how angry that makes me I am not going to just sit there and let him say that she is a slut!"

"By acting like a maniac and punching him?!" Sue exclaims. "Okay everyone get in the car."

"I'm going to walk." Lucas comments.

"No you're not. Your ass is getting in the car." Sue says.

"Mom—"

"Boy as long as you are under my roof you are under my rules! Get in the damn car!" Sue says.

Lucas sighs in annoyance, him going over to the car and going to get inside of it, closing the door behind him. They all get in the car, Charles beginning to drive.

"When did you see her?" Sue questions.

"Last night." Lucas answers. "A few days ago I saw her at the restaurant."

"Wow that must have been awkward." Erica says.

"Erica!"

"Just the facts!"

"So you just went over there to sleep with her?" Sue throws her hands up.

"I went over there to get an explanation because she didn't give me one! From there things happened. The guy meant nothing to her!"

"Still Lucas that doesn't justify what you did! It isn't right to cheat nor help the other party cheat!" Sue mentions back.

Lucas just rolls his eyes before he just stays silent. Yeah he knows it was wrong but he has no regrets whatsoever about it, he cares less about Paul and his feelings.

When they make it to the hotel they all go to their rooms, Sue and Charles going into their room and Sue taking out her contact book, beginning to dial a number.

"Hello?"

"Susan?" Sue questions. "This is Sue. Sue Sinclair."

"How are you Sue?"

"I'm good." She replies. "I assume you know why I'm calling."

"I do. When's a good time to meet?"

She and Charles look at each other, them letting out a little sigh.

"As soon as possible."

~

"I'm going to get a shower." Max mentions, holding her clothes in her hand.

"Okay sweetie." Susan says, Max making her way into the shower. Susan goes into the kitchen, putting all of the tea into the cups and setting them all down on the table, hearing the doorbell ring after a minute. Susan goes to the door, opening it to reveal Sue Charles Erica and Lucas.

"Hey Susan." Sue goes to give her a hug.

"Hello!" Susan smiles while hugging her back. "It's been a minute."

"Yes it has." Sue nods.

"Come on come on in." Susan stands to the side, then making their way inside. "I have tea right there if any of you wants any."

"Thank you." Charles says, him and Sue going to sit down on the couch and grabbing a cup of tea, Erica and Lucas standing next to each other.

"I thought you and Max moved to Montana." Lucas says.

"We did but we wanted to be by the beach but we didn't want to go back to California, brings up to many bad memories." Susan says back, her eyes going to Lucas. "I do apologize though for....it all."

Lucas puts his hands in his pockets. "Never meant to cause trouble for you or Max."

"But some things were caused." Susan says back.

"Susan we're...Jesus we didn't even know what was going on." Sue says.

"Me neither, by the way." Erica raises her hand.

"I know you all didn't. What happened wasn't right by both parties. By you and my daughter included." Susan says to Lucas.

"What did I do wrong?" Lucas points at himself.

"You made a guy feel horrible about himself by having sex with his girlfriend." Susan mentions matter of factly.

"Lucas you should have stopped it or never initiated it in the first place." Sue says.

"Jesus this is so awkward." Erica says to herself.

"Mom do you know where..." Max trails off when she rounds the corner, her eyes widening when she sees them, more so Lucas. Her hand is on the wall while she stares at them, turning back to Susan. "Mom what...what is this?"

"This is making it right sweetheart, this is what needs to happen." Susan says back.

"Hello Max." Sue greets.

Max gives a tight lip awkward polite smile. "Hi...misses Sinclair."

"Well this is now more awkward." Erica states.

"Erica!"

"Just the facts!"

Max looks at Lucas, him just having his jaw clenched before he looks besides him, rolling his tongue in his mouth, something she sees him doing pretty much all of the time. Max turns back to look at Sue and Charles. "I...assume you all know what happened."

"Yeah we do." Sue says back. "Could you explain why...you decided to stop talking to Lucas?"

Max crosses her arms in a hugging manner. "I was doing worse then I was when I left I was....struggling." She starts. "I saw how the others were moving on and I didn't want to be a hinderance to them so...I stopped talking to them. I just didn't want to be the reason for their sadness and if them officially being happy and them moving on meant me stopped talking to them then..." she trails off. "That was my mindset."

Sue and Charles look at each other, them sighing. Erica only just raises her eyebrows in a okay manner while leaning on the wall with her arms crossed, Lucas just clenching his jaw harder.

"I never meant to hurt anyone." Max shakes her head.

"Okay well you did Max." Sue says back. "You have no idea of the shit I had to deal with when it comes to this boy. Fights, underaged drinking and I'm pretty sure it's some other things I don't even know!"

"Lucas hasn't been the same." Charles shakes his head.

Max swallows a little. "I never meant to hurt your son." She mentions while looking down.

"Okay why are you both putting all the blame on her?!" Erica says.

"Erica!"

"No seriously yes Max you did break my nerdy brothers heart and I'm mad at you for that because yes he's a nerd but he's still my brother but at the same time I understand why you did what you did." Erica reasons. "She was doing it to protect them and the kindness of her heart. Was it the right choice No but understand why she did it not what."

The room falls silent, all of them glancing around with the exception of Max and Lucas, Max catching Lucas eyes every now and again, but him mostly looking down with crossed arms.

"Great now it's awkward again." Erica throws her hands up.

"I don't take cheating kindly Max." Sue shakes her head. "I've been cheated on and it's not a good feeling."

"Dad you cheated on mom?!" Erica exclaims.

Charles rolls his eyes. "No Erica she's regarding to past boyfriends."

"Boyfriends?" Erica questions with raised eyebrows. "You had boyfriends?"

"Erica!"

"I was just curious Jesus!"

"The boy probably feels heartbroken." Charles says.

"And Lucas was heartbroken too." Sue says. "And that doesn't even get into Mike Dustin Will and Eleven, they were heartbroken too."

Max nods her head, her wiping away her tears. "I know I messed up and I understand you alls anger. I would be angry too if I was on the opposite end. It was never my intention to hurt anyone but I know did so...I'm sorry. I am. Especially you Lucas, I'm so sorry."

Lucas eyes her for a minute, her having to look away after a few seconds because his piercing gaze is intense, she can still see the anger inside of them. After a minute Lucas goes over to the door, him leaving out of it and shutting it behind him.

Max feels herself cry harder, hugging herself more while Susan goes over to her, Max leaning her head on her chest.

"He's just going to need time." Charles says.

"Oh screw time he didn't sleep with you for nothing." Erica says before she goes over to
