ISLA

"Mom?" I asked from the door of her room.

She looked up at me.

"I need to go to the mall to get a dress for—"

"Thank God," she exclaimed jumping up. "I've been waiting for this day. Be ready in five minutes, go get your sisters too. I'll tell Will to bring the car around."

I stood at the door.

"Go!"

I quickly got Emma and Anna and we headed downstairs to the car. My mom floored her car and we headed off.

"So," my mom said, as we were looking at dresses. "Are you going to Semi with Mia?"

"One, I'm surprised you remember her name and two yes I am."

"She asked you?" she asked.

I shook my head. "I asked her."

"How'd you do it?" Emma asked.

"With a poster in front of our friends," I said.

"What did it say?" Anna asked.

"It said 'I know we're not straight so we you be my date?'"

My mom smiled. "That's cute."

"Really?" I asked incredulously.

"Yeah," my mom said. "Your father always had a way with words it looks like he passed that on to you."

I smiled grimly and turned back to the dresses.

"We should buy some dye," my mom said and ruffled my hair. "Your roots are showing."

I reached up to touch my dyed hair. "I kinda forgot about this."

"It looks nice on you," she said. "Does Mia like it?"

"She loves it."

"Maybe she'll love this too." My mom showed me an ivory one shoulder lace dress with a sheer back.

I looked at Anna and Emma for approval before taking the dress and heading to the dressing room.

The dress stopped just above my knee and moved smoothly over the little curves that I had.

I stepped out of the dressing room and showed them.

"Oooh," Emma and Anna both went.

"You look beautiful," said my mom. "We'll take it."

We bought the dress and walked out of the store and into the mall.

We were almost to my car when we spotted two men walking. Slowly they joined hands and kissed.

My mother gasped.

"Mom what's wrong?" I asked.

"They can never have children," she said. "You can never have children. I'll never have grandchildren."

"Maybe I don't want kids," I said.

"And Mia?"

I shrugged.

"I will not allow it. I don't care what you think you are Isla Maria, but you will marry a man and give me grandchildren so help me God—"

"Go to hell!" I exclaimed. I grabbed my sisters' hands and ran.

"Where are we going?" One of the ten year olds whined.

I crouched down to their level. "Don't worry," I said and kissed each of their foreheads. "We'll be fine."
