Jade and Nolan have been best friends since the third grade. Jade always feels the need to protect and defend Nolan since their peers didn't react nicely when he came out as gay in the eighth grade.

The bullying started to calm down once they became seniors until Nolan starts to get anonymous homophobic notes left in his locker.
