Love can conquer all; can it conquer death?---Merit has always known she was born in the wrong time; something has always been missing. After escaping death at the hands of human traffickers, her ex-boyfriend Jonathan, an architect, invites her to accompany him to Prague where a mysterious benefactor has hired him to restore a villa. As Merit recovers from her injuries, they soon learn that their new home is haunted and has been since the end of World War II, at least according to the locals. People go in, and never come out. Everything changes when Merit, who doesn't believe in the supernatural, discovers a journal left by the man who once lived here, a man who disappeared in 1945. Quickly losing herself in the pages of his life, she finds herself inexorably drawn to him, and must come to terms with the fact that she is slowly but steadily falling in love with someone she'll never meet.Strange and frightening things start happening, and then Dietrich appears. Claiming to be the original owner's grandson, he pursues Merit with a single-mindedness that's both intimidating and alluring. Torn between Dietrich and Jonathan, she's forced to ask troubling questions: is Dietrich more than he appears? What's his true interest in her? Could he be...something more than human?…
