Thanksgiving Day

Dylan's POV

I sit down on my sofa trying to catch up on some work from work. I hate Thanksgiving; it's hard to celebrate when you have nothing to be thankful for; it's been a tough year. Maybe I should be thankful for being alive and my health or something. I hope Marie-Anne's okay with her lying, I wonder if they've seen through her lies already. I don't know why she won't just tell the truth. Sure her mom might be disappointed, but I'm sure she'll be cool with it after a while.

I feel so bad; it's my entire fault, if only I had worn a condom that night, we wouldn't be in this situation. I was about to wear one, but I remember her specifically telling me it was okay. I shake my head trying to get these thoughts out of my head. I grab my laptop to do some research for work, so I can think about something else. I am about to type something in my search engine when my doorbell rings; it's probably a wrong address. I suck my teeth not feeling like getting up right now. I just got comfortable in my position.

Knowing that I have no choice, I lazily get up and walk to the door opening it. Marie-Anne stands up the door tapping her foot impatiently. "What are you doing here?" I ask her telling her to come in, "and why the hell are you wearing a big jacket, it's like ninety degrees?" I question her closing the door.

"What are you doing?" She asks me her voice low as usual.

"You can't answer a question with a question," I tell her.

"I told my mom I was going to the store so she can stop asking me questions," she states taking a seat on my sofa.

"Wouldn't have to if you would just tell her the truth and you think you're mom's stupid? I live an hour away," I declare. Driving here and back will take two hours; anyone in their right mind won't believe her when she comes back from her so called store.

"You're right; can you do me a favor?" She asks me.

"Sure, what is it?"

"Come with me," she says.

"Marie-Anne, anything, but that plus I'm busy."

"Doing what?"

"Work," I lie. Truth is I have time to do my work, but I would rather die than go back with her to her place. I feel like her mother hates me and her brother threatened to kill me last time I saw him. I'm sorry, but I am not ready to die yet.

"Please," she says doing a puppy face. She flashes her long lashes multiple times waiting for me to fall for it. I know better than that, I grew up with a little sister. Cute faces don't work on me anymore. "If you come with me, I'll tell her." She adds.

"Marie-Anne I can't I-" I start.

"You said you would be my side when I told her," she utters reminding me. Now she is making me feel guilty, I did tell her I would be by her side when she tells her mom and it is my fault she is pregnant.

"Fine," I say getting from where I am sitting, "let me change," I walk to my room to change into some new clothes.

"Thank you!" I hear her yell from the living room. What did I get myself into again?

"Marie-Anne, this is a bad idea," I tell her as we park in her parking lot. I take her keys out of the ignition and hand them to her. I look at her place; outside it looks so peaceful, but I can already think about what will happen the moment I step foot inside.

"I know," she answers a frown in her face, "maybe I should just forget about telling her."

"No, you should and I did promise you I'd be by your side and that's exactly what I am going to do," I open the car doo getting out of the car. She then follows, we reach her front door. We both stand there looking at the door. "Are you going to open the door?" I ask her.

"Yeah," she says. She puts the key in the keyhole and twists it opening the door.

"Marie, I was about to call you, where did you go?" Esther asks as she enters. I enter after her and Esther's jaw drops, "Dylan," she says acknowledging me after some time.

"Marie, is that you?" I hear a familiar voice asks from the other side of the house.

"Yeah ma," she says back loud enough for her to hear. "Okay, this is a bad idea," she then says in a whisper.

"You think?" Esther asks her sarcastically. "You can't just expect her not to find about you being pregnant when you bring a boy around." She adds.

"Pregnant?" Someone else asks coming behind Esther. "Who's pregnant?" Marven asks. Okay, this is officially a bad idea. He walks coming closer to us, Marie-Anne gulps down out of nervousness, and her eyes looks watery like she is one second away from crying. Marven turns and looks at me, he has gotten a lot taller and he looks more muscular too. He then looks at Marie-Anne rubbing his face. "Marie!" He practically yells at her.

"I'm sorry," Esther says, "I didn't mean to, just go outside," she says pushing all of us outside. She shuts the door when we all reach probably so the others won't hear us.

"That's what you've been lying about," Marven says disappointment written all over his face. She stands there frozen not saying anything, one by one small tears start falling down her cheeks. Now I can see why Marie-Anne's been afraid of them finding out, "Marie, why didn't you tell us?" He asks her using his thumb to wipe out the fallen tears out of her face.

"Marven, I couldn't," she says.

"Marie, we use to tell each other everything," he gives her a hug.

"If I told you, mama would have find out and you know how mama is," she says her cries becoming louder.

"Yes I do. Marie, I know mama has high expectations, but you know she loves you no matter what happens and she will be okay with it," he says rubbing her curls.

"I'm sorry," she says, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she repeats one after the other.

"Don't apologize, okay?" Marven asks her pulling away, "it'll be fine," he adds.

"Why are you crying?" The door opens again revealing Marie-Jane or as I like to call her Marie-Anne's twin. They just look so much alike. The door opens wider showing the person Marie-Anne has been trying to avoid all this time.

"Are those tears of joy?" Her mother asks her, "I hope so," she adds.

"Ma, I have something I want to tell you," she tells her mom.

"What is it?" She asks her. "Are you finally getting married? Is he a good Haitian man?" She asks one after the other.

"No, I'm pregnant," she blurts out quickly. Marie-Jane's face drops, her mom comes closer bringing her ear like she didn't hear her clearly.

"I don't think I heard you clearly," her mom declares. "I think I heard you say you were pregnant."

"I did ma, I am pregnant!"

"Kisa?" Her mom asks. I stand there not understanding what she said, but her face expression gives it all away.
