The ship trembled and the sepia displays blinked out in a rain of sparks. Captain Kirk and Spock staggered through the narrow halls and up onto the deck of the ship just as it began to tilt to the side, falling from the sky and heading straight for one of the large buildings.

Kirk held onto the railing as tightly as he could, closing his eyes when the ship broke through the glass. The metal frame of the building groaned under the weight of the ship, warping and bending beneath its impact. Kirk's grip was torn away from the railing and he went flying in the air and tumbled across the smooth surface of the floor.

He looked up, just as he saw the side of the ship screeching loudly as it tore up the floor, heading straight for him. Moments before the giant metal hull crushed him, the building's frame gave enough resistance that the ship came to a shuddering stop.

Kirk hesitated for a second, waiting for fate to change its mind and have the roof cave in or the ship suddenly explode. But much to his amazement, none of these things occurred. He grinned, letting himself lean back against the ground, staring at the now warped ceiling above him.

Bones did say he was one of the luckiest people he had ever met. Excluding the occasional card game, Captain Kirk was beginning to think he was right. Pure dumb luck, he thought to himself.

With a deep breath, he rolled over and staggered to his feet. His head was pounding, his neck felt stiff and his back ached. He groaned in exhaustion, starting to search the wreckage. He was pretty sure he had broken his arm during the fall. He was no doctor, but he was certain the painful ache and the fact it probably shouldn't bend that way were pretty good indicators of damage.

He found Spock leaning against a wall, surrounded by the wreckage. "Hey," He said, dropping painfully to his knees and shaking the unconscious Vulcan's shoulders. "Spock!" He nearly shouted. "Can you hear me?"

Spock's eyes opened and he looked at the captain. "I assure you, my hearing is not impaired in any way. I can hear your voice clearly."

Kirk smiled in relief, sinking back onto the floor. "Damnit. I thought we lost you."

Spock grimaced as he tried to sit up. "No. Merely resting my eyes."

Kirk nodded. "You look like hell."

Spock raised an eyebrow. "I feel 'like hell,'" he told the captain.

Kirk looked out the shattered window. A light breeze blew and the bleak and pale grey sky had begun to darken with an approaching storm. "I think we did good," He commented.

"We overthrew the planet's ruling government and plunged a city into complete anarchy."

"But all and all, we did pretty good."

"If you insist, Captain."

The battle was over when Captain Kirk and Spock made it outside. A small area with a fountain and benches was near the half destroyed building. Leaning heavily on the captain's shoulders, Spock looked at the bodies of guards now littering the street. People were celebrating. Somewhere a group of civilians were singing. Spock sunk down on one of the benches, sighing in relief as he could rest.

Sulu and part of the landing crew eventually found the two. Uhura instantly ran to Spock, wrapping her arms around him. She pulled away, holding his face in her hands, tears filling her eyes. With a smile, she laid a gentle kiss on his lips before wrapping her arms back around him.

Spock returned the gesture, but the faintest traces of human emotion that were usually present in his dark eyes, were now completely gone.

"Captain!" Sulu said with a smile.

"Boy did you guys pick the perfect time to show up," Kirk told him, returning the smile.

"Sorry we couldn't get to you sooner. We lost communications right after you touched down on the surface," Sulu told him, explaining how the energy barrier damaged the transporter and how they had to modify the shuttle before they could launch a rescue party.

"Good work," Kirk said, nodding.

A crew member entered the street, heading to Sulu. "Ensign Jaylah is safely aboard the shuttle receiving medical treatment," He reported.

"Thank you," Sulu said.

"How is she?" Kirk asked, the concern evident in his voice.

The man turned to Kirk. "She's stable. Doctor McCoy was able to stop the internal bleeding. She will require more treatment, but the doctor says she will make a full recovery."

Kirk breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you."

The man gave a curt nod before returning to his own business. Uhura helped Spock to his feet.

"Captain, I'm taking him to the shuttle for medical treatment," She told him.

"Lieutenant, I assure you that my injuries are not severe. There are many other individuals who had sustained injuries far worse than I and require immediate medical assistance," Spock said.

"Spock, you can barely stand," Captain Kirk said. "Go to the shuttle. That's an order."

Spock looked at the captain for a moment, his dark eyes emotionless. He gave a curt nod, allowing Uhura to assist him.

Sulu watched them leave. He turned to the captain, his eyes questioning, but he said nothing.

Dara entered the small area, followed by a small group of civilians. Kirk smiled at her approach. She stopped in front of him and dropped to a low bow. The captain did the same.

"Thank you for everything you did back there," Kirk said with a smile.

"It w-as all you," She told him.

"We wouldn't have taken the city without your help," A man told him. "We owe you...and them a lot."

"What are you going to do now?" Kirk asked them.

"We will change many things," A woman said. "But we will get by."

"You and your people have saved us. Thank you," The man said.
