Flashback chapter continued.

-------------------------------------------------------

Namjoon has stopped breathing. He folds himself into his seat,

gasping for breath, tearing his eyes away from her,

as the realization hits him.

--------------------------------------------------------

Aura lowers her head to hide a laugh

as Tall Guy slams into the plastic barrier.

The exact same place as earlier.

It unsettled her that she found it cute.

But it unsettled her even more

that a guy with piercing catlike eyes

had turned around to watch them both.

He met her eyes briefly, and his slanted gaze ran over her

as he turned back to his seat without a word.

--------------

Namjoon's head is a buzz of a whirlwind.

He watches as a flight attendant pours Phone Girl a drink.

Phone Girl gives the woman a polite smile,

a brief flash of white teeth between cherry lips

and Namjoon feels dizzy almost.

I'm supposed to be smart.

Why can't I think?

"What are you doing?"

Namjoon's view is blocked by Yoongi leaning against his seat divider.

"Uh just trying to memorize this speech..." Namjoon tosses his head and answers.

"I mean why do you keep shaking your head like that?" Yoongi's dry voice is low and quiet.

Namjoon knows exactly what he means.

He's been squeezing his eyes shut and shaking his head like he was trying to clear his vision.

Because he was.

There were gold sparks dancing across his field of sight, and they wouldn't go away.

Maybe he was too tired.

Maybe.

Maybe...

"If you don't answer me, then you already know," Yoongi shrugs.

Namjoon can feel his own lips part with surprise.

If even Yoongi thinks so...

"I just came to make sure you knew."

Yoongi turns and trudges back to his own seat.

Namjoon does know.

Or rather, he has suspicions.

There would be no way of knowing for sure until he tested it....

But if he did, then there would be no going back.

He lifts his eyes to study the girl diagonally in front of him, across the aisle.

She is sipping on orange juice,

and her headphones are plugged into the entertainment system,

a small smile on her face as she watches her movie screen...

"What's wrong with you?"

Jin leans over the center divider, his long arm dangling over and probing Namjoon's arm.

"What?"

Namjoon blinks.

"You keep staring at that girl."

"I was just... oh you know, she's the one that returned my phone."

"Oh really? What did Yoongi say to you?" Jin asks suspiciously.

"He was saying... that... okay, wait, I'm going to come over there."

Namjoon gives up.

He unclips his seatbelt and walks down the aisle,

rounding the other side to Jin's seat.

He drops down to sit on the arm of the seat.

Jin leans away, surprised.

"What's so serious?"

Namjoon leans in to whisper right against his ear.

"That girl, who returned my phone,

she's been giving me vibes like...

golden sparks...

I think... it might be soulmate... vibes."

Jin freezes.

Then...

"What?" he explodes.

Namjoon rushes to put a hand over his mouth,

shushing him.

"Shh, hyung!"

Jungkook and Yoongi both look over.

Jungkook bats his sleepy eyes at them... and goes back to sleep.

Yoongi sighs and gets up.

Jin shakes his head.

"You've got to be kidding."

"I don't know what to do! It's crazy!

I keep seeing these golden lights around her..."

Namjoon is a little relieved to be confessing.

"She hasn't noticed anything?" Jin furrows his brows.

"I don't think so. She barely even acknowledged me," Namjoon shifts his weight nervously.

Yoongi joins them.

"If you just let her walk off this plane, you may never see her again.

It could be a good thing, if you don't want a soulmate.

Now you know you're safe as long as you avoid her.

It would be easy," Yoongi shrugs.

"Of course he shouldn't just let her go!

What if he changes his mind in the future and wants his soulmate after all?

He has to say something to her," Jin sits up straight,

speaking louder and louder with indignation.

"Please, please, shhh..." Namjoon cringes and peers over the top of the divider.

Caught in her own world, with Alita: Battle Angel playing on her screen,

the cherry lipped girl is watching her movie,

eating grapes with her headphones on.

"She can't hear us," Yoongi says lazily.

"But I can hear Jin hyung," Taehyung's head leans over across the aisle.

He unbuckles his seatbelt and slinks over excitedly, a wide grin on his face.

"A soulmate?? What are you guys talking about?

Who found a soulmate? Sejin hyung?"

"Soulmate?" Jimin swings over the back of his seat divider.

"Jungkook's?"

Namjoon lowers his face into his hands.

Yoongi sighs.

"Yes. We are talking about Jungkook's soulmate, but it's private so go away."

Jimin rubs his nose and sinks back into his seat.

"She's my friend... why would it be private from me?" Taehyung frowns, not budging.

"Because Jungkook doesn't want you to know. Get lost," Yoongi waves his hand dismissively.

Taehyung flattens his mouth and marches away, sulking.

"You need to make up your mind," Yoongi shakes his head.

"It doesn't matter what you choose but you have to be sure."

"What if you ask for a way to keep in touch with her, but you don't tell her why?" Jin asks.

"How can I get her number? I don't think she's interested in me that way.

If I ask... she would say no, I think," Namjoon runs his hand through his hair.

"Because you're not worldwide handsome," Jin tsks.

"Get Taehyung to go. He can switch seats with you.

Everyone likes him. He can casually ask what she does for work.

And then we can have one of the managers get her phone number or business card,"

Yoongi suggests.

"Make it seem like a job thing?" Namjoon can think of a few things that might go wrong.

Like if she didn't want a new job. She would decline immediately.

"Look, it's not the perfect solution, but if you don't want to tell her what you feel

then you have to get her contact information somehow in another way."

Yoongi is starting to sound impatient.

"It would be rude for her to say no to exchanging business cards if hyung-nim pretends to be looking into hiring from her field of work."

"It's true," says a much gentler voice.

Namjoon looks up in surprise.

Standing behind their seats is their publicist.

"Hyung," Namjoon says, his throat dry.

"How much did you hear?"

"Enough," the older guy replies.

Namjoon wants to put his head in his hands again.

"You should tell your manager, Namjoon," the older guys says.

"I'll go get him."

--------

It takes him a few minutes, but he returns with both Hoseok and Namjoon's manager.

"The hyung line should all know about this," he shrugs, before leaving.

By the look on their faces, they were already given the highlight.

Hoseok squats down, his eyes wide and shell-shocked.

"It's only been a few months since Jungkook... "

"I know, I know," Namjoon grabs his hair.

"This is terrible timing."

"It's not your fault, Namjoon-ah, you didn't choose this."

Hoseok pats him on the elbow.

"What do you want to do, Namjoon?" His manager asks.

"I......"

Namjoon glances over at her again.

If he said nothing...

And let her go...

He would be responsible as BTS RM.

But he would be irresponsible to himself, as Kim Namjoon.

And he didn't even know her...

But if she was meant for him...

He couldn't help but want to get to know her.

"I- I don't know," Namjoon answers.

"You're going to go bald," Yoongi rolls his eyes.

Namjoon lets go of his hair,

dropping his hands onto his knees.

"You have to get her contact information. You have to.

Even if you don't want it now, one day you will," Jin says.

He's looking Namjoon straight in the eyes,

his expression so uncharacteristically serious.

"I think so too," Hoseok nods encouragingly.

Namjoon looks to his manager, who nods.

And to Yoongi, who shrugs.

"I don't want a soulmate. But if you do, then you should have one," Yoongi says.

Namjoon sighs.

"I didn't... want to do anything... reckless.

But if we're careful about it... then...

I do want to somehow keep in touch with her,

maybe for the future, I don't know... but..."

"Okay, let's go talk to her," his manager nods.

Namjoon hurriedly pulls out his phone,

using the self camera to check his hair.

It was limp from his hat, but it'll have to do.

He stands and his eyes fall onto Phone Girl- no,

onto... his soulmate.

He clears his throat,

straightens his shirt...

trying to gather his thoughts over the jittery panic he felt.

Golden light flickers all around Namjoon's heart...

as he walks up to his soulmate.
