Dedicated to @JeanetteBrown046 for a fun chat in the comments and for helping me think about some stuff I may want to edit in.

Logan

Jasper thinks what I said over for a minute and then lets his breath out in a whoosh. All the tension leaves his body and he grins. "Thanks, man. I owe you one."

I watch as he runs out of the room, and shake my head. I really hope he knows what he's doing. I wait a few minutes, giving him a head start, and then climb out of bed to follow. Saffron won't stay in Zara's room, not with Jasper in there, so my guess is she'll be taking a shower.

I check my phone. Seven minutes past twelve. I head down to the second floor and quietly head down the hall to the bathroom. I don't see a sliver of light from beneath the door and there is no sound of running water. I take a sniff first, just to be sure, but I don't pick up my mate's scent. She's not here. I open the bathroom door and peek into the darkness, but just like I thought. There's no one here.

Where would Saffron go if she didn't plan to shower? It takes me a few seconds and then it hits me. The kitchen! Saffron, Jess, and Zara all skipped dinner—probably talking it out or crying or whatever it is girls do—so maybe Saffron went down to find a midnight snack. I did tell her she could go to the kitchen at any time.

My stomach growls as I head back down the hall. I was too busy keeping an eye on the door—waiting for Saffron to come down—to eat much of my dinner. I wouldn't say no to some food now, followed by a hot make-out session with my mate on the kitchen barstool. Then I should probably try to teach her to link again, or maybe I should start with linking, since we don't have much time.

The whole linking thing has been driving me nuts since Jess dragged Saffron away this afternoon. Yeah, I was worried about Jess freaking out too, but at least that makes sense. I promised Jess I wouldn't hook up with any girls until I met my mate. I only did it so she'd leave me alone and stop begging me to get back together, but it was still a promise. I wish I could have told her the truth—that Saffron is my mate—to get her to stop freaking out... but until Saffron's ready to be Luna, I can't tell anyone. Which means there really isn't anything I can do about Jess being upset. At least anything more than ask Zara to intervene if Jess freaks out again.

Which brings me to a more important problem. How do I teach my mate pack history and linking, then turn her into a Luna, and all before Father and the rest of the pack catch on?

I don't know the answer. Even my own parents don't know the answer, and they're only worried about the Luna bit. The only person who might know is the Wolfsbane Luna, and I can't even ask her. If I do, she'll tell Father, the current pack Alpha, and I can kiss my future goodbye.

My only choice is to contact the Luna in a way that doesn't get traced back to me. What if I block my number and make an anonymous call? Would she recognize my voice? Probably. Even if she doesn't, I'm sure she'll figure it out somehow. She's the Wolfsbane Luna!

What I need to do is get another wolf to make the call, and I have the perfect person in mind. I scroll through my contacts until I find Ryan. He's the Silvertooth Alpha, and only a few months younger than me. He and his Beta, Jake, spend summers here, and I know I can trust them.

Jasper and I are only a year older than Ryan and Jake, so our parents have had the four of us train and study together for years. Ryan is the one who always convinces us to take a break, usually by doing something we really shouldn't do. When we were little, it was going for runs or playing instead of training, but lately he'd want to drive down to the lake and make out with different girls. Last summer, I was dating Jess, so I'd always bring her, and Jasper would bring Zara, but Ryan never saw the same girl twice. He also seemed to know where all the parties were happening, so he'd sneak out almost every night. I've covered for him more times than I can count, so he definitely owes me one—or one hundred. If there is any wolf who'd call the Luna for me, it's him.

I find Ryan's number and text him: I need a favour.

Several seconds later, the phone rings. I'm just reaching the foyer on my way to the kitchen and I quickly pick up before the ringing wakes someone.

"Log, my man," Ryan slurs. He's clearly wasted, even though it's Monday and a school night. I can hear music in the background, but it's far enough away that I know Ryan stepped out of whatever party he was at.

"Ryan," I greet him as I slip into the dining room. "Think you can a give me a call in the morning?"

"You should come over here, man," Ryan shouts, ignoring my question. "This party's happening."

I roll my eyes. It's a nine hour drive from my pack house to his, which is why we only see each other over the summer.

"Is Jake around?" I ask. I've never seen Ryan's Beta, Jake, drink. Hopefully, he hasn't started now.

"Sure. Jake. Jake!" Ryan shouts. I lower the volume on my phone as I peek into the dark kitchen. Empty. Definitely no signs of Saffron.

"Hello?" Jake says a second later, taking the phone from Ryan.

"Tell Log to get over here," Ryan shouts in the background. The music gets louder, and I figure Ryan has stepped back into the party.

"Sorry about that," Jake tells me, sounding completely sober. "He's been like this since school started."

"Everything okay?" I ask, flipping on the kitchen lights and heading for the fridge. It's Ryan's job to set an example, as Alpha, and getting drunk on a school night definitely isn't it.

"Yah." Jake laughs, but I can tell he sounds uncomfortable. "Ryan's just trying to get all his partying in before he turns seventeen."

"I hear you," I reply, grabbing a container of lasagna and a fork and heading to the bar. My own Beta is sneaking out to see a girl who's not his mate. Ryan is sneaking out to parties. Who am I to judge?

"Everything okay with you?" Jake asks.

"Yeah," I tell him. "I texted Ryan for a favour. Didn't expect to hear back from him until morning."

"What can we do for you?" Jake asks, all business. He sounds a lot more like an Alpha than Ryan does, but as Beta, it's his job to pick up the slack when his Alpha's unavailable—or in this case, drunk. I know Jasper would do the same for me.

"I have a question for the Wolfbane Luna," I tell Jake, "but she can't know I'm asking."

Jake waits, and I choose my words carefully. I can't tell him everything, or even all that much. I know I can trust him, and Ryan too, when he's sober, but this is too important to just blurt out over the phone. My future is on the line, and if that's not enough motivation, so is my mate's. "I need to find out if there's ever been a wolf who couldn't link."

"Seriously?" Jake asks.

"Yeah, just don't mention my name, okay?"

"Sure, man," he agrees. "How old's the wolf?"

"Doesn't matter." If I say it's a kid, Jake might refuse to call the Luna and just tell me to give it time. If I say it's a grown wolf, he might start asking questions.

"Okay, okay," Jake replies. "I'll call the Luna in the morning."

"Thanks, man. I also need you to find out if there's a way to fix it."

"Sure. But the more information I know, the more—"

I pull the phone away from my ear when I hear footsteps in the dining room, and look up in time to see Jasper enter the kitchen. He's changed out of his shorts and t-shirt into a suit and he's holding a large bouquet of flowers.

"I gotta go, man," I tell Jake. I've revealed more than enough information as it is. "Let me know what you find out?"

"Will do."

I hang up and raise an eyebrow at Jasper. "Did you change your mind, or did she kick you out?" I ask. It would be the smart thing for Zara to do when she knows he'll be hooking up with his mate in less than six hours.

"I haven't seen her yet," Jasper says. "I just need to get the strawberries and chocolate."

"That's a terrible idea," I tell him, but he ignores me and stalks through the kitchen, grabs a few plastic bags from the fridge, and stalks back out.

I shake my head as I watch him go. I know Jasper's making a mistake, but I also know it's too late to do anything about it. He'll find his mate tomorrow, and if she's pissed at him for hooking up with Zara, he'll just have to deal with it. Unless his mate is Jess. Then, Jasper is so, so screwed.

Just how screwed is Jasper, do you think?

Final vote. Jess or Zara? True love or drama? The next chapter decides it all!

Oh, and then there's Ryan and Jake. Anyone remember them??? You'd only know who they are if you read my story "Rejected by my Alpha Mate" (which I temporarily unpublished because it's a mess--which I will clean up once we're done STAWP)

If you liked this chapter, vote, vote vote! And comment too.... but Wattpad is being glitchy and the comments keep failing to load, so bear with me as I try to get it to work long enough for me to reply to you guys!
