Saffron

When I come to, I'm lying on my side in what looks like a prison cell. For a second, I think I'm in POW's dungeon and prepare myself for six and a half feet of Pissed Off Wolf. My heart rate instantly doubles, and then triples when I remember the rogues surrounding me and injecting me with whatever was in that syringe.

I quickly scramble up off the dirt floor and stand on all four paws. My cell is lit up by a lone bulb hanging from the ceiling and brick walls surround me on three sides. The musty smell of dirt permeates every corner and there are no windows to allow fresh air in. Without being able to look outside, I also can't tell the time of day, or have any way of knowing where I am.

I pad quietly up to the metal bars keeping me trapped inside the prison cell. There is a small, dimly lit hallway beyond them, and a brick wall on the other side. I stick my nose between the bars so I can see out, but I can't make out the adjacent cells—all I see is an empty hallway stretching out in both direction.

With no one around, I quickly shift into my human form. My Saffron dress is still tied around my waist, and I grab for it when it starts to slide down my hips. As a wolf, I'm used to being naked in the middle of the forest, but in a prison cell I feel completely exposed. I untie the dress with shaking fingers and slip it on as quickly as I can. Then, I push and pull on the cell door, putting all my strength behind it. The rattling echoes throughout my cell, but the door doesn't budge.

"Hello?" A familiar voice calls out from the other side of the brick wall to my left. "Is someone there?"

"Jess?" I gasp.

"Saffron?" Jess rattles her cell door too. "Is that you?"

"Yeah, it's me." I pull at the door, though it makes no difference. "Are you okay?"

There is a long pause, and then Jess snaps, "If you're really Saffron, then tell me what we were planning to do the night before Jasper's birthday."

"You mean run away?" I ask.

"Okay, well, Zara could have told someone that before..." Jess's voice breaks. "What shoes did I give you?"

"What?" I frown, trying to follow her train of thought. "Why are you asking me that, Jess?"

"Because you're not Saffron," she snaps. "I saw Saffron die. I don't know how you managed to sound like her, but I'm not falling for it."

"What do you mean you saw me die? How do I even know you're Jess? Maybe you're someone else."

"Well, I'm not," Jess snaps. "I saw you making out with Logan and you couldn't link. But you can link now, so you're not Saffron."

"Yes, I am. Okay, let me think. Shoes," I picture my closet floor and start listing them. "Sneakers, booties, flip flops—pink ones!—and cowboy boots too. Oh, and flats."

"What size?" Jess presses, and I don't miss the flicker of hope in her voice.

"Nine."

"It's really you?" Jess cries, and her cell door rattles again. "Oh, Saffron, I thought you died in the rogue attack like... like..." she lets out a loud sob and rattles the cell door again. "They killed her, Saf. She was there for me, through everything, and she was supposed to have it all, even though I never will. She was my best friend..."

"Jess!" I snap as I finally realize she's talking about Zara. "She's not dead."

"What?" Jess whimpers.

"Zara, she's not dead."

"But I saw her. He killed her. I s-saw you both—"

"She's in a coma. Doctor Dev thinks she'll wake up any day now. Maybe she already has."

"Really?" Jess whispers. "You swear?"

"I swear."

"And the kids?"

"They're fine. I haven't seen them, but Luna said they were fine."

"Oh, Saffron." Jess starts to cry, her sobs echo loudly down the hall and through the cell wall. "I thought she was dead. For days I thought she was dead and they... they said Logan and the others were next and—"

"What?" I cry, pulling on the cell door, hard. Once again, it doesn't budge.

"They're going after the pack. Alpha and Luna and Logan... Jasper and Beta too."

"When? What did they say?"

"I don't know. He just said he'll destroy them." Jess whimpers. "All of them."

"Who's he?" I demand. "And why did he take me?"

"I don't know," Jess cries. "All I know is they call him Alpha Daniel and he hates us all so much. I just don't know why."

"Tell me everything you know," I demand as panic runs through my veins.

"I only saw him once. H-he came down to see me and..." Jess trails off, "there's something you need to know and it's... it's awful, Saf."

"What is it? What did he do to you, Jess?" I picture all sorts of horrible scenes, from torture to rape, and hold my breath.

"He's... he's my mate."

"What?"

"My mate," Jess wails. "Alpha Daniel is my mate and he's absolutely horrible. He didn't care about what they did to Zara. I was crying and he was my mate and he didn't care. He spit on me and he rejected me and then he swore he'll destroy them. All of them."

"Well, we can't let that happen." I yank at the door. "We have to do something."

"What?" Jess snaps. "There's no way out."

"There has to be." I back up and take a running start before slamming my shoulder into the door.

"Don't you think I tried that?" Jess demands.

"Well, then try again." I shout. I no longer care that POW betrayed me and that I was the one who ran away. I know, beyond a doubt, that I will do everything within my power to save them. "We have to do something, Jess. We can't just sit here while they hurt our pack."
