Jamie's POV

"Ugh!" A guy groans in my ear. "Damn it!" I gasp awake at the mysterious guy's growl. A ringing phone buzzes in my ear like an annoying bee, and a burst of light stings my green eyes.

"Ugh." I whimper, trying to roll away from the light, but an arm tightly wounded on my hip keeps me in place. "No, thank you." I incoherently mutter, burying my face into my pillow.

It's the middle of the night. No one is calling me, I don't have a phone. Whatever telemarketer or drunk friend is calling, they're calling the stranger lying next to me.

"Shut up!" The guy barks into his cracked phone. Not falling back asleep anytime soon I peek up from my pillow to find the guy sitting up, his dark hair a tousled mess, his legs tangled with mine, and his free arm tucked around my waist. I would push him off, but it's 3am, I'm to tired, and it feels good to have him cuddling with me. I'll never admit that out loud.

"Geez, Nate." The guy sighs. "Yeah, sorry. It's a little fucking late." Nate? Who's Nate? A brother? A roommate? A friend?

"Yeah, Nate." The guy sighs, shrugging on his shirt messily with the phone pinched between his shoulder and ear. "I'm on my way now." His dark eyes finding my eyes in the dark. His handsome face suddenly hardens in the dark.

"...tell her I say hi too." He says lowly like someone just punched him in his stomach. Hurriedly hanging up he tosses his phone somewhere in the dark, angrily glaring in the direction he threw it.

"Where are you going?" I pipe up, my voice low and airy.

"Don't worry about it." He grumbles defensively. "Go back to sleep." He mumbles hollowly, hearing how tired he really is. His knuckles graze my skin as he pulls the covers up to my chin. I don't pretend to go back to sleep, instead I watch him pull on his shoes and black hoodie reluctantly.

"Do you have to?" I ask quietly, gaining his attention. "It's really late." I murmur.

"I have stuff to do." He states, angrily pulling on his laces like they're reigns of a runaway horse. All I want to do is ask what this suppose stuff is that he has to do at three in the morning, but I keep my questions choke down. He catches the curious look on my sleepy face, then runs his hands through his dark hair.

"You don't want to know." He says. "Later Jamie." He says, walking out. I try to fall back asleep, but it's nowhere as peaceful as the one I waken from.

------

At dawn I like to think I have my life together. Apron knotted at my waist, red hair braided, keys and bus pass in hand. Another early shift at the bakery to serve bad coffee and stale donuts to locals in suits, rushing off to adult and whatnot.

Time to go frost cupcakes.

Opening my door I stop in my tracks before I bump into the mysterious mugger. He's stuffing a donut in his mouth, and his hand clutches silver lock picking equipment.

He's back? And he was going to break in? Again?

"You're still here." He covers his mouth as he talks with a mouthful of Krispy Kreme. "You're up early, Jamie." He jams his tools into his pockets and swallows.

"You're back?" I raise a red brow. "And picking my locks? Really?" I question.

"Well, good morning to you too." He rolls his dark eyes, walking past me into my apartment.

"I brought you a donut." He hands me a white doggie bag.

"Um, thanks." I say slowly, watching him make himself at home on my couch. He's acting like he didn't disappear at three in the morning, staying out doing god knows what. Now he's setting his feet up high on my coffee table at dawn, acting like we've known each other our entire lives.

"Um, I gotta go to work." I shuffle on my feet impatiently.

"So?" He asks, licking frosting off his thumb. I have to admit, the sight makes my stomach flutter just the slightest bit.

"So, you'll be alone in my apartment for hours." I state. "And I still don't know your name."

"You left me here alone before." He shrugs. Well, that shut me up. It definitely weakened my argument.

"I'm just going to shower, sleep, eat," he starts "take up space and contemplate life's mysteries." He adds.

"So, you're going to live here." I translate. "I thought this was just for one more night." I state.

"Well, now it's morning. Not night." He cheekily points out his clever loophole. My mouth opens up to protest, but it shuts when I don't have a solid rebuttal.

"Jamie, I won't steal anything." He stares me down, making me feel small in his gaze. "At worst I'll empty out your fridge. I promise." He adds.

"I don't doubt you eating all my food, but can I take your word? You did try to rob my bakery." I say. I want to believe him, I really do.

Especially since my bus will be rolling by any minute now. He stares me down, dozens of unspoken words hanging between us.

"I promise." He says firmly, his dark eyes burning bright. Nodding I walk out of the small apartment, knowing deep down under all my common sense he'll keep his promise.
