Halloween

I sigh and sit down on my bed while my friends are getting ready.

Tina and Lilly have been my friends since middle school.

Tina is blonde and tall and pretty. She has brown eyes and always wears red lipstick. Lilly has curly brown hair and green eyes. She's nice and has boys wrapped around her fingers.

"Come on, Haven. Get excited- it's Halloween!"

I shrug. "I know. I am excited."

They both look at me, then roll their eyes and go back to their makeup.

We all opted for sluttier costumes than we would normally go for. Partly because Tina wants to get laid tonight, and partly because we just want to fit in? I don't know.

I walk over to the mirror and look at myself while they blather on about how hot Johnny is going to look tonight and how they hope Rachel dumps Christopher.

I sigh.

I have on tiny, black, leather shorts that are so short, you could probably call them panties and I have on a black corset that laces up in the front and pushes my boobs up.

I have on platform boots that come up to just below my knee and add a couple more inches to my height.

I put on some cat ears to make the outfit look like a costume and not just lingerie. My green eyes are outlined in harsh black makeup. My skin is already pale and flawless, so I don't have any other makeup on other than Carmex on my full lips.

I tuck my hair behind my ear, then sit back down on my bed, falling onto my back and looking up at the ceiling.

Tina is going as a playboy bunny. Lilly is a sexy pirate.

When they're finally ready, we leave my room and go downstairs to find my parents making out on the couch.

I gag and we rush through the room quietly without them noticing us and our slutty outfits.

"By guys!" I call when we're at the door, out of sight.

"Oh, By honey! Be careful! Have a designated driver!" Mom calls.

I sigh and close the door behind us.

We all get into Lilly's car and drive to Johnny's house.

Johnny is the most popular kid in our school. He's blond and he's a football player with shiny blue eyes. He's not my type, but everyone else is in love with him.

When we get to his house, we park next to the sidewalk. There are already a million cars here.

He has a huge house and throws parties constantly. One good thing about him, is that he invites everyone. Anyone can go. Unlike some people who only invite cheerleaders.

Inside, the house is dark, except for some strobe lights and black lights. Music is blaring and there are fake cobwebs and skulls everywhere. People are making out next to the wall. There's a dance floor that is almost not big enough for all the people, but they seem to manage, pressing themselves against each other shamelessly.

In the center of the huge living room, under the chandelier, there's a snack table and red 'blood' punch and candy eyeballs and stuff like that.

Tina waves at us and runs off to find a guy for the night.

Lilly takes my hand. "Let's go over to the bar!" She says over the music, dragging me across the room. As we walk, we pass a few girls from our school and they look us up and down. I smirk and wave sarcastically, then Lilly drags me up to the bar and orders both of us a drink.

A lot of people here are probably underage, but the bartender is probably well-paid to keep his mouth shut about this.

Most of us are 18.

I wait for Lilly while she drinks, but I don't drink. After a while, she runs off with some guy from our school that I thought had a girlfriend.

I sigh and walk over to a wall, leaning against it.

A group of guys suddenly surround me and I narrow my eyes at my brothers.

"Hey, sis!" Danny grins.

I have four brothers. Timmy, Greg, Anthony and Danny. Why did my parents had five children? Because they're sluts.

Timmy and Danny are twins and they're both seventeen- a year younger than me. Anthony is 20 and Greg is 21. They're all dressed as vampires.

"What the hell are you wearing?" Greg asks.

I narrow my eyes. "A costume."

"That's not a costume, sis- it's a lingerie." Timmy says.

I sigh. "Did mom and dad send you guys to spy on me, again?"

They all nod.

I cross my arms over my chest. "Well, don't worry about it. I'm fine."

Anthony narrows his eyes too, then nods with a smile. "Yup! She's fine- i'm gonna go find Lisa-"

Greg grabs him by his ear. "She's your responsibility tonight. I'm leaving this hell hole."

"What?! No!" Anthony protests, but Greg leaves, followed by Danny and Timmy.

Anthony calls after them, then turns around, glaring at me.

I smile. "You can go. I'm really fine. I'll be home in the morning. Go find Lisa." I add.

He sighs, then pats my head. "You're a good sister." He says, then he leaves in the opposite direction the other went.

The music is too loud after a while. The lights too flashy. People are too close to me. I see Lilly making out with some guy and Tina is straddling some dude in a chair.

I roll my eyes and walk toward the back of the house, trying to find an exit. I open the first door I see and it's a bedroom. I walk in and then through it where there's a terrace. I go out onto it and lean against the railing, looking out at the dark night. Kids in costumes are walking down the streets with their candy bags and their parents follow behind them at a distance.

I sort of wish I was still a kid. I wish I still had fun like that and didn't have to worry about anything but what time SpongeBob was going to come on.

"Not having a good time in there?"

I turn and smile at one of my good friends, Lincoln.

He walks up and leans on the railing next to me. "This party blows." He glances at me with a smile.

I shrug. "Yeah. I haven't even seen the host."

"That's because he's upstairs with two Brides of Frankenstein."

I laugh and bump his shoulder with mine.

He grins down at me. "It's true!" He defends, wrapping his arm around my shoulders.

I lean against him and feel him rest his chin on the top of my head.

"I like your costume." He mumbles. "It's very conservative." He teases.

I smile. "Well, damn. I was going for slutty, not conservative." I tease and glance at him. He has on regular clothes, except for a black top hat. "What are you dressed up as?"

"Why does everyone keep asking me that?" He sighs dramatically. "I'm Lincoln."

"Oh. I get it- because you're scary all the time." I tease, causing him to chuckle.

"Abraham Lincoln. Not just me Lincoln." He explains. "It's ironic."

I smile. "You could've worn a suit or something."

He shrugs. "I figured my name made up for the lack of a costume. I forgot that I'm invisible and no one knows my name, though..." He shrugs. "You think I could pass for Lincoln?"

"You aren't invisible, Linc. Every girl here knows your name." I tell him. "And I think you're a very sexy Abraham Lincoln.

He smirks. He's gorgeous and He's the bad boy of the school, though he's not all that bad anymore. He used to drink a lot and smoke and party constantly, but he just sort of stopped doing that when he started hanging out with me more. Probably because i'm not into that stuff- i'm boring.

He rubs his hand up and down my arm. "Are you cold?"

I shrug and then he takes his jacket off and puts it on me. It's too big and the sleeves are too long, but it's warm and it smells good and familiar, like him. I thank him and put my arms through and push the sleeves back so I can see my hands.

We walk over to the small bench and we sit down on it next to eachother.

"So where'd your friends run off to?" He asks.

"I don't know. Probably with some random dudes that have herpes. Where are yours?"

He shrugs. "Most likely passed out drunk, by now."

"Well, I guess we're stuck with eachother, then."

He smiles a little bit. "Like old times... How are your parents?"

"They're as horny as ever."

He laughs. "I guess that's better than them not touching at all."

"Maybe. I just wish they would refrain from doing it in the living room. Or anywhere in public, really. Last month, I had to go and bail them out of jail because they were getting it on in the park."

He tries to hold in a laugh, only half succeeding. "Interesting."

"Embarrassing, is a better word."

"Well, at least they're happy."

I smile at the thought of them. They are insane, but he's right. They're happy and that's all that matters.

"How are your parents?" I ask.

He sighs. "Well, my mom is still cheating on my dad and now my dad has a girlfriend who is three years older than me."

I raise my eyebrows.

"Seriously, I don't even know how he got the chick. What does she see in him? Do you think my dad is sexy?"

I laugh. "Well... If he's anything like you, then she's got a keeper."

He looks at me, surprised, then he looks back out into the night. "Thanks." He mutters.

We sit together in silence, then I lean my head on his shoulder.

"How long has it been since we stayed the night At each other's house?"

He takes a deep breath. "A very long time."

I look over at him and then our eyes lock together and I miss him. We used to hang out all the time...

Lincoln is gorgeous- every girl at school wants him, but he doesn't seem to care.

He has messy, thick brown hair that falls across his dark grey eyes. It's slightly curly. Stubble covers his cheeks and chin. He has a defined jawline. He has on dark jeans and big combat boots and a black, V-neck t shirt. He's tall and strong. Not too muscular, but well defined. He had on a leather jacket, but i'm wearing it now.

When he catches me staring at him, my eyes drift down to his full lips and then he swallows and I move a little bit closer to him, adjusting myself so i'm facing him. He turns too and runs his hand up my thigh...

The patio door bursts opens and we both automatically move away from each other, standing.

"What the hell?" An angry Melody demands.

I glance back at her, pulling Linc's jacket more tightly around myself.

Melody is Lincoln's girlfriend. She's dressed in a lavish, 1800's styled dress with a wig and everything... completely opposite from Linc's toned down costume... if you can even call his a costume...

She narrows her eyes at me, looking me up and down. "Seriously, Haven?!" She yells at me.

I look down and shake my head. "It was nothing-"

"Nothing?" She asks, looking hurt. "Don't tell me that was nothing- Lincoln, I see the way you look at her." She adds, accusingly glaring at him.

He looks away from her. "I don't know what you're talking about."

I clutch my arm anxiously, wanting out of this situation. I look at Lincoln and when his eyes meet mine, they soften and he sighs.

"I'm gonna go." I mumble. "I'm so sorry." I tell him, unable to look at him anymore.

He catches my hand in his and a huge wave of guilt comes crashing down over me. I just stand there in front of him, my hand in his, while Melody watches.

"Melody, I... It was always her." He says.

My lips part in shock and sorrow for Melody. I pull my hand out of his.

She's crying. "What the hell do you mean it was always her?" She asks, tears streaming down her face.

He touches her shoulder. "I'm sorry." He says, honestly. "You're a great girl. And anyone would be damn lucky to have you... But you can't tell me that this is a surprise." He gestures to me.

I look down when she glares at me.

"You can't tell me that you never loved me." She cries, desperately. "You never loved me?"

He shrugs. "Honestly, I don't think I even know what love is. We are just teenagers, you know-"

She scoffs and hits his head. "You're an asshole!" She sobs.

He rolls his eyes with a frustrated sigh. "You're drunk. This didn't have to be so dramatic, but you just had to-"

"Oh, so it's MY fault that you were kissing another girl?! I'm your girlfriend, Lincoln! Not her!" She screams.

She starts swaying on her feet and I gasp and Lincoln catches her right before she falls.

"Shit." He mutters.

I don't know what to do, so I opt for nothing.

He lays her down on the bench, then puts his hands on his hips, looking down at her.

Then he looks at me. "I'm sorry." He says. "Shitty timing... I've never had a good sense of timing. Maybe it's because of my obsession with time when I was a kid...Remember that time traveling machine I used to have?" He smirks. "And how I changed every clock in the entire house so that I would have an extra hour of sleep? That didn't end well for me... Had to sit on a pillow for a month."

"Was the hour of sleep worth it?"

He grins. "Yes."

I can't help but to smile at him.

He sighs, looking back down at Melody. "I think I should probably drop her off at her place." He says and he tosses me his keys, making it clear that he wants me to go with him.

I don't question it and he picks her up and we walk back inside. He carries her down the stairs like she weighs nothing, which surprises me a little bit.

"My car is by the tree outside." He tells me.

I nod and walk ahead of him, quickly.

I get into the driver's seat of his army green jeep.

He puts Melody in the back and sits beside her.

I start driving, and turn on the radio softly. "Does she still live by the school?" I ask.

He nods.

After a while of driving, I glance in the rear view mirror, finding him looking down at her lovingly.

He glances up and his eyes meet mine. I look away, clearing my throat awkwardly.

He smiles. "What?"

I shake my head and force a smile. "Nothing... You guys just look... good, together."

He narrows his eyes. "What do you mean?"

"I just mean... I mean you should take some time and think about this." I shrug, tapping my fingers on the steering wheel. "Maybe you're a little bit drunk right now... I don't think you're going to want me in the morning when you're sober and she's gone." I gesture to Melody, keeping my eyes on the road because i'm afraid to see his expression.

"I'm not drunk, Haven."

I give him a sad smile.

When we get to her house, we manage to get her to wake up enough to stumble drunkenly to the door.

I take her, because Lincoln is afraid of her dad.

When she gets out, she looks at me, her makeup smeared all over her pretty face.

"... I knew it." She slurs.

"You knew what?" I ask, wrapping her arm around my shoulder and dragging her toward the door.

"That he loved you. Everyone knew."

Melody's father opens the door, looking livid.

I force a smile. "Hey, Mr. Smith." I say as Melody leans most of her weight on me.

He takes her with a sigh. "What the hell?"

I shrug. "It must've been the blood punch-"

He drags Melody inside, then slams the door in my face.

I smile and walk back to the car to find Lincoln in the passenger's seat.

I smile and get in and start driving. "Where to?" I ask.

"Are your parents home?"

I shrug. "Possibly. Either there or at a strip club." I say, truthfully.

"Let's go to your place. If they're home, we could go to mine."

I nod and go in that direction.

When we get to my place, my parents' car is gone. I park by the curb and then we both sit in an awkward silence...

"Look, Lincoln, I didn't mean-"

Then he wraps his fingers in my hair and drags me closer and his mouth covers mine.

I'm so shocked, my lips part and then his tongue brushes against mine and it makes me dizzy with lust... Then I pull back, looking at him with a frown.

He's close and he tucks my hair behind my ear.

My heart is racing and he rests his forehead against mine, his eyes closed, breathing deeply.

I pull back and shake my head. "I can't." I say. "I can't- we... we're friends, Linc. I don't want to ruin this," I look at my shoes.

He takes my hand in his, but nods. "...It's your call."

I raise his hand and press my lips against it, gently. "I'm sorry." I mumble. "You can still come inside. We could watch some scary movies, or..." I shrug.

He looks away. "I think I'd rather go home."

My stomach flips and my heart drops. I nod. I ruined it. He's the nicest guy I've ever met and I ruined it.

"Okay." I manage, almost too quietly to hear.

He gets out of the car and I do too. We walk around the front of the car and our shoulders brush against eachother's as we walk by. I feel tears fill my eyes as I drop his keys in his hands. I keep walking until I'm at my door and then he gets into the driver's seat and starts the car and screeches off. I turn and watch his car disappear down the street.

I unlock the door and walk inside, finding a bowl of candy with a note that says 'Pass it out or eat it. We'll be home in the morning. Love you. Mom.'

Tears suddenly fill my eyes and I run upstairs and walk into my room, leaning back against the door to close it. I stand there for a minute while tears fall down my cheeks, then I walk over to my closet and take my boots off, tossing them in the back of the closet. I take off all of my clothes except for my bra and panties. I walk into the bathroom and take off all of the stupid makeup, trying to pull myself together.

I walk back to my closet when i'm done. I pull on some skinny jeans and some sneakers. I put on a black, longsleeved shirt and then I walk back downstairs.

I grab the bowl and take it into the living room, plopping down on the couch. My brothers aren't home yet, so I'm by myself. I turn on the tv and flip it on a scary movie marathon.

The movies are all like a hundred years old and the special effects suck. Linc and I would have laughed at that, but he's not here.

I open a package of candy corn and eat a few of them, trying to concentrate on the bad movie but I Can't and I'm just staring at the phone because he still hasn't called and I want him to.

I stand up and grab a bag, dumping the candy in it and leaving the house. I walk fast down the street. I walk for about five minutes and then I'm on Lincoln's street. I walk up to his house and ring the doorbell, repeatedly until the door opens and his little sister Rose opens the door with a smile on her pretty face. She's only four. She's dressed as a fairy, holding a bowl of candy for trick-or-treaters. It only has one piece of candy left in it.

I smile. "Hey, Rose."

"Haven!" She squeals, opening the door and jumping at me. I pick her up and she hugs me.

"What are you doing up? It's way past your bedtime." I tease.

She grins. "I had to hand out the candy!"

I look up and see Lincoln walk onto the porch, standing in front of us.

I put Rose down and smile a little bit at him. "Trick or treat." I say, holding out my bag for him to drop candy in.

As soon as I say it, Rose stuffs the last piece of candy in her mouth.

Lincoln looks at me warily.

"Well... Since there's no more candy, you're just going to have to give me something else instead." I tell him, with a shrug.

A small smile tugs at the corner of his mouth. "What did you have in mind?"

I stand on my tip toes and wrap my arms around his neck, tightly and our lips crash together.

It takes him a second, but then he's kissing me back roughly, immediately taking control of the kiss. His hands run up my sides so my shirt moves up and his hands can feel my skin. I shiver and then I moan and he pulls back, kissing my forehead.

"Ew!" Rose pretends to gag.

Lincoln smiles and then he lets me go to pick her up.
