I'm staring in the mirror at my red and puffy eyes when a knock sounds at my door.

"Mia? Open up." It's Mom.

I sigh and brush my hair out of my face. I walk over to my door and open it.

"You're suspensions over tod-"

"I know."

"Well, are you ready?"

I nod.

She purses her lips. "Mia-"

"I don't want to hear it. Just let me get my bag." With that, I turn, grab my backpack, and push past her. I head down the stairs, praying I don't see my father.

"Mia, dear, would you like some breakfast?"

I flinch. Of course I would have to see him. He walks out of the kitchen and into the mudroom. He smiles a false smile. I shake my head.

"You sure? You need some nutrition."

"I'm not hungry," I say, my voice breaking. I haven't used it almost the whole weekend.

"Well, alright darling." He steps closer, as if he's going to give me a hug. Instead, he grabs a fistful of my hair and squeezes my shoulder with the other hand and leans close to whisper in my ear. "Stop being a little bitch and behave. I don't need you messing shit up with your mother and I."

I bite my lower lip. I'm so sick of crying. I nod.

"Good girl." He backs up. "Now, best get off to school, honey. Don't want you to be late."

I nod, feeling numb except for a pounding in my shoulder. I run out the door.
