Chapter 8 – Wrong Move

** COURTNEY’s POV **

The deal has been set and agreed. But, unluckily, I forgot the most vital part of that agreement… I have a boyfriend!

How am I supposed to flirt with a geek when Troy was around? Not to mention, we’re attending the same school! This is going to be harder than I thought. I can’t tell him this thing; for sure he’ll just beat the hell out of Chad.

Not that I’m concerned with that geek, it’s just that I want to settle this issue with a less violent solution. And Troy beating Chad will just lessen my chance of getting that exam papers.

This is different from the previous errand boy, the moment he gave me the exam papers the deal was automatically off. But this one, it’s the real deal. I have to make Chad fall in love with me. Not only that, he have to say those three words in order to win!

How pathetic!

I’m not the flirt type. Guys fall for me in an instant. The moment they saw me, they just fall in love so easily. That’s what happened with Troy. He claimed that he had this love at first sight thingy towards me. Now I don’t get that geek. He’s so not good looking to be the choosy type. He should be honored that Courtney Collins is even talking to him.

The nerve of that geek!

“Hey Court. You’re spacing out again.” Fiona elbowed me. That made me out of my reverie. We’re at Beverly Center having our Saturday hangout.

“Yeah. Any problem with Troy?” Lucy asked worriedly.

Troy no, Chad yes!

Well, I can’t tell them that I’m having a geek problem. They don’t even know that I have this deal going on. I don’t want a lot of people involve in this issue even if they’re my friends.

“Nothing. Don’t mind me. So, what’s the latest scoop?” I tried to change the subject. And Terry, being the nosy one, started to fill us up with the latest gossip while strolling at the mall.

I barely listened to the things she was saying. But one thing strikes me; they were talking about the geek at the hall yesterday. Chad.

“Repeat that part.” I interrupted.

“Which one?” She asked.

“The geek part.”

“Oh, that. You know, the geek is happened to be Chad Treyson. The president of the drama club, the one that Terry humiliated at the assembly.” And they all started to laugh. I just rolled my eyes at this.

“Go on.” I commanded.

“Oh and he was a transferee back in tenth grade. He was from Ohio. People said that he was an anti social. He doesn’t have any friends. He’s so scary, he doesn’t even know how to smile or laugh. He…”

Yeah, true that. He’s the snob type and so hard to please. How can Terry know this much? Well, maybe I can use her to get the information I need about Chad Treyson. His likes, hobby and stuff. I can start from there.

As I was busy formulating plans in my head, I glanced at the familiar figure at the other side of the mall. There I saw Chad with a little girl?

Now, what was he doing here?

I’m so curious that I wanted to come by and ask him. But how am I going to? I’m with the girls. Well I have to get rid of them first.

“Hey. How about I’ll just meet you at the French Bistro?”

“Aren’t you coming with us?” Terry asked.

“No. There’s this thing I have to buy at… Tiffany’s.” I lied.

“Oh. I’ll come with you. There’s this necklace that I wanted for my birthday and my…”

“Jenny. Not now. I want to concentrate on picking up… something for a friend of mine who’s having her birthday. Opps.” I pretended that I let that one slipped out. I saw Jenny grinned from ear-to-ear.

“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.” She said with enthusiasm.

All of them giggled and they started to walk away.

I have to remind myself that I have a Tiffany necklace to buy for Jenny’s birthday. For sure she’ll be expecting it.

I waited a few more seconds and then I turned around. I started walking towards his direction.

I pretended to look at my phone and accidentally bumped into him.

“Oh, I’m sorry.” I apologized before looking at his direction.

“Collins?” He asked with suspicion.

“Oh, Treyson.” I smiled. I looked at the little girl and smiled as well. “So, the reason why you don’t like me is because you already have a child.” I teased.

He then snorted. “Do I look that old? This is my sister, Cindy."

“Who’s the pretty girl, Chaddy?” The little girl asked. That made my smile even wider.

“Oh. Little girls don’t know how to lie. She even knows what real beauty is. Unlike his brother with no taste.” I grinned. I then looked at the girl and introduced myself. “I’m Courtney Collins.”

“Courtney Collins? That’s odd. Your name is the same with Chaddy’s bedtime stories.”

I can’t help but feel proud about this. So I’m included in Chaddy’s bedtime stories, huh? I was so right that he likes me. I bet I’m one of those princesses in his silly fairytales and he’s the prince. What kind of fantasies does this boy had.

“What character I am at his bedtime stories?” I eagerly asked.

“The witch.” The girl answered and that made me glared at Chad’s direction. The glee I had suddenly turned into frustration.

“Witch. Really? So original.” I scowled at him and he just replied me with a laugh.

“I bet you’re thinking that you’re one of the Princesses in my puerile bedtime stories.” He said in between laughs.

No Terry, you’re wrong. Chad Treyson knows how to laugh, especially if it involves me being humiliated!

I crossed my arms and raised my brows in dismay. “Are you done?”

“Classic. Courtney. You’ll never change.”

“Whatever, Chad. I’m out.” I started to walk away but then I was surprised that he stopped me.

“Wait.” I turned around and waited for him to say something. “Hey, we’re on our way to Quiznos. Wanna join us?” That was… shocking. Is he asking me on a date? “This isn’t a date, okay?” He clarified.

Now how in the hell does he know what I was thinking? Am I that too transparent!

“No thank you. My friends were waiting for me.” I said, playing hard to get.

“Suit yourself.” He then grabbed his sister’s hand and started to walk away.

“That’s it? You’re not even going to insist?” This guy is totally infuriating.

“Hey. You told me you don’t want to, right? Why am I going to insist?” I asked innocently.

“You really don’t understand the language of women. How are you going to make me fall in love with you?” There’s something that I said that made me want to kick myself for being so reckless.

Why Courtney, why!

Chad smirked. With that, I somewhat knew what he was thinking. “Don’t worry Collins, I’m not forgetting that little deal we made yesterday. You will, soon.” He then started to pass towards my direction and walked away.

I heard his little sister asked, “Does she likes you?”

“She will.” I heard him answered with full of confidence.

I wanted to scream in frustration.

He’s so overconfident!

I will not lose this deal Treyson. I have a boyfriend and he’s way hotter and cooler than you!

The trip to the mall ruined my mood. After we ate at the French Bistro, I immediately made an excuse and went straight home.

I tried to formulate a plan on how will I make Chad fall for me. The sooner the better. I don’t want to keep up with this act. He kept on making me feel inferior to him. He’s so full of himself. I hate him! He’s not even likeable. I mean, the way he looks, it below average.

Big goofy glasses, lousy shirt, messy hair, come on! Fix yourself first before claiming that you’ll make me fall for you!

As for me, I don’t get him. Being pretty is not his thing. So what? I have to be the female version of him for him to like me?

I stood up and walked towards my vanity mirror. I examined myself. I can’t be like him, being geek is not my thing. And I will not stoop so low just to win this. I have to think of some other plan, changing my appearance is definitely out of the picture.

I have to learn his secret. The type of girl he likes. Or what does his ex girlfriend looks like, if he even has an ex-girlfriend.

My thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on the door.

“Ms. Courtney, sir Troy is here.”

“Okay. Tell him I’ll be out in a minute.”

I have to set aside those plans first. Today, I have a good-looking and hot boyfriend to attend to.

It’s Monday and as usual, me and my friends were hanging out at the hall, chatting. It’s been our tradition to stay here while waiting for the bell to ring. Busy listening to Terry about the latest gossip of this school.

But there was a brief silence as Chad walked in. The girls followed his every move. He stopped at his locker, which resides in front of us. Then the chatting continues, but this time, it’s about him.

“That’s Chad Treyson, right?” Jenny started. It was loud enough for Chad to hear it.

“Yeah, you saved him from the bullying right Court?” Terry but-in. Oh no, I know where this conversation is going.

“He should be thankful that you did that for him. Did he expressed his gratitude already?” Fiona asked.

“He better be. Because of you, he’s not being bullied anymore.” Lucy spitted out.

I don’t want to bring that topic once again. Because I can’t take the fact that I’m the reason for that incident.

“Let’s not talk about it anymore. It’s just a waste of time, besides he’s not worth it.” Something what I said made me regret it the moment it came out of my mouth. It let out more of an insult than a diversion.

The girls started to laugh hard. I was looking at Chad the whole time, I saw him shook his head and walked away.

What the hell. What’s with me and this stupid mouth!

I waited for the class to end to find Chad right away.

Why do I have the feeling that I kept on apologizing to him? Why does it even bother me? It made me feel uneasy and horrible every time I think that I hurt Chad in any possible way. Maybe the reason why I’m like this was because I know that he’s now holding my future at the palm of his hands.

I immediately went to that secret place of his to find him, but much to my disappointment, he wasn’t there. Maybe he’s doing that SA thing.

I was about to leave but then I saw Chad coming. I hide at the big tree fearing that if he saw me, he’ll just walk out on me.

“You can go out now. I already saw you there.” He declared. I walked out and exposed myself.

“Chad.” I started.

“You shouldn’t be here. You shouldn’t be talking to a worthless guy like me.” He said each word with a smirk. He’s definitely mocking me.

“Look. I didn’t mean to say those things. I just want to divert the topic away from you.”

“Look. You shouldn’t explain anything to me. We’re not even friends and you didn’t even hurt me.” He said knowingly.

“Yeah right.” I rolled my eyes at this. “But I bet you think that I’m a heartless selfish witch.” I complained.

“That will never change.” He responded.

As I was about dashed to his direction to protest, I tripped and landed on a hard surface.

“Ouch.” I heard Chad groaned. As I glanced up, I realized that the hard surface is no other than Chad’s chest. He caught me when I was about to hit the ground?

I now looked at his face, his eyes were closed, glasses off, and the moment he opened them, there I saw his enticing eyes. For a second there, I was lost in his rich blue eyes.

“Are you alright?” He worriedly asked.

I can’t utter a word. I was stunned. That’s the moment I felt my heart beating irregularly.

What the hell was that!

I don’t know what happened but the next thing I noticed was I’m already sitting at the ground. He’s examining my knees for any bruises or fracture.

“Hey Collins, are you alright? Are you hurt?” He kept on asking me questions but I was still left dumbstruck.

“Hey.” He snapped his finger and that’s the time I finally found my voice.

I immediately stood up and distanced myself away from him. “Yes, I’m fine.”

“You’re so clumsy, you know that?” He laughed. I looked at him again and his eyes never leaving mine. I immediately looked away, this stupid heart is pumping so hard and suddenly I felt nervous about it.

“I-I have to go.” I started to walk away but then I kinda lost my balance. There he is again, caught me right on time. He held my right elbow and snaked his other hand to my waist.

“You think I’m going to watch you limp your way towards the school?”

“No. I’m perfectly fine.” I tried to convince him.

“Nonsense. I know a way so that no one will see you hanging out with me.” Before I could protest, he already swept me of my feet and carried me with his arms.

That’s not the issue here Chad, it’s not the fact that I’ll be seen hanging out with you. It’s the fact that you might hear the loud thumping of my heart! I don’t even understand why I’m feeling nervous about it! I even felt the warmth on my cheeks!

I can’t help but stole glances at his eyes, especially now that the glasses were out. His eyes were beautiful. Why does he have to hide it in those silly glasses? Didn’t he even consider wearing contact lens

I was silent the whole time. I was afraid that I might stutter in front of him. When we arrived at the back entrance of the school building, he put me down and said, “Be careful not to fall on me again, Collins.” He bids his goodbye with a smirk.

He left me speechless, again. I hate it when he does that. Why is it that he always has to say the last words!

This is bad. I can’t do this alone. I need back-ups.

I let out my phone and sent a message to my friends.

‘Emergency meeting at my house, now! - Courtney’
