Chapter 6 – The Ultimate Prank

** COURTNEY’s POV **

It’s been a week since my unfortunate trip to Mr. Cleveland’s office. And since then, I haven’t heard anything from the proud geek! After that threat came out of my mouth, he should be running to me now and beg for my forgiveness. What’s taking him so long!

I’m getting impatient as days passed by. I need him this instance, especially now that I barely pass my pop quizzes. And my Dad is being true to his words on giving me a curfew. A curfew of ten in the evening? The party doesn’t even start at ten!

I’m totally pissed off!

I can’t continue to live like this. I need my life back. This is not how I wanted to spend my senior life and I definitely don’t want to repeat a year!

Curse you big time Chad Treyson! I hope you’re suffering right now!

"Hey! Cut it out, Court! Have mercy on your yogurt. Geez!" Terry grabbed my hand and reprimanded me. It made me back to reality to realize that I’m in the cafeteria with the girls, eating lunch.

I looked at my food and saw that the yogurt was all messed up, there were spills at my hand and I didn’t even notice it up until now. I stopped whatever I was doing, dropped my spoon and wiped my hands.

I didn’t even bother to give any attention to Terry or the others. All I did was to look around as if I was expecting someone to come.

"What's wrong Court? Are you alright? Expecting someone?" asked Lucy, looking at every direction I was looking.

I turned my attention to them. The girls we’re looking at me skeptically. I’m debating with myself whether I’m going to tell them about the things that happened to me but then I decided not to. It’ll be more complicated if there were too much people involved in this plan.

"Nothing.” I simply replied. “Just continue talking and eat your food. I'm fine" I assured them and dismissed the topic right away.

I continued to look around and the girls didn’t bother to ask me any more questions. They just resumed their gossip and ate their lunch. Not long enough, I finally spotted him.

It’s about time!

“I’ll be right back.” I bid my goodbye to the girls and I immediately stood up to avoid their upcoming queries.

I walked towards his direction. I dragged him out of the cafeteria, away from the sight of my friends.

"Finally! What took you so long? This better be good. So, did he finally give up?" I eagerly asked, hoping to hear the good news.

He scratched his head and answered hesitantly. "Well about that, sorry Courtney, that guy is... is... is... nothing." He looked down, averting his eyes. It’s as if he’s ashamed of delivering this kind of news to me.

He should be really ashamed!

"What do you mean nothing? Jeez Max, he's a geek! And you're known for being the Geek Terminator here in school, everyone’s afraid of you!” I punched his arms in annoyance. “Did he beat you up?" I continued with an angry tone.

What’s wrong with this guy! Did he chicken out?

A week ago, I threatened Chad Treyson. I told him that I would make his life a living hell. And I knew in that moment that Max was the right person for the job. He accepted it because aside from being popular; I'm also the girlfriend of their quarterback, Troy. It's so nice to be popular and have connections.

Max is a member of the football team, their best line backer. He’s big and muscular. His brute strength was unbelievable like he was on steroids or something. He’s really that big and tall. So I don't see any reason why he’s giving me this nothing statement. He should have turned that geek to me in the first day!

This is really frustrating.

"It’s not what you think Court. The thing was… me and the guys… we’re really torturing that geek. We’ve done everything you could have imagined and despite all that, he just won’t break. We can’t get any reaction from him. No crying, begging, or even screaming! It’s like playing a doll and dudes don’t play dolls, Court! He doesn’t give a damn to anything we do to him. He thinks he’s some badass or some kind of a superhero in movies. You know, we even bathe him in shit! You should’ve seen it Court, it was brutal!"

With his confession, my brows started to crease in pure disbelief. I didn’t answer because I’m not really sure of what to say.

No reaction? Was that even possible? That geek thinks he’s some kind of a superhero? This is not a fictional movie. This is the real thing! And I’m not buying that act of being tough and almighty.

Maybe the steroids were getting to Max’s head. Or maybe he’s losing his touch. He’s not that geek terminator anymore. His built was no longer fitted for that title. Yeah he appears terrifying on the outside but then maybe he’s really soft on the inside.

This is totally pointless and pathetic. But then, what if?

With that question suddenly popped in my head, something hit me. The vision of what happened five days ago in front of the faculty unexpectedly came to me.

“Go ahead. You're talking about hell? I've been to hell, Collins! I've experienced it and I know what it’s like.”

Is that what he meant when he told me that he’s been to hell? Geez, he must think he’s so cool and rough. At that moment, his words came out as a challenge and threat at the same time. What does he mean by that? I wonder what kind of hell he’s been talking about.

But whatever that was, he still can’t be this tough.

"Lay off the steroids Max, it’s getting to your head. Now tell me everything you did to him from day one up until now, and I mean everything!"

** CHAD’s POV **

Five days have passed and the pranks still went on. I guess Courtney Collins was being true to her words about making my life a living hell. She even asked Max Cowel from the football team to do the deeds.

Talk about total desperation.

What’s her problem? Instead of wasting her time thinking these stupid games, she should have focus her brain cells to the more important thing, her education. Seriously, does bullying make her life exciting? I don’t understand how mean people get satisfaction over other people’s misery. That’s totally barbaric!

And she expects me to like her? That’s what I call insanity. She’s so full of herself. Well I bet she’s thinking that she’ll win this game. Well, I highly doubt that. I hope she recalls the things I said to her. I’m neither afraid nor bothered by these pranks. These are basic and child’s play. Not well though of, so cliché. Can’t even compare to the things that happened to me back then.

I headed to my locker and grabbed my things for the next class. By that, I can sense that something’s wrong. I can see that everyone was looking at my direction. They’re whispering to each other and laughing.

Nice, so I’m popular now huh.

All the students were trying to keep their distance away from me. I guess they don’t want to be punished for associating with the Queen’s enemy. I don’t even know if they have any idea that their so-called role model declared this war and the reason for this oppression.

With that, I don’t have a choice but to cancel our club meeting because I don’t want my members to be involved in this fiasco. I’m also purposely avoiding Jackson, telling him I’m busy for being a Student Assistant. I don’t want him to suffer the same thing. He’s not really used to this bullying.

It started on a Monday morning. It was the first day. Several guys from the football team pushed me hard whenever they pass me through the hall. And it lasted for one whole day. It wasn’t what I’d expected. I’m thinking of more creative type, not that lame one. People around me were wondering what was that all about. It appears that they’re all shock that there’s a new target of this sick game. But I was not. I’m really expecting that it was bound to happen. I perfectly knew that the Queen has already sent her soldiers to do the battle for her.

Tuesday was old school. The all time favorite of all teen-bullying movies, the swirly. The moment that they dragged me inside the men’s room, I perfectly know what that prank was all about. The funny thing was, they don’t have the guts to do it. They’re even arguing which one of them will do the honor of clutching my head and shove it into the toilet bowl. Because we didn’t have much time and we were definitely going to be late for next period, I volunteered to do it myself. I’ll never forget the perplexed expression they had on their faces.

Third day, Wednesday, they stuck me up inside a public toilet with full of shit and then they turned it down. That’s one disgusting public toilet I may say. I can’t forget the unpleasant odor that lingers to me despite of hours I stayed in the shower cleaning myself. Even at home, I still smelled like shit. My sister, Cindy, can’t eat her food properly because of the remnants of that disgusting scent. She’s even making that as an excuse to avoid eating her brussel sprouts.

The bullying doesn’t stop there, Thursday, the most stupid, lamest, and dumbest idea in the history of bullying happened. They locked me up inside the janitor’s closet for a whole day. What a bunch of grade schoolers! I didn’t cry or even screamed for help. All I did was to plug my earphones and listened to my Ipod. I found it very relaxing. I didn’t have any idea how long it lasted, all I know was it was already dark when the janitor heard me singing and unlocked the door.

I’m starting to get irritated by this. Not because of these pranks but because of the things that I’ve missed. I’ve been absent to my classes and to my duty as a Student Assistant. Good thing my teachers and the faculty staff bought my excuse of being sick. I don’t know if they have any idea of what’s happening to me these past few days. But one thing I know is that I’m not going to tell them these. They’ll just make a big deal out of it and besides; bullying is so normal in high school.

And now is Friday, the fifth day, it was already lunchtime and there’s still no sign of Max and the others. Did they just give up already? I highly doubt about that.

I closed my locker after I grabbed all the things I need. I looked around and they’re still whispering and laughing. Is this some kind of another prank? People will look at me, whisper and laugh while I walk down the hall? That’s totally ridiculous. Can’t they think of any other plan than this?

I continued to walk and ignored the people in the hall. But then something caught my eyes that made me stopped and wondered.

The reason for this nuisance, Courtney Collins, was standing at the other end of the hall. She’s looking at me with her brows wrinkled. She looked kind of disturbed. Max was standing behind her and grinning like an idiot.

I turned my eyes back to Collins, I saw her took a deep breath and mouthed a word that looks like out.

Now it was my turn to get confused. What was that all about?

** COURTNEY’s POV **

“What the hell was that all about, Max! That’s it? And they call you the great geek terminator, for what? That’s a bunch of crappy ideas! What are you, ten?” I groaned in dismay. The moment Max finished his narration about the things he did to that geek, I perfectly understand why Chad hadn’t come to me in an instant. The pranks were senseless!

“It was the only thing we’re allowed to do. If we’ve taken it to the next level and beat him up, the principal might know and he might suspend the team. We can’t jeopardize the squad. We’re applying for college scholarship and this is our last year.”

Yeah, for a small brain like that, you’d really need that scholarship. I said in my thought.

“But we’re not giving up.” Max said, trying to regain his confidence. “That geek has to pay. No one is strong enough to stand that kind of bullying. We’ll never stop until he cracked.”  He looked around, leaned closer to me and whispered something. “We have something new. You’ll like this one. We’ve watched this last night and thought that it will be perfect! It’s the Ultimate Prank. It has something to do with slushies and total humiliation.”

Oh. I don’t like the sound of that plan. The moment I heard the word, total humiliation, it was like I felt my heart stopped.

Wait a minute, am I concerned for that geek? I should not! He’s the reason for my suffering. If he’d been very cooperative from the start, none of this will happen.

‘But it’s totally unfair for him to be dragged in this situation. You’re at fault that your grades are failing. No need to play the blaming game.’

As my conscience spoke up, it made me think twice. Somehow, I wanted to warn Chad about this plan. This is getting too far.

“What time is it? I-I mean what time will you do the Ultimate Prank?” I noticed a little bit of shakiness in my voice while asking this question.

Max looked at his watch and grinned impishly.  “Any minute now. Turn around.”

He grabbed my shoulders and turned my body towards the direction he was pointing at a while ago.

There I saw Chad walking in the hallway looking sloppier than before. Messy hair, big goofy eyeglasses, that backpack swinging on one side of his shoulders, black t-shirt with jacket and straight cut pants. I was about to walk towards him but Max’s still holding my shoulders in place.

“Look carefully, this is gonna be fun!” He whispered cheerfully.

A lot of students watched Chad walking in the hallway, they were all whispering and laughing silently as if they all know what the prank was all about. I can’t help but have second thoughts about this. I’m perfectly aware that I’m not doing the right thing. With that, I’ve decided that I have to end this. I could think of other ways to get what I want but not this one. There’s no way I’d let Chad be humiliated in front of all these people, not while I’m watching.

I saw Chad stopped walking and locked eyes with me. I was breathing heavily, unsure of what to do. All I want was for Chad to get out of here, fast. “Out.” I mimed. He just frowned his brows in confusion.

I was about to come close but it was too late. The slushy plan had already started. Two slushies, three, four, Oh My! Where are these slushies coming from? It keeps on coming and coming as if it’s raining slushies!

“No freakin’ way!” I said softly. Disbelief was evident in my tone.

I heard everyone laughed and that made me really angry. I couldn’t help but raised my right hand and shouted, “Stop!” Everyone looked at me and stopped, silence followed afterwards.

I walked towards Chad’s direction and noticed he was shivering. He wiped off the slushies away from his body and took off his glasses. At that moment it was the first time I saw his eyes, his deep blue eyes. It doesn’t show any emotions, no sadness, fear or even anger, just plain cold deep blue eyes. The moment I saw it, I felt that my heart just sunk. It made me realize how cruel and mean I was.

I stepped closer but he stepped back, he took side-glances and he finally faced me, our eyes met. He exhaled heavily. He opened his mouth and said something that only I could hear.

“Congratulations. This was something new, very clever. You know, you could use your cleverness to focus on your studies and not to pester anyone just to do your deeds. If you think this prank can change my mind, think again it’s still not enough, not enough for me to give up. Better luck next time, Collins.” He let that out venomously.

Before I could utter a word, he already turned around and walked away.

My heart was feeling heavy. I’m starting to feel uneasy.

Maybe this is what guilt and regret was all about. And it was the time I felt it.

This was definitely the first.
