CHAPTER 5 – The Queen VS The Geek.

** COURTNEY’s POV **

I can’t believe this is happening to me.

My Dad is totally over reacting. How can he do such thing? Is this his way of being a father to me? Well, it’s definitely not working. It’s just getting from worse to worst. After ditching me again on Christmas holidays, this is what he’s going to repay me?

Come on!

I’m getting all flustered and frustrated.

I have to end this soon. This should not be on the list of My Superb Senior Year. The sooner I talked to that errand boy, the sooner this problem will be solved.

This is it. The faculty room.

And where could that errand boy be?

What was his name again? I totally forgot. I’m not really good with names, especially if they’re not even in my circle.

I think I might be forgetting something here. Wait, I just broke that boy’s heart last year. What if he refused to give me the copy of exam papers? Should I flirt with him, offer to be his girlfriend again?

Nah, Courtney Collins will never do the same thing twice. I’ll just act friendly again and ask nicely. If he declined, which I highly doubt ‘coz let’s face it, no one says no to Courtney Collins. But if he dared to, threatening him will solve everything. No one wants to be on my bad side because if they do, they’ll taste the worst of the worst.

I’m so mean. I know, right?

When I was about to knock, the door of the faculty room opened. A boy came out. Surprised expression was written all over his face. He looked stunned or something. But I couldn’t care less; I have a mission to make.

I cleared my throat and asked him a question. “Excuse me, where’s the errand boy?”

“Errand boy?” He frowned.

“Yeah, I just said that. Are you deaf or something? You want me to say it out loud?”

“There is no such person named, errand boy, here.” He cleared out. I can sense some irritation in his voice.

“Oh really? How about the person who do stuff for the teachers and…”

“You mean Student Assistant.” He corrected me before I even finished my sentence.

“Yeah whatever you call that. Where is he?” I asked impatiently. This guy thinks he’s too smart just because he’s wearing glasses.

“I am the errand boy.” Is this guy playing with me? He is so not that errand boy.

“No. You’re not the person I’m looking for. He’s smaller and thinner with…”

“You mean last year’s SA, Jeremy?”

“Yeah that one, Jerry. Where is he?” I said in excitement.

"Jeremy no longer works here, Collins. He already transferred to another school”

"Oh is that so? Wait, how did you know my name? Oh I totally forgot, everyone knows my name.” I laughed. Well it’s really nice to be well known. “By the way who are you? Have we met somewhere?” I asked in a friendly tone. Since he’s the new errand boy, or should I say Student Assistant, I should be nice to him.

"Chad Treyson." Why is it that his name sounds familiar? It’s like I heard of it before.

"Chad Treyson, right! So you're the new erra—I mean, Student Assistant?" I clarified. This is going to be easy. Here I am thinking that I’ll be encountering that Jerry again. Luckily, he’s been replaced by this geek. He knows me and he appears like he can be easily manipulated.

"Yes." He simply replied. I looked at him closely and wondered where did I see him. His face looks familiar. And then it clicked; he’s the president of the drama club!

“Oh, you’re the Drama Rep? The one in the assembly?” I eagerly asked. "Cool! How was your club? Did you get a lot of members?"

My tone is full of enthusiasm. It’s not like I’m interested in this topic, I’m just finding some excuse to be in this geek’s good side.

"Actually..." He started. I didn’t let him continue because I definitely know what happened.

"Oh let me guess! You gained a lot of members, right?” I smirked. “No need to thank me! You see, I was right. You should’ve said something about your story. I bet it attracted a lot of members and---"

I didn’t have the chance to finish my sentence because he already cuts off my speech.

"Actually I didn't have any new recruits. Worst part was, the number of members in my club has lessened. From fifteen we only have seven. Thanks to your stupid question, half of my members quit. I don’t have enough people to participate in the play. And yeah, you’re right. No need to thank you, Courtney Collins! I’m struggling right now because of you and your stupid question!”

Did he just yell at me!

This pathetic, four-eyed, old-fashioned geek shouted at The Courtney Collins!

He actually did!

No one as in no one ever dared to yell at me like that! No one!

Okay, Courtney, calm down. Remember he’s the new errand boy. Act friendly. Compose yourself. He’s your only hope. He’s holding the key to your senior diploma.

I took a deep breath and replied. “Wait. First of all, my question wasn’t stupid. If you thought about it, I really do have a point. You should have discussed your story to everyone so that they’ll have an idea on what it was all about. I don’t see any reason there to classify my question as being stupid. Don’t blame me and my curiosity.”

“Oh yeah? And your curiosity involves something like humiliating me? Calling me loser in front of everyone?”

“What are you talking about?” Now he’s starting to talk non-sense things.

“Good luck finding a member, loser.” He said, trying to imitate my voice. I don’t get him? I frowned my brows in confusion. I was about to ask him what was he talking about but the incident of what happened in assembly came rushing into me.

Stupid misunderstanding.

“Now I get where this animosity is coming from. I can assure you that that thing didn’t come out of my mouth. It was Terry, my friend. Get your facts straight, Treyson. So don’t blame me if you didn’t gain a single member. Maybe your club is just boring or you’re not an effective leader.” I raised my brow at him and waited for him to answer.

"Whatever Collins, I'm outta here." He turned around and he started to walk away.

What? Whatever is not even acceptable in my vocabulary. This geek is starting to get in my nerves!

"Hey!” I called him out but he just continued to walk away. I run towards his direction and stopped him. “I said, wait!"

"What!"

"What do you mean what? Aren't you going to apologize?"

"Apologize for what?" I’m starting to lose patience. Any minute now, the real Courtney will emerge. This geek is making the worst out of me.

"Apologize for blaming me to the things that I didn't do?" He better apologize or else…

I saw him groaned and looked at me, straight into my eyes. "If you hadn’t asked that stupid question in the first place, things wouldn’t have turned out like this. The club might not have any new members but we could’ve at least retained the old ones. But they’re gone! Not enough actors means disaster school play! Happy? So shouldn't you be the one apologizing to me?"

Is this guy for real? Raising his voice on me? He even dared to ask for my apology! Who does he think he is?

"I have nothing to apologize for! I didn't do anything wrong. I was right, okay!" I insisted and tried to enlighten him. It’s time to show him who’s the queen here.

"Fine. If you don't want to apologize, neither do I. Case closed! Goodbye, Collins."

The nerve of this geek! I hate his guts! Where did he even get those? Does he know what I’m capable of doing? His arrogance is draining the patience I have.

And he’s leaving, again! I should do something before it gets worse.

** CHAD’s POV **

"Fine. If you don't want to apologize, neither do I. Case closed! Goodbye, Collins."

I turned and leave.

I’m aware that the things that I said to her were a little harsh. I shouted at her. I shouted at a girl. I know I hate everything about her, especially her guts but I can’t deny the fact that she actually had a point. Maybe the reason why I didn’t want to apologize is that I don’t want my pride to be step on by the likes of her.

And hey, I also have a point. I’m not going to be the first one to apologize no matter what. I don’t want to give her the idea that she has power over me.

I want her to realize that she can’t control everybody.

After I walked few steps away from her, I immediately felt her hand grabbing mine. Is she trying to stop me?

"Ok fine. I'm sorry. I'm sorry if my curiosity cost half the members of your club. I'm sorry if my friend humiliated you. I'm sorry."

I stayed rooted from where I was standing. I was stunned. Am I hearing it correctly? Courtney Collins? The Courtney Collins, apologizing? Is she some kind of possessed or something?

I turned around to make sure that the person who was talking is Courtney herself. And it’s definitely, without a doubt, in fact, her. She’s pouting her lips and she’s looking somewhere just to avoid my eyes. I tried my best not to laugh. She looks funny I can’t help but smile.

I took a deep breath and said, "Ok I'm sorry too. I'm sorry for blaming you. For judging you and jumping into conclusion. I'm sorry for saying that your question was stupid. I hate to admit it but… you really had a point." After I said my apology, she looked at my direction and she actually gave me a smile, a genuine one.

Wow. She looks different when she does that.

Okay Chad, you’re starting to sound like an idiot.

"So we're ok?" She asked.

"Yes, we're ok" I assured her. Well, I think I judge her too soon. She’s actually nice.

"Since we’re, you know, okay, can I ask you a favor?"

"What is it?"

"Well… just keep this conversation between you and me. How will I say this?” She started. She bit her lower lip and continued. “You see, Mr. Cleveland talked to me and said something about the possibility of not graduating. My Dad knew about this and I’m totally screwed. He gave me a curfew and took away my credit cards so that I can focus on my studies. He doesn't want Cs, Ds or Fs and stuff and---"

She’s talking too fast but I do have an idea on where this conversation is leading. I cut her off and asked. "And you want me to tutor you?"

She looked at me as if I grew a second head and then she laughed. "No, silly. What non-sense are you talking about? I just want to have a copy of the test papers before the exam. And since you’re the erra--- Student Assistant, you have access --- "

And now it’s my turn to look at her cynically. “Woah! Stop right there. You want me to do what?”

"To steal the test papers before the exam.” She rolled her eyes as she replied to my question. “Wait, I thought we’re cool?"

Un-freakin-believable!

"So that's the reason you apologized? The reason for we're cool is to steal the exam papers for you? Are you out of your mind!" I asked in pure disbelief.

"Hey! That's the only solution I could think of! I really want to graduate, Chad! What will you do if you were in my shoes, huh? I know you'd do the same!" She accused.

I clicked my tongue in irritation. What’s with this girl? "What would I do? I would definitely study! Oh and hey, I’ll stop goofing around!"

"Easy for you to say geek! You don’t even have a social life to begin with and studying is your only pass time. Of course you wouldn’t understand. And I’m not goofing around!”

She still has the audacity to defend herself?

“Ok, Chad Treyson, what do you want? What do you want me to do so that I can have those papers, huh?"

"Nothing, Courtney Collins! Nothing!"

She’s really out of her mind! Just a while ago, I even thought that she was cute and funny but now, I take everything back. She's a good actress. She should be in the drama club.

Certified Drama Queen!

"You want me to be your girlfriend? Fine! I'll be your girlfriend just promise me to hand me the test papers before the exam and I’ll be your girlfriend, Chad Treyson" She proposed with a smile. This smile is now creeping me out.

"No Courtney Collins. I don't like you to be my girlfriend. I'm not attracted to girls like you!"

She let out an imprudent laugh. “What are you talking about? Every guy would be begging me to be his girlfriend. And you’re saying that you don’t want me? And worse, you’re not attracted to me? That’s foolish. Wait, don’t tell me… you’re gay!” She accused.

This girl has some serious issue. She’s one of the hopeless cases. Talk about being narcissistic.

I laughed at her pitiful attempt in reversing the situation. I’m pretty sure she’s just trying to get through me and lower my self-esteem, even if it’s not true, so that she can have something extreme to use against me.

Too bad I’m not one of the toys that can be caught up in your cold crane, Courtney.

"Look, Collins. Not liking you doesn’t mean I'm gay or something. I'm just not attracted to girls who don’t have any self-respect for themselves. They offer their relationship to someone in exchange for what? Some deeds like stealing exams papers? You expect me to like someone like you? Think again Collins. Wake up! There are things that you can’t have in this world. It doesn’t revolve around you!”

After I said those words, the real Courtney Collins showed up. The girl who’s acting kind and pleasant a while ago turned into something dangerous and distressing.

"Wrong move Chad Treyson, wrong move!” She glared at me menacingly. She walked closer to my direction and continued with her threatening words in a slow pace. “If you don't like me fine! I don't like you either. It's your loss not mine. I was trying to be nice to you but I didn't expect you to be like this. So here's the last draw. Give me those test papers or else I will make your high school life like a living hell.”

Now she’s being aggressive. I closed the distance and towered her. I replied with the same attitude as hers, arrogant and intimidating, but mine is with a little challenge.

"Go ahead. You're talking about hell? I've been to hell, Collins! I've experienced it and I know what it’s like. And by the way, I'm taking back my apology and the we’re cool part. My first impression about you was actually right, just a while ago I thought you were different. Guess I'll just stick to my first judgment. Goodbye Courtney Collins!"

I turned back and walked away from her. She just continued to yell and scream at me.

"You're such a bigheaded geek you loser! I also take back my apology you idiot! I’m going to make sure---"

I continued to walk away until I couldn't hear her anymore.

I guess from now on, my life will not be as peaceful as before.

I should prepare myself to this unexpected battle.
