Popularity. One word that for some means everything but in reality, it just makes everything even more toxic. Try to fit in, have everyone know about you, all that bullshit. I guess that's what annoys me the most. You're being anyone other than yourself just to make yourself seem superior to others. You try to do something out of character to be noticed.  In fact, there are times wherein you ditch the truest friends just to be with the popular kids.

I know, it sounds like something out of a movie but believe me, it's pretty accurate. It just happens that the ones in the films are over-exaggerated. And as obvious as it is, I'm not one of them, thank God, but I'm not one of the losers either. I'm somewhere in the middle, a place where their victims wish they could be in.

I'm not a fan of popularity, I guess I've already made that clear. The reason behind that, my friends decided to ditch me to become one of those stereotypical bitchy cheerleaders. They left me once I said that I was no way in hell joining the team. They weren't even the first ones to do so.

"Earth to y/n." Alex said, bringing me back to reality as I stared off into my locker, snapping his fingers in front of my eyes.

"Uh, yeah? Sorry. Lost in thought." I said sheepishly.

"I really think we should get you checked out. You keep staring off as if you've seen a ghost."

"Oh shut up, dumb ass. I just couldn't sleep as much last night."

"Why? Did you watch Sultan Sketches' video about sleep paralysis again? The last time you did, you weren't able to sleep for three straight days."

"No. I learned my lesson. A certain neighbor was watching some stupid horror film. I couldn't sleep with all of the screaming coming from the actors. I don't know how the hell it was possible to hear it from my room but it was... it was kind of terrifying."

"Oh honey, I feel so bad for you." He said, chuckling as he threw his arm around me.

"I can really feel your sympathy, Alex." I groaned, grabbing my stuff from the locker and slamming it shut, shrugging him off of me.

He just chuckled as I rolled my eyes and started walking to my first class. Him being in the same class, followed me and even had the audacity to place him arm around me once again only to be pushed off. The day went on slow. The lectures were pretty much pointless, my classmates were even much bigger idiots than I though, and everyone was making such a big deal about prom. Just another typical day in a high school meant for teen fiction stories. Once it ended, I couldn't help but rejoice, grabbing onto Alex's hand and practically dragging him out of the room.

"I think we should make a cover some time this week." He said, placing his things into his locker as I leaned against the ones beside his. "It's been too long since I made one and I think it's time you sing with me."

"Alex... I would love to but you know that I haven't sung since..." I couldn't help but trail off as a familiar figure passed by me.

"Since you and Shawn stopped talking, I know."

"Sorry. It's just that I lost interest in singing after that. It just... I don't know, doesn't feel right when the only reason why you started to do so decided to turn his back on you."

"I get it but just know that my offer will always be open."

"Thanks."

"What the fuck?!" I heard Shawn yell from the other side of the hall.

I couldn't help but push myself off the lockers and walk towards the commotion, just like everyone else. I felt sad for him once I processed the situation in front of me. His whore of a girlfriend had her arms around one of his best friends, lipstick smudged and transferred on his face. I looked back to my former best friend to see him fighting back his tears.

"Shawn, I can explain." The whore said, pushing Cam away and walking slowly towards Shawn.

"Explain what? There's nothing here to talk about. We're done." He said, raising his hands in surrender and backing away from the scene, running past the stares of everyone.

"Shawn!"

I merely backed away as well, the crowd dispersing due to lack of interest. It's one of those anti-climatic moments that just disappoint you if you're into the drama. Couldn't blame them. I was rooting for a wrestling match or something since I think Cam deserved it. After all, he was the reason why we stopped talking. He practically dragged Shawn into the whole popularity thing and for what? Because he's hot and can sing?

I shook my head as I watched her desperately run towards his car but he left as soon as he could. I went up the bus, Alex already saving a space for me which I was grateful for. I plugged my earphones in and put them on, letting the beat of the music calm me down. Once we reached my house, I went down and looked over at his window to see if he was there by any chance. I was about to head in when I heard strumming followed by swearing and the clanging of guitar strings as the instrument was probably thrown on the ground. I walked over to the door leading to his backyard and knocked before I opened it.

"Hey." I greeted, leaning against the fence as he picked up his guitar from the grass, wiping his face with the sleeves of his jacket.

"Oh, uh, hey." He muttered, desperately trying to make it seem as if he wasn't crying.

"You okay?"

"Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?"

"Well, for one, your snot's dripping down your nose and your eyes are red and puffy. Here."

I walked over to him and dug into my purse for a tissue. I sat on the table beside the lounge chair, placing a hand on his knee as he blew his nose. He gave me a sad smile and looked down onto the ground.

"Shawn, talk to me."

"You saw what happened, I know you did or else you wouldn't have come."

I sighed and transferred onto the small space that was left on the chair so that it would be easier to talk to him. "Well... you wanna talk about it?"

"I just want to forget everything that happened, honestly." He muttered, laying his head on my shoulder.

"Forget the whole cheating thing and remain oblivious to it or...?"

"Forget high school ever happened."

"You don't mean that. Today may suck but you've had a pretty good past years."

"Actually, I do mean it. If we never stepped foot in that dumb ass building and never met those people, we might still be friends. Everything went downhill when I left you for them."

"Shawn... I'm still your friend. Sure we don't hang out or talk to each other much nowadays but I never stopped being there for you."

He shook his head and sat straight up, wringing his hands. I just sighed and placed my arm around his shoulder as a feeble way of comforting him. From the years that I've known him, this simple action is enough to calm him down but considering the situation at hand, I don't know if it's working.

"What if we got back at them?" He muttered, turning his head to face me.

"Shawn, sweetie, this isn't  F the Prom." I said, laughing as he rolled his eyes at me.

"I mean do something to prove that I didn't care about the whole cheating thing."

"By getting back at them, that's basically making it seem otherwise."

"Or at least something to prove that I didn't need them in the first place."

I couldn't help but chuckle at his suggestions.

"You'll help me, right y/n?"

"I would but it really depends on what you're planning to do."

"Fake date me just to show that I never loved her in the first place thus making the whole thing irrelevant."

"This isn't To All The Boys I've Loved Before either."

"Can you stop with the references? Damn, and here I thought you actually changed."

"You haven't changed either, Shawn. I mean, you're still as stupid as ever."

"HEY!"

"Kidding!" I said, laughing at his playful glare. "But really, isn't it better to just leave this alone?"

"That's basically giving them the crown."

"Like getting revenge isn't?"

"Come on, y/n, please."

I stood up and pulled him with me. He lazily stood up, his lower lip sticking out into a pout. I couldn't help but suck a breath in at the sight. I shook my head and brought a finger up to literally wipe his pout off. I then held onto his hand and led him out of his own backyard.

"If I agree to this then you definitely owe me." I said, turning to him and crossing my arms.

"Shopping it is then." He said, laughing as I smiled at him and taking his keys out.
