Peter hated to leave her, but he had to do one thing before he could be hers again. He ran back to the house. He and the twins were due at his apartment for a cookout in a few hours. His timing was awful, but he couldn't wait any longer.

He ran through the door and Marie said, "Long run. Was it nice?"

"Yes, thank you." He addressed the twins. "We need to get going."

"So soon I thought you had dinner plans. It's early."

"We have things to do."

"Well, take a shower at least before you go."

A shower was a good idea although he really hadn't run far, he was sweaty. "Okay, but I want you two ready to go."

He jumped in the shower and suddenly remembered the morning he found out about Evan. He had broken down in this same shower and had resolved to win Megan back.

He washed in two minutes and dressed in the clothes he wore earlier.

"Okay."

"That was fast." It disappointed Marie that they were leaving.

He took a deep breath. "Listen Marie. You know I love you and I owe you so much for all you've done, but I've been thinking. I've decided that when you want to see the twins, you need to ask Megan. I also think you should remember that you have three grandchildren."

"What?"

"I'm serious." Ed, who was busy watching golf, smirked so Peter winked at him.

Once in the car, he said, "We're going to go see Abbie before we go to the cookout."

They were quick to unbuckle and run in the house. He followed and smiled at Megan. The baby was asleep in the swing and she told them to be quiet.

"Go play in your room for a little while."

She smiled as they ran off together. She approached him and touched his damp hair.

"You showered."

"Yes, well, I ran back. I want you to know that on my way out the door, I told your mother that she needs to talk to you if she wants to see the twins. I will only be on your side. I should have cut her off a long time ago. I was wrong."

"No, it was good you let her see them, but there were times I was jealous of you... especially holidays."

"Like Thanksgiving?"

"Yes."

"I was hoping to sit with you while you ate, but you kicked me to the curb."

"I did a lot of things I'm not proud of."

"We both did. Listen, we're having a cookout with John. Will you come with us? I don't want to leave you, but they are really excited about going." He pointed to the twins' room.

"I guess... alright."

"I can't pretend things haven't changed." He may never stop smiling. "I can drive you home later or you and Abbie can..."

She interrupted. "Pete, she's not six weeks old yet."

It took him a minute to realize what she was saying. With the twins, she had received the okay to resume marital relations, but they both fell asleep that night. It took an afternoon a few days later when both babies were both fed and asleep before they did.

"It's okay." He meant it. "We can be together or you can come back here. No pressure."

She reached her hand up and touched his cheek. "It's all happening so fast."

He thought for a moment. "Take your car. You can stay or if not it's alright."

"I have to shower and she'll need to eat soon."

He smiled. "Come when you're ready."

He called the twins out of their room. "Mommy's coming to the party."

Nick looked at his mother. "You are?"

"Yes, Daddy invited me."

Sophie said, "You are friends now."

Megan answered looking over at him. "Yes."

"I should tell you it's our poker group so Dan and Kristi will be there."

"She told me she was going to a cookout, but omitted that it was yours. She'd find out, eventually."

"Will you finally tell her what happened?"

"I'm not proud of it."

"We made this mess together. There were too many should haves. We need to agree to put it behind us." He smiled. "I'll see you later."

He was floating. When they arrived Becka called them into John's apartment. She eyed him funny. "What are you smiling about?"

Before he could answer, Sophie spoke up. "Mommy's coming with Abbie."

He watched as Becka looked from Sophie to him. "Hey! Victoria, can you take our friends outside? I need to help Peter upstairs."

She practically pushed him up the stairs which was funny given that she was eight inches shorter than him.

"So spill it all!"

"We talked. We cleared the air. I told her I love her and always have."

"And?"

"And she felt guilty for a long time."

"Does she love you too?"

"She didn't say it, but I think so."

"I'm happy for you. I just never want you hurt again."

"No, we're older now. Please welcome her, don't make her feel weird."

"I won't. I've always loved her too you know." She hugged him.

Together they brought the food down. The twins were running around, and Victoria was laughing. John walked over to him. "I heard you invited a special guest."

He just smiled and Becka turned to John. "He'll never stop smiling."

Their friends began arriving and as soon as he saw Kristi, he went right over to her.

"Can we talk a minute?"

"What's wrong?" she asked concerned.

"Nothing's wrong, but I need to tell you something."

"Peter, I think I already know."

How could she already know what happened just that afternoon? "Megan is coming. Don't ask a lot of questions, but we talked this afternoon, and we made up."

"Peter, you make up after a fight, not a divorce."

"Well, for us it was all the same. What was it you already knew?"

"I finally figured out that you love her. I knew there was something off with you two and then I realized that you still loved her and she must have divorce you. Though I never figured out why because you're too good of a guy to have done any of the things I've thought of."

"Can you accept that you'll never know? It took us over six years to discuss it. We don't plan on rehashing it."

"I will have to. Does she love you too?"

"Ask her, but not tonight. Tonight's going to be weird enough."

She texted him when she was on her way. He was waiting out front for her. It reminded him a little of that day they met his friends on the beach. Only today was with his adult friends, not the jerks from high school.

She slid out of the car, and he hugged her, and she hugged him back.

She looked beautiful. She always looked beautiful, but he could tell she made an extra effort. He whispered in her ear. "You're beautiful. You always have been and always will be. Don't forget it."

She smiled up at him. He wanted to kiss her, but knew if he started, he wouldn't be able to stop.

Finally she said, "I need the stroller."

He took it out of the trunk and set it up, commenting that it was much easier than the double one they had. She laughed. "One is easier."

She pushed the stroller as together they walked into the backyard.
