It was getting late, and the twins weren't home yet. They went to see her parents, but she would not get them. She was about to text Peter when headlights flashed through the room.

"Sorry, but your mother doesn't believe in bedtime on birthdays. They're tired. Let me help you get them to bed."

"Alright. I wanted to talk to you, anyway."

Peter told the twins to go get ready for bed and followed them into their room. Megan listened as he encouraged them to be quick if they wanted a story.

Megan supervised the tooth brushing and washing. She remembered when the twins were babies and they were a team. Damn hormones, she thought as she felt weepy.

She leaned against their door frame as Peter read a small story. This was something she had never seen him do before. After he kissed them, he stepped back and let Megan come in the room to kiss and tuck them in.

He followed her into the living room. Megan sat with some exertion.

Peter broke the silence. "You wanted to talk to me."

"Yes. Ooh." The baby moved, and she pushed on the spot as the baby pushed back.

She forgot Peter was there until he said, "It's active in there."

"Very."

"Can I?"

Part of her wanted to say no, but truthfully it was sad experiencing it alone. She held her breath as he sat next to her. Together they watched her belly move from the inside. Peter put his hand on the moving appendage. Megan wasn't prepared as her nerves betrayed her and reacted to his touch.

He was smiling. "I remember how the twins would go wild in there. It must be easier with just one."

"It is. Listen." His hand was still on her, and once or twice their hands accidentally touched. What was wrong with her she wanted to put her hand over his? It must be the pregnancy. It reminded her of how horny she was with the twin's pregnancy. She needed to suppress those feelings and focus. "Why did you tell them you were the daddy?"

"It just came out, but I meant it. From what I hear it's the general assumption."

"Who told you?"

"Becka mentioned it."

"She asked me, but I told her the truth. I haven't bothered to set others straight. It's hard to explain that he's gone."

"Do you miss him?" Peter's eyes pierced into hers.

"No. No." She confirmed her own answer.

"I just know if he were to come back, you wouldn't want to share this baby with him. I see how much you hate sharing the twins with me."

"I don't. I just miss them. I hate that they have a whole life that I'm not a part of. Just seeing them interact with you is foreign to me. I know that sounds crazy, because of when they were babies. Before."

"I know. Anyhow if you say I'm the father then it will be just yours."

"She, not it."

Peter smiled. "Really!"

"How did you know his name?"

"Whose?"

"Evan's. You said it the other day."

"Did I? Oh well, I met him at the bar last summer. I enjoyed talking to him. I knew he was seeing someone, but had no idea until I saw him leave that morning it was you. I never told him I knew you." He looked at her again.

She didn't know what to think. The idea that Evan and Peter were friends was so bizarre. They were the only two that she ever slept with. She thought about his offer. It was one thing to tell people, but it was another to list him on the birth certificate. She really didn't expect Evan to come back. She had heard nothing from him - not a call or even a text. Even if he did, he didn't want a child.

As if he was reading her mind, he asked, "Have you heard from him?"

"No. I never expected to. Can I think about your offer?"

"Yeah sure. Well, I should go. We both work tomorrow. Besides Kristi must be going crazy wondering why I'm still here. Someday you ought to just tell her and put her out of her misery." He stood to leave. "Goodnight. Hey Meg, thanks for letting me feel your baby girl."

When he left, she took a deep cleansing breath. She had so much to think about. His offer and the fact he knew Evan. Then what was that bit at the end about telling Kristi. She couldn't tell her. If she told her side of the story, she'd be lying. If she told the truth, then she would look like a fool. She should have faced the truth years ago, but then she would have to admit that she ruined her marriage.

She had come so far in the past year. She and Peter were talking. For two full years after the divorce, they could hardly even text. Her father picked the twins up and brought them back. Eventually after Peter moved to his apartment, her father said enough. Peter would stand on the porch and nod to her. Then Nick needed tubes in his ears and they had to talk.

First, they had to decide to go ahead with the procedure. Then they sat in the waiting room feeling powerless while their son was under general anesthesia. Peter was kind to her. Megan wasn't sure why because it was all her fault, and he was the victim. She knew he must hate her. She tucked away the guilt and moved on. They had just spent the afternoon in the same room and she let him touch her belly. They had definitely come a long way. She thought for a minute, we have even become friends again.

What is Megan feeling guilty about?
